Driving on Suspended from DUI
Posted by: Curious ()
Date: December 27, 2007 01:02PM

Does anyone know what will happen here? My buddy has a suspended license with like -15 points from a suspended license he received following a DUI arrest. It was suspended back in May. He still drives around on it, sometimes drunk. We've tried to get him to stop, but he won't, and are now thinking our only other option is to turn him in. Anyone know what would happen to him? Someone said jail time, but he didn't serve any last time, just had a 30-day sentence suspended. Thanks.

Dude, he'll get jail time. Turn him in. It'll be awsome. You can go visit him in jail. Super Cool of you. Way to go man.

He will have to do his 30 days and they will sentence him again for driving on a suspended. I would turn him in. Imagine how bad you would feel knowing he drives drunk, if he kills someone. Not cool.

Would he have to do his 30 days immediately, or after his court date? I don't want to screw him over, but you're right, I'd feel awful if he hurt himself or someone else.

It would be at his court date, they would take him into custody at the hearing. If they arrested him for driving on a suspended, he would probably spend a few days in jail and be released on bail. Which would probably be steep since he was probably released on his own recognizance when he was arrested for DUI (unless he had a prior record).

It sounds as though he wants to get into serious trouble. It could be an
attention getting device or perhaps he prefers "three slops and a flop" at
the local jail.

Turn him in. Just expect him to hate you for the rest of your life (no joke, but if you feel it is a moral obligation, you need to go with what you think is right).

He doesnt have to know it was you who turned him in. All you can do is call and give them his tag number when you know he is behind the wheel. If he is not intoxicated while driving on a suspended, he obviously wont get as much jail time as if he was intoxicated.

Don't turn him in for DUI. He'll really be screwed! Nobody will hire him and he'll probably end up in downward spiral that leads to a life crime.

Tell him the problem and take his keys. If your really a friend you would understand his situation and give a ride after he has been drinking.

I've known friends in this situation and all I have to say is "Do you want me to give you a ride?" They always say yes.

He probably has such a high tollerance that what you consider drunk and what he considers drunk are two completely different things. I've known some rednecks that could drink all day and they were perfectly fine becasue they had such a high tollerance level.

Oh and how is he passing his ASAP classes? Didn't the judge sentence him to ASAP classes and he gets a super sensitive BAL test? No way he could pass if he is drunk half the time? From what I hear ASAP can tell if the person has been drinking within four days of the ASAP class.

And yes, he'll do jail time for the second offense under probation. Certainly the 30 days that was a suspended sentence and probably more.

he clearly has an alcohol problem. since being an alcoholic isnt a crime, get him hooked on heroin and shove him into rehab. problem solved!

ok... but seriously, you need to do something before he hurts somebody or something expensive.

on a side note: why the hell is it that everybody drives on a suspended license?! not driving for a few months isnt impossible.

I wouldn't do a thing about it, just don't get involved or call his mommy and let her deal with it. If you get involved no matter what happens you will be somehow at fault. I know of a few geniuses that do the same thing and it's an individual adult decision whether to drink and drive or to catch a ride. If they wreck and die, great. If they wreck and hurt someone, I hope they live. If they wreck into another drunk, awesome!!!

IF you turn him into the police than you would be considered a major douche bag. Live with that...

A true friend would take him to an AA meeting, perhaps under the guise of something else. Yeah, lie to him.

Turning him in will not help him or you.

Governmentally involving someone in this situation will make life worse in the future. As I stated, a true friend would find some personal way to attack the problem.

OH MY FUCKING GOD< I GOT A GREAT IDEA FOR YOU. Go out to AutoZone and buy one of those gas tank caps with a LOCK. Next time his tank is running low he will try to stop and fill up only to realize that he won't be able to open the tank. You hold on or better yet throw away the key. That way you don't have to admit to it and the chances are he will have enough gas to get home and park the car. If he finds a way or takes it to a mechanic to get it removed(which is expensive) put another one on the next day a leave a note and sign as "your friend" or "guardian angel" whatever..... Those caps are only 5 bucks but it will defienetely keep him off the road or at least make it a pain in the ass for him to get those removed. It will cost him at least $100 to get it removed but it will defienetely be cheaper then getting busted for him

I would deal with it personally among friends and not bring the police into it.

If enough friends keep hassling him he'll get the message. Offering rides is also another great friend thing to do.

One of my old college buddies got popped for a DUI and was on restricted license. We had a get together two months ago and another friend of ours drove about 200 miles out of his way to pick the guy up so he didn't have to break his restricted license requirements.

Seriously, turning him in would not be cool. Life will suck for him and you'll feel bad. Like others have said, take him to AA or just take his keys away if you know hes drunk. If its really a problem get one of those ignition interlock systems that the court orders on repeat DUI offenders. Its like a breathalyzer and you have to blow into it before you start the car, and every once and a while while its going. Garunteed to keep a drunk off the road, because if they get someone else to blow into it first, and then they go off and are drunk and blow into it again, the car shuts off and notifies the police

Thats the dumbest thing I have ever heard. I cant believe you guys who are saying its not cool to turn him in, his life would suck after he gets in trouble, etc...imagine how bad his life would suck after he kills someone, or a family like the mother and 4 kids (one eight week old newborn) today in Ohio. Seriously if you know your friend drinks and gets behind the wheel, you need to put a stop to it. He could die tonight, and you would feel like shit tomorrow knowing you could have done something about it. It would eat at you for the rest of your life. He's a dumbass, you obviously arent because you know its a problem...so fix it however you see fit. I dont think going out and buying an ignition interlock on your own dime is going to solve it.
