WASHINGTON - There's been a sudden surge in the number of bank robberies in Arlington County and in Fairfax County, nearly 20 since June.

While police won't draw a direct correlation between the economy and the spike, some in the community are making the connection.

Bill Mueller, who's owned an eyeglass shop in Falls Church since 1993, says people need jobs.

"A lot of people are hurting. They need money. Banks have a lot of money, so here we go." Mueller says. "It's sad it's gotten to the point where people have to rob a bank to support their family."

Mueller watched while police investigated a bank robbery last week across the street from his business.

"The Assistant Manager says the guy walked in with a gun and said give me the money," Mueller says.

Arlington County Police Spokeswoman Crystal Nosal doesn't blame the increase in bank robberies entirely on the economy.

"We don't correlate these crimes with the economy. We look at the criminals themselves."

In Arlington, the same brazen criminal has hit four banks since June.

"We don't know his motivation, except that he wants money from the bank," Nosal says.

There have been seven bank robberies in Fairfax County since June.
Police have just made an arrest in two of them. They say the same woman robbed two different Apple Federal Credit Unions last month.

Mueller is worried that thieves will start targeting other businesses if the economy doesn't improve.

"It could happen to anyone," Mueller says.

Shootout requires more than one person with a gun, and with BB&T's being the most-commonly robbed in our area by a longshot it means their no-guns-for-customers policy keeps the guns solely on the robber's side.

Another BB&T robbed, this time in Fairfax Station. The robber implied a weapon, easy pickings in a bank that rejects legal implementation of the second amendment.

I thought having a gun in a BB&T was against their rules? How the hell did this happen?

Its almost as if outlawing guns only means the law abiding citizens wont have them. Either that or maybe he didnt see their no guns sign. Im sure if he saw that he would have rethought the whole thing

We've been over the topic of liability for BB&T and guns. No insurance company in their right mind is going to give liability insurance to a bank that allows guns. It's FAR, FAR cheaper to give the robber $5000 and let police catch him.

God forbid some gun nut starts capping off shots and kills some kids by accident while the robber gets away.

Worse a misfire that kills a bank customer or a kid by accident when there wasn't even a robbery. The lawsuit would be in the millions.

Thats not entirely true. Itd be one thing if the robberies werent so common. They do have a responsibility to keep their customers safe. Its only a matter of time before one of them gets killed during a robbery or more organized robbers start going after the real money in the back and just wait for those lawsuits. How about at least getting some armed security or something and not just keep letting the banks get robbed every 3 days.

But that wasnt the point. The point was its just an example to all the gun control extremists that want guns banned that criminals dont care if the guns are legal there or not. Theyre going to use them anyway

You are full of shit and a liar. Most banks DO allow lawful carry in their branches by not posting signs saying it is forbidden. BB&T and Wachovia are exceptions and I already ran and posted stats on what that has done for their robbery occurrences compared to other banks.

Does anyone even follow those no guns signs? Unless you're open carrying, it shouldn't even be an issue. The whole point of carrying concealed, is to keep it concealed and not let anyone know you are carrying. Do they frisk you at the door? Do you go through metal detectors? If not, who gives a shit. At Most, it's a tresspassing charge, and I have yet to hear of anyone who was not given a warning and asked to leave in this area. Aside from govt buildings and airports, where it's an actual crime, I carry everywhere I go, and have been since they changed the law in 97, and have yet to even remotely have a problem. You can say I'm breaking the law by going into an establishment that bans guns, but it's civil, not criminal, and, I probably broke at least 5 laws driving like everyone else in this area just to get there.
If you don't want to become a hardened criminal like the people knocking over banks and 7-11's by violating a civil trespassing sign, you can refrain from patrionizing those establishments. VCDL.org has a very good list of gun-unfriendly businesses, although it still needs updating - which is all done by volunteers, so get off your ass and pitch in if you give a damn about your rights.

How's my Hope and Change working out for everyone? How about this new Wealth Redistribution Plan of mine? The banks don't seem too enthusiastic, but I'm getting positive feedback from my core constituency.

Google it and do a search here of past thread that discussed the issue. My brother is a lawyer and has dealt with these type of cases. Having guns in an establishment is asking for million dollar lawsuits.

You can't carry a gun in the US Capitol and government buildings. That should tell you something.

Barry, you are right we are entitled to the money as Americans. Besides the banks have lots of money and probably a corporate jet so they deserve to be robbed.
BTW can I get another four years of unemployment checks?

What should that tell you? That has 0 to do with any other place. All it should tell you is that with how hated congress and the senate as a whole are of course you cant have guns near individual members. It has to do with assassination and they have their own police force for security.

Rather than look at Google, I'll look around at all the open banks that aren't BB&T and Wachovia, because those do allow lawful concealed carry in their banks. I don't care what some anon poster says his brother said. You are obviously wrong because the vast majority of banks in Virginia allow it and there they are...open.

How about you Google "Bank of America" and "Capital One" for starters and see if they have open branches in Virginia. When you see there are, you'll realize why your brother graduated in the lowest 5% of his class.

Doesn't surprise me at all why BANK ROBBERIES have increased this year. CRIME of this type no longer happens at night but, during the day in broad-day light.

DEFEND YOURSELFS. ARM YOURSELVES (if necessary). FIGHT OFF A ROBBER (if necessary) in order for yourself to survive, keep breathing and living.

DO AS NECESSARY TO KEEP YOURSELF ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!
