HVAC Advice Needed
Posted by: Kiev ()
Date: December 18, 2007 01:53PM

I have been living without much heat in the past 48 hours, and I would really appreciate any advice.

My story:

My air handler motor is dying, only working 30 minutes at a time before slowing down and coming to a complete stop, accompanied with humming noise & some burning smell.

So, I got the replacement motor today and will go ahead and replace the old one.

One thing I want to make sure - do I need to balance the actual wheel?

I belive the clips are all in place still.

Any other related advice would really be appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hmm. Hire someone who is HVAC certified to fix your heater?

FYI - I would make sure you have fresh batteries in your CO2 detectors while you are at it.

Why would I pay someone $600+ to replace a $150 part, which takes 2 hours to do.

No CO2 here, all power equipment.

Because it sounds like you might fuck it up and it could end up coasting you more coinage.

No.

I am assuming you are replacing the fan or blower motor in the furnace? (Commonly called the squirrel cage in HVAC)

It is nice to have the fan level or balanced but I've never seen anyone take the time to do that and I have installed a couple of furnaces with friends in the HVAC business. So no.

There maybe a place to add some oil to the bearings and you probably want to do that or make sure it has been oiled.

Hope that helps, it should be very simple to do.

Oh, almost forgot, you should complete the replacement by 3pm and head to the local happy hour after for it to be a complete HVAC repair.

Its the blower motor, inside the air handler.
I think the bearings are sealed, but I will check.

Thank you!

You should be able to handle that repair.

Just be careful with the squirrel cage and you should be fine. You will need Allen wrenches to remove the cage.
Happy Holidays and stay warm.

The money you'll save can replace them and more. The blower fan going is very common, and a fairly easy fix and diagnose whats wrong.

You do know where and what the power cut off breaker is I hope, and how to check that its the right one and its all off

replace the capacitor, it's strapped to the side of the motor don't shock yourself, it's ~ $25 and available at local commercial supply store(s), it's usually the problem if a fan is intermittent

it could be the motor overheating (also the capacitor failing: both)

that could be due to a loose ground (lowered amperage can cause overheating)

if your quick and the winding coatings (famous electrical burning smell) re-seals, your motor may still be good

but the motors are not terribly expensive erither

either way you need to know why it failed and how old it is or you'll be back here again soon !

get the capacitor while your there

if your whole jig vibrates after you replace the motor make sure it doesn't - it will eat all your blower power you'll have no airflow. it should sound smooth and placing your hand on the furnace wall: feel no real vibration and certainly hear no shuddering vibration

* clean it out, dust will kill anything

* check all the connections and insure they're tight. hvac in the area have allot of "nut fastened" connections that, during operation or by maintenance: might be loose (ground) contacts

it's probably jsut the capacitor they have to be changed regularly. it's a flask sized object strapped to the motor (most models)

if your cap fails regularly (and given the smell, but ignoring the noise), check your grounds

clean and check grounds anyway

nothing wrong with a new motor but you may not need one

When we have problems with something, my opinion is that it should be seen by a specialist, in order to solve the problem in the most correct way. A year ago, I had no idea about this area, but I decided to learn something new for myself, and I accidentally stumbled upon this site https://www.electricianclasses.com / that caught my attention, and I decided to apply. It is good for a boy to know this area, because there may be various situations in which this knowledge will help you. I’m really happy that I did these classes, because the information I learned helped me in many situations.

Actually if the capacitor goes bad your fan will "hum" as the motor oscillates between poles via the armatures.
