WASHINGTON - There's been a sudden surge in the number of bank robberies in Arlington County and in Fairfax County, nearly 20 since June.
While police won't draw a direct correlation between the economy and the spike, some in the community are making the connection.
Bill Mueller, who's owned an eyeglass shop in Falls Church since 1993, says people need jobs.
"A lot of people are hurting. They need money. Banks have a lot of money, so here we go." Mueller says. "It's sad it's gotten to the point where people have to rob a bank to support their family."
Mueller watched while police investigated a bank robbery last week across the street from his business.
"The Assistant Manager says the guy walked in with a gun and said give me the money," Mueller says.
Arlington County Police Spokeswoman Crystal Nosal doesn't blame the increase in bank robberies entirely on the economy.
"We don't correlate these crimes with the economy. We look at the criminals themselves."
In Arlington, the same brazen criminal has hit four banks since June.
"We don't know his motivation, except that he wants money from the bank," Nosal says.
There have been seven bank robberies in Fairfax County since June.
Police have just made an arrest in two of them. They say the same woman robbed two different Apple Federal Credit Unions last month.
Mueller is worried that thieves will start targeting other businesses if the economy doesn't improve.
"It could happen to anyone," Mueller says.
