Traffic to OBX
Posted by: Fairfaxian ()

I know traffic to the outter banks sucks on Saturdays when most rentals start but does anyone know how bad it is on Fridays? Is it any better than Saturdays or should I leave at 4 am?

You can fly to Florida faster.

OBX is an awful drive. Friday is when the owners all leave so it is not better unless you leave at 2:00 am.

Good luck!

Friday isn't going to be much better. Take 95 to 295 to 460 (never traffic on 460). Stay away from 64.

That's the route I take, and I never have trouble leaving on a Saturday.

It isn't the OBX!
It's the Outer Banks.

The Outer Banks are great but the term OBX and all the people who use the term OBX and have their OBX and OBC (yes Outer Banks Connection sucks) stickers on their cars Suck.

Tell the locals down there it's OBX and see how they treat you then.

A number of the rentals are Friday to Friday, so if can work your vacation days you can miss a lot traffic both ways.

I've gone there for years and have an OBX sticker on the back of my car, so I guess I suck. If they hate that so much, then why are those stickers sold in every single shop down there?

And yeah, take 460 @ Petersburg on down. Nice/calm drive, barely any traffic at all.

Watch for the police on 460.
Leaving on a Friday is good, but get out of here in the morning. Like 10am. The rush starts on 95 here around 2pm on Fridays

Yup, that's usually the way I go.

Another way to avoid highway traffic is to get off 95 near Fredericksburg and take Rt. 17 down the middle peninsula to Yorktown. That's a nice drive and you're not gonna hit any traffic, although there are a bunch of lights as 17 approaches the interchange with 64.

Anyone who buys into that OBX marketing crap does suck. You obviously know nothing about the history of the OBX sticker. You just go to the "OBX" with your sticker on your SUV and drive around like your somebody. So many people have no idea what the Outer Banks are really about.

OBX, Ocean City, Dewey... wherever you go towards water, your best bet is to leave the house at 4am on Friday and/or Saturday... period. Plan on leaving the beach Sunday NLT than 6am or just stay till Monday. Follow those rules and you won't complain at all.

I find it comical that everyone from this area goes to OBX, OC, or Va Beach to "get away from the area" as though those are some sort of best kept secret. When in reality all the some ass hole you're trying to get away from are going to the same place. Have fun driving 4 hours to hang out with DC douche bags.

We normally leave Centreville for the OBX on a Friday morning to avoid the Saturday crush. As long as you're on the road before noon you should be OK. After that, you risk hitting Va Beach weekend traffic.

Enjoy

I have gone to the Outer Banks every year since I was 5 yrs old. I lived in Kill Devil Hills for 15 years, came back to help a relative and am moving back in 2 months. I never purchased a sticker. It was received by a 7 yr old child who went on a vacation and brought back what they thought was a great gift and I wasn't going to be rude to her. I don't own a SUV and I don't drive around like I'm somebody. I know very well what the Outer Banks are all about.

I still ask: Don't the business owners have a right to NOT sell something?

FWIW, I don't take 17 all the way down into NC. Once I get past Yorktown and close to Hampton, I get back on 64. It's not a gauranteed time-saver, but a good route if you want to avoid alot of highway driving.

That's not what they scream at all.

They scream "I want people to think I own a 2nd home at the beach, so I'm going to put this stupid-ass sticker on my SUV. The reality is that I'm nowhere close to owning any such thing, but I try to go to OBX every few years if I can afford it!!!"

I've been going to OBX for about 20 years now. Nobody actually says "OBX", but it's an easy way to abbreviate it, kind of like FFX instead of Fairfax.

Although I don't have an OBX sticker because I think stickers on cars look like shit, I think the OBX sticker is great. Do you ever wear a Redskins or Caps shirt? Or maybe a shirt with the brand written on it? (and I know you have Beach Man...by the way, is using the name "beach man" your way of telling everyone that you are an expert beach visitor? Fuck it, I'm going to change my name to surfer man so people know I surf) Anyway, if you've ever worn a shirt representing something like a sports team, it's the same exact thing as having an OBX sticker on your car. You're simply representing something or someplace you like and enjoy. I know people with OBX stickers and they definitely don't own a place down there.

Since you know the locals in OBX so well (seeing your a "beach man"), why don't you ask them to remove the abbreviation, "OBX" from their merchandise?

BUT if you are going to brave it, I suggest taking 17 south as much as possible.

When you get to Chesapeake, skip the toll road and take Battlefield Blvd. South like the locals do and spare yourself from the Chesapeake Highway Robbery Road (toll road). It will cost you about an extra 5 minute, if that.

Fuck you and your 20+ years, when did you start going down, the 90's?
Rookie piece of shit. Get 35-40+ years, then maybe you can make a comment.

Buying that OBX shit adds nothing to the local Outer Banks economy.
All it does is puts money in one man's pockets.
The Outer Banks community had nothing to do with the OBX branding.
So don't think that the locals wanted it or that you're supporting the Outer Banks when you buy that shit.
Support the community more by buying something that says "Outer Banks"
I bet you buy all your OBX gear at Wings.
You're nothing but another fine example of what is ruining the Outer Banks.

For a decade now, I've gone the other direction. Avalon, New Jersey. Yeah, driving on I-95 northbound is exhausting but once I cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge, I have about 6 different ways I can go to the shore.

Only once out of about the 30 times I've done this drive has it taken me more than 4 hours from Centreville.

Say what you want about Jersey but the beaches and little towns south of Atlantic City are damn nice.

The locals hate the acronym "OBX" so much that the state used it as a prefix on special NC license plates that were quickly sold out so they had to add an extra digit (eliminated the hyphen) to allow more to be made. So, no they do not hate that acronym but I think anyone would sound douchey using it in their speech.

Everything north of Hatteras has been overrun by vacationers from landlocked northern states like PA, Ohio, etc. Most NC residents go to the beaches near Wilmington because they are easier to get to via I-40 (though NC 64 has been improved considerably in recent years in an effort to lure more NC residents to the Outer Banks). The Outer Banks might as well be a part of VA -- it is more or less an extension of the Norfolk/VA Beach area/market.

Saturday daytime traffic on I-95 and I-64 is just terrible. You can be going only 5-10 mph for hours at a time.

If you leave NoVa by 4 a.m. on Saturday morning, you will make it to the Currituck Sound bridge before there is a major backup there.

Otherwise go for Friday or Sunday arrivals. While still a lot of traffic at least it usually is moving.

Twice I have left Saturday evening around 5:30 and hit little to no traffic. First time, got to Kill Devil Hills MP 3 at 9:45 and that was with a Sonic stop. Second time, not quite as good back up on 95 past Doswell and too late to make a Rt 1 escape, so took about 5 hours. Still not bad, though.

Dont move to OBX. Locals hate people transferring in. Unless your great great grandfather was born on the island, you will not find a decent job, or be accepted into the business or social community. Pick another place and let them wither into the sea. Its what they want. Just roll the bridge up and leave them on their island.

What the previous poster states is sad but true. And Don't even think about moving to the next island down. Even going to te local grocery there gets you the toothless, "The fuck you doin on my island?" Stares from the locals.

Great place to visit, bad place to live (unless you want to develop a drug problem)

That's what I thought it meant. A SUV full of obnoxious kids.
Anyway, there's nothing wrong with the Outer Banks that a category 5 hurricane can't repair.

All these old posts about the OBX sticker are pathetic. It's a fucking sticker, take a midol and get over it. Real men have better things to think about than a fucking sticker with letters on it on the back of someone else's car.

You have to understand jealousy. When the best vacation you can afford is an afternoon to Burke Lake Park, you're going to hate on those that have it better than you.

We have a DK [Duck] sticker on the car.

Only way to cut down on traffic is to leave aroung 3:30 am, like we do. 95-295/64/158/168 - nothing fancy. If the Border Station parking lot looks like Wal-Mart on Xmas eve, you're fucked once you drive through the boonies and get to the bridge and head north - 2 hours from there to Duck. There are "secret" routes that drop you off farther up the Duck Road, but everyone knows them so they're not much good anymore.

Have to agree with a lot of this. I have been going to Hatteras since the late 70's and what has happened to the Outer Banks is criminal. It used to be a haven for fisherman and birdwatchers and people interested in getting away from it all. Now it's just NOVA South with all the NOVA assholes. Putt putt golf, go kart tracks, cheap crappy restaurants, miles of SUV's with screaming kids inside.

You used to be able to get a decent room for about $30. Now even the rundown beach slums like Owens Motel, which hasn't been remodeled or updated in 40 years, want's $150 a night! You can't even drive on the beach anymore to surf fish without a $50 permit!

Once the word got out that there was a pristine beach with no niggers about an hour south of Va Beach, it all went to hell. I for one would welcome a Cat 5 hurricane to clean the place out.

Nags Head and vicinity fucked up many decades ago when they didn't regulate and control the amount of homes and commercial shit being built there.

Almost a year, time to bring it up again.
Thank you all for purchasing my OBX stickers. What started as a simple man trying to make a buck off tourists has now turned into a well-studied plan on ridding the OBX of local fags. Do you have any idea how many locals have hung themselves after seeing too many fucking stickers?
Good. Fucking drug-addict pussies, anyway.

That is why I continue all the way down to Ocracoke. Take the ferry across and leave all the trash behind. You can still get rooms for less than $100/night.

Not sure why everyone is so butt hurt about OBX stickers. Seems like a douchey, hipster stance to hate them. Whatever.

While all you idiots are headed with all of creation to the beach I am going the opposite way to the mountains. Got a sweet deal for this weekend at The Greenbriar. They even promised a waterfront room. Have fun at the beach chumps.

Leave your home in nova around 2 am friday night\saturday morning to beat the obx traffic. Just chill at a public beach for a few hours before you grab the keys to the rental.

When we leave from Centreville to head down to Nags Head with my crew, we leave the day before, and rent a cheap crappy room in Nags Head. We beat the rush, and we split the nights rent evenly with everyone in my crew.

We party, drink, and if we tear the shit out of the room nobody gives a shit. We just roll out the next morning, and catch some AM grub, and head to the ocean front beach house.

You're full of shit. Unless you booked the room 6 months in advance there's no vacancy at hotels there for the rest of the season.

Uh yeah, so then maybe he planned the whole thing 6 months in advance like everybody else...
