wikipedia and other sources say the armadillo range could have expanded into virginia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Armadillo_range_expansion.png

I guess it's possible...

"Their range is as far east as South Carolina and Florida and as far north as Nebraska; they have been consistently expanding their range over the last century due to a lack of natural predators and have been found as far north as southern Illinois and Indiana."

When I was a kid, I used to like The Clash's "Rock the Casbah" video because of the little armadillo running around.

These critters are disgusting. No useful purpose other than to compete
with possums for road kill. I say kill them all before they establish
themselves. They're almost as bad as illegal immigrants.

If you grab them by their tail they will dig a hole for you.

As of summer 2014 they are slowly moving into Virginia in the eastern counties along the NC border. There have been several sightings this summer. Their numbers are small so far but they are definitely here.

During the Great Depression, armadillos were called "Hoover hogs". People ate them.

Gentlemen, Surely we have not stooped so low as to refer to the Hispanic immigrants as "armadillos"! Yes, they have come here from the south. No they don't have leprosy. They are only spreading the infectious diseases that white people won't do anymore.

There's a story in the south that children are told about how touching an armadillo will make your skin fall off. Its because 1 out of 3 armadillos carry leprosy. Fact

Good God, that is one ugly mofo. Right out of Jurassic Park. I screamed the first time I saw the beady eyes of a possum at night on our patio. Can't imagine if one of those things showed up.

Pretty sure they are related to sloths also. Rodent like but reptilian at the same time. They do look like throwbacks to the age of dinosaurs, just like alligators.

I think it would be GREAT if they were in Northern Virginia too.

Armadillos eat dead animals with gusto and not just road kill. They can
carry rabies, distemper, and a whole host of other diseases. Why take
the risk?

Saw a dead 'dillo in coastal NC a few years back. Wouldn't be too surprised if they've made it up the coast. Didn't know they ate road kill.

I swear I have one living around my yard. Something is digging a massive tunnel under my porch steps. First thing I thought of was an amordillo bc I have watched nature shows all my life and remember seeing their destructive ways. Any thoughts, should I contact animal control?

Everything is moving northward due to the climatic changes. The plant planting zones are also moving northward. That means the scourges of the south, like red fire ants, velvet ants, Africanized bees, and eventually huge boas and pythons may start showing up farther north.

I think I've seen a possum in Virginia. We just moved to Tampa and I saw a couple baby armadillos they were cute! Only seen some adults during the day near the beach and they were oblivious to people. Half blind I hear and yes don't touch they do carry leprosy. Yikes. Mostly out at night and can do a lot of damage in your yard digging holes for grubs.

The vultures here are everywhere. We see them eating armadillos a lot. We call them armadillos on the half shell because that's all that is left when they are done. Lol

Rumors of multiple recent sightings in the wooded area along the Meherrin River in VA just north of the North Carolina border. Anyone know anything about this?
