On July 26, Dell polished off its new “solution center” in Herndon, a piece of the company’s $1 billion investment in solutions and services.

The center at Dulles Corner Lane provides a locale for customers to come see Dell’s new interactive technologies in action.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony and in a tour through the center, pausing many times to ask Dell attendants questions about the different displays.

“It was a nice little tour of some of the stuff Dell is doing — from law enforcement to health care to higher education,” McDonnell said. “The real hub of technology and innovation is in Northern Virginia, and it is great to add a [center like this] to the area.”

The Herndon location is the fifth such center that has officially opened and just the second in the United States. The other center is in Austin, Texas, where the company is headquartered. Dell has other centers open around the world, including one in Shanghai. According to Lee Morgan, a technology solutions executive at Dell, the company plans to have 12 total centers open by the end of this year.

“We are very excited to be in the Washington, D.C., area,” Morgan said. “This is the hands-on look; customers can come in and see just what we’re doing in the digital world.”

Dell chose the Herndon location in part due to its proximity to the federal government and the rich bounty of defense contractors and similar services out of the nation’s capital and the surrounding region.

But Jan Uhrich, the vice president of strategy and solutions for the company, said that the location functions as the sole center on the East Coast.

“We will be covering a wide range of customers, from Atlanta to Philadelphia, that want to see our technology,” Uhrich said.

Morgan added that a customer could fly in, take the five minute ride from Dulles Airport, and be at the location quite quickly.

Uhrich anticipates that the center will be quite a success in such a technology-driven region.

“You’ll see additional centers opening around the globe,” Uhrich said. “This is changing information technology.”

McDonnell seemed to be impressed with Dell’s tour of the facility and had nothing but praise for the company in his speech that followed.

“These technologies are the kind of things that improve the quality of life and the American dream,” McDonnell said. “Congratulations to Dell, and I expect to see the number of their employees grow drastically.”

Morgan thinks Dell is on the right track.

“This will grow. We’re changing the way we’re doing business, and we’re winning business because of it,” Morgan said. “This is it right here — practical solutions for next generation technology.”
