people aren't interested in this because the press release reads like it was a justified shooting. people on this board are only interested in instances when cops maybe make the wrong choice and its a questionable shooting. nobody here cares when cops do the right thing or just are doing their jobs, they only care when they F up and then cry foul and whine about a police state and yada yada yada

This is true - I do not care when the person I give absolute life-or-death power over my family does the right thing.

Fairfax is in the news more and more every day. It must be driving the Fairfax P.R. people nuts! How can they protect the sterling image they want to project? The lesson here is when the cop's tell you to drop it, drop it, or else.

Easy there. You are making some pretty big assumptions from a very vague press release. What was the weapon? How far away was the man when sh.ot? How threatening was the person being? Is there video? If this guy had anything but a gun and was shot multiple times from distance, this may be excessive use of force. Let the investigation pan out before making claims of police just doing their jobs. If I live next to this guy I'd rather NOT have a bunch of gunfire going on. If he had a gun then F him but otherwise, use a taser gun. Something smells of one cop firing prematurely and at least one other firing in reaction to his partners shot.

Why dont you go by the police station and get some real intel for us?. Keep fucking with police here and you will get a bunch of slugs like PG and DC, Call the police there and see what kind of response you get, mildly interested in your problem at best. The cops there learned that actually doing your job will bring nothing but the wrath of monday morning quarterbacks on their ass with support from jelly filled politicions that cower to the press. Watching COPS and court TV has made a lot of authorities on police work..,

You know, it isn't that fucking bad here. Try hanging out in little havana down in Miami, and you'll change your fucking tune. This is still the suburbs, and yeah shit is fucked up everywhere, but it's still pretty safe to walk down the street.

Or hell, take a little trip into Manassas if you want some perspective

The "arrests on that street" date back to 2003 and the majority are traffic violations. Type in any street in a large development and you will find the same, so there is no need to go into hysterics. I agree with Seriously?- it really isn't that bad here.

This made me laugh! Shot multiple times? Excessive use of force?

Good Lord, if it is determined that he needs to be shot, then the cop needs to shoot as many times as necessary. It is folly to try and second guess someone who is in harm's way and makes a split second decision. How many shots should a policeman take? If 1 shot kills the bad guy what difference does it make if he's riddled with buller holes? You don't shoot to wound, if it's necessary to shoot then shoot to stop, if that means the bad guy dies then so be it.

Is Kendra Way like Hagel Circle in Lorton? I mean is it like a public housing complex? The # of arrests on the ticket search is amazing. I live in Cville, and never knew there was so much filth in our community. Wish those people would just leave.

Watching the news it looked like someone went berserk in the house, all the windows busted out and those witnessesinterviewed looked like something between trailer park and 3rd world clientel. That combined with the variety of arrests from the locals must make for a real nice place to live. I guess if he was looking for a fight, he got it.

VERY nice man. Always looked out for my Mom. Always wanted her aware of suspicious people in the neighborhood. It's a nice neighborhood. Directly across from Centreville Multiplex.

For any one wondering what he was shot with it was buck shot. They actually tried to save this guy. They where going to fly him to the hospital with Fairfax One, they where setting up a landing zone at the multiplex but he was 10-601 (I remember this one from the day with the shooting in Springfield unfortunately) before they could land. Too bad he just couldn't put the dam gun down.
Got to love the scanner.

The question is why have the Fairfax police failed to disclose that this man was a fellow officer. When the public discovers that he was Hispanic, suspicion will begin to mount. Just to throw some more sauce on this fucked up event, the man was a former Marine who served honorably in Iraq.

Just because an individual is armed does not mean he is a threat. Police did something wrong here, I can smell it. They came to man's home and shot him dead in his garage. He saw fellow officers and approached. They saw the gun held by a fit Hispanic and shot to quickly. Little did they know they killed an honorable and productive member of the community.

Hey Stupidnull stop listening to the scanner retard. He was not shot with buck shot! Also it is 10-61 and by the way if you want to use 10 codes get them straight. FFX has gone away from 10 codes as most areas and went to plain english. Yes unfortunate that this guy lost it and was in law enforcement. So all the police haters can shut their pie hole until you can say you have been in any of these type of high stress do or die situations.

Yes he was a good friend/marine/law enforcement officer... Get your facts right... He snapped and was taken to the hospital that day for a pscyh exam and fell through the cracks.. So Mr. Det. La Raza is guess you knew that but still smell something. May the man rest in peace and hopefully with a full investigation by the local police and who he worked for all can learn from this event.

Some police believe they should be immune from scrutiny and still be given privileged status within our community. However, they entered the profession knowing well its stresses and responsibilities. Some are unequipped deal with it and others choose to ignore them in these high stress situations. We send boys half their age into far more stressful situations in far away lands for half your pay. You are entrusted with the safety of your fellow citizens. But your sense of privilege gives you a "shoot first, ask question later" mentality. But, guess what. Today you killed a war hero, fellow officer, respected neighbor and husband. Sad day.

La Rafuckingcheckurfacts!! Yes he was a good man and snapped!!! If you know so much you would know that he was taken to the hospital for a psych exam!! He lost it and it does not matter at this point to say the police were over-aggressive!! he tore the shit out of his townhouse and stood in his garage with a loaded weapon and refused to put it down.. What would you have done oversees or here?

I propose that LaRaza and 6x be hired by FFX County Police to be deployed in situations where suspects are armed with guns. Since they think the cops act to fast without any facts the cops can send them in and wait for the suspect to shoot one of them that way the police shooting can be considered justified

The individuals who did this can save the facts for internal affairs. Regardless of the outcome their record will be forever stained with the blood of a fellow officer.

Agreed.

Everyone knows you don't carry guns around like it's not a problem with cops telling you to put it down.

ESPECIALLY when YOU are a cop yourself. YOU should know what will happen more than the average citizen.

And if you're too "crazy" to know the consequences of your actions, then you're too "crazy" to be trusted with a weapon and getting shot is the only option.

How is this the shooting officers fault again?

Fairfax police officers fatally shot a man with a shotgun in Centreville after he refused orders to drop his weapon.

Ricardo Leon was a police officer himself. The 34-year-old man was a lieutenant with the Naval Observatory police, the force that patrols the grounds where the vice president lives.

Police spokeswoman Mary Ann Jennings says officers were called to a townhome in the 6100 block on Kendra Way for report of a disturbance. Upon arrival, the home was surrounded. Officers in the front saw a man in the garage with a gun. They ordered the man to drop his weapon, but he ignored them. He then pointed the gun at officers, who shot him.

Jennings says officers tried to resuscitate the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A woman, who was inside the home at the time of the incident, called 911 to report the disturbance. There's no word on her relationship to the suspect. A neighbor also called police.

A neighbor says Leon was yelling and tossing belongings out of windows.

“He was throwing everything. He busted a couple of windows, he threw a shotgun out there, threw a helmet out there,” Ashley Daniels said. Several windows on the second-floor of the home are busted out.

Daniels says she heard police tell the man to put his hands up. “They would wait for few minutes and then I heard the big shot,” she said.

Neighbors say they thought of Leon as an even-tempered, patriotic veteran who loved police work, his motorcycle and corvette.

“If it's one of their own and something like this happens, it's really, really sad,” said Debbie Landreth.

Leon had served in the U.S. Marine Corps and lived in the Centreville home with his wife. The investigation is ongoing.

Why do I only have five seconds??? & maybe I should take cover....

Because 5 seconds is the average time (through average of watching dashboard cameras of officers in struggle) it takes for a cop to lose control of a hostile subject.

Taking cover is fine, but it leaves you unable to incapacitate th individual, leaving him free and open to keep shooting at others. It's your JOB to eliminate that threat, not allow it to continue (see the LAPD Bank robbery shooting)

I was wrong and overly generous with the five seconds. If I am facing you and my intent is to raise the weapon and fire, the time is more like less than two seconds.

Find cover? Are you really serious. I would have to assess where there is cover, will the cover provide protection and will I catch a round in the back when I turn to run to cover. I dont know anyone who can do that much processing of information in less than two seconds.

I am not trying to insult you but you share a view of police shootings with many others and that is what you see on some fictional cop show.

Was he shooting at others, it doesnt sound like it but that makes little to no difference. Are the cops supposed to wait until someone starts firing before they open fire? If they did and he shot a bystander you would be on here demanding the cops be fired for not taking action.

I would recommend, after lots of training, you go to a pistol range and practice on targets that turn and face you. See how well you shoot at say 10 yards keeping in mind the paper targets are not shooting back, they are not running at you and you dont have to worry about where your bullets hit since you have a backstop.

A final thought, if you are holding a gun and the cops tell you to drop it do as they say. Later on you can file your complaint, if you have one, but until the situation is resolved do what they say.

What makes you think that he wasn't shot with buck shot? Car10A said he did. about the 10 code I wasn't sure whether it was 61 or 601 because I couldn't find the code any where else that would mean dead. And at the time the only other place I saw the code I was thinking of was on the thread about the shooting where someone referenced it as 10-601 so I figured I misheard it. Anyway I did eventually find the list of Fairfax specific 10 codes on Radio Reference. Thanks for correcting my error. And just so you know I'm not hating on the police they did everything right in this situation

They were not called to just his street but to his house for a disturbance. They told him to drop the weapon he refused. Sorry Bro but you walk up to cops with a shotgun they tell you to drop it, you know what you do? You drop it. Didnt they teach you that in CWP class, if not they should have.

I'm sure the dude didn't threaten the FCPD dudes. He was probably drunk and just walking toward them. FCPD have adopted a shoot first ask questions later mentality. Like blowing away that unarmed crazy dude months back. It's OK - when the lawsuit is settled just raise Real Estate tax rates to pay for the settlement.

So far it looks like the officers were totally justified. It takes less than a second to point a shotgun and fire. If he was holding a shotgun, walking toward the officers and didn't drop it when ordered then they had to shoot him.

This is so full of hatred when most of you don't even know the guy. This is a shock to anyone that knew Rico personally. Rico was a man that everyone else would rely on when they needed help, he always saw the light in everything and always had the best stories on the block. Rico was loved by an enormous amount of people and these events have devastated dozens of folks. There are grown men crying over this loss. Rico snapped, he was not a mentally ill individual... we will likely never know what caused him to loose it. Please have some dignity and respect towards all involved. Also please remember that his widow may see this just as we see this. Come on, let's be humane.

While being drunk may excuse bad judgement on the guys fault I guess you want the police to give him a breath test to see if he has been drinking. She has been through a lot in the past few days that this has developed, so it is doubtful that she would be cruising the web....but you never know, I am sure the family wants to stay abreast of the coverage. At the same time, there are inbiciles on here that called her a pig. Tiffany is a beautiful person who was head over heels with Rico.. in fact, these two got married 2-3 years ago! How would she feel seeing something like that, even if it is later on? Comments like that also hurt everyone that knew him personally.

Take it for what it is but a LEO knows exactly what happens when commands are not complied with. Rico was not hard of hearing and whether or not he was drunk, he would have known the outcome. He knew how the Officers would have reacted. Rico didn't come out with his handgun, he came out with the shotgun...he knew what he was doing. Also, there is speculation that he was found in his garage with a knife in an attempt to commit suicide. Again, from all available information, this was thought-out at least somewhat.

Porky, I am writing from a cellphone where the m and the n are close together...I'm sorry that your argument rests on a typo. Hey question, are you also one of those whiny assholes that call the po-leece when you need something? Too bad you don't remember what these men do for your ass to be wasting the valuable air by your sorry existence... try holding your breath, maybe the Ozone layer wouldn't deteriorate so quickly.

6x.... knowing Rico, it is highly doubtful that he really intended to shoot at the Officers. I think it came down to visibility... the ofcs may not have spotted the gun as quickly as a shotgun. If he was ready to "go", it would have made sense to bring out the larger weapon to also create more fear in the Ofcs thus triggering the shooting quicker. Just my 2 cents.

Yes he was - how much responsibility is being placed on the hospital that let him out? I've heard the diagnosis ranged from dehydration to a heat stroke. I am not sure if he was taken down for a mental evaluation, I think they just reported strange behavior that quickly got attributed to something else. The truth is, this kid should have never left the hospital, esp to return somewhere where firearms are easily accessible.

6X, I shoot trap a few times a year and I can tell you I'm typically hitting clays that are farther away than those officers likely were from the garage.

This shouldn't take a lot of thinking here... despite the horrible outcome no one wanted, when officers order someone to drop a brandished firearm and he/she doesn't do it, the officers and other innocents in the neighborhood are in immediate danger. If this guy was a police officer, especially a firearms instructor/SWAT member as rumored, he knew that.

He was either out of his mind and didn't know what he was doing, or he intended harm to the officers, or it was suicide-by-cop. All three are dangerous to officers.

I have plenty of threads here where I am critical of FCPD policies and procedures. But shooting an armed person who, after having wrecked his house, is heading toward them holding a firearm and disregarding orders to drop it won't be one of them. There is no stopping to contemplate the actions of someone doing that.
