Sobriety Checkpoint Results in Reston Police District

Fairfax County police officers from around the county conducted a sobriety checkpoint to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers on Saturday, July 16 from 11:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. Sunday. All motorists were stopped and drivers were checked to assure that their abilities to drive had not been impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Approximately 855 motorists passed through the checkpoint on Reston Parkway near Sunrise Valley Drive. Three arrests were made for DWI; one criminal arrest was made and ten summonses were issued for miscellaneous traffic offenses.

Three auxiliary officers and eight police officers participated in this operation.

Great work FCPD.

Funny how none of the anti-checkpoint zealots on FFU had anything to say about this one. :-)

Probably because that checkpoint got the hell tweeted out it that night. I never seen so many crazy suggestions on how to go around a roadblock. ^5 to tweeter who suggested using the new Reston metro parking lot.

Roadblocks are useless with todays cell phone technology.

Three is on the high side for these, I think, so I guess that's good for them. Three out of 855 and the rest--with the exception of whatever one dude was arrested for and the tickets they wrote for expired inspection or whatever, which they weren't actually looking for--innocent citizens being stopped by authorities while going about their perfectly legal business. I still think they're worthless.

There isn't much to say about it but I can if you want. 0.35% DUI arrest rate didn't blow the doors off. In my thread examining the May results there was a 2 for 604 in there, 0.33%.

Three arrests for DUI is only "on the high side" if you ignore the high number of motorists stopped. 855 motorists stopped was higher by over 100 drivers than any of the examined May checkpoints.

i really enjoy seeing the results of these when they stop over a thousand people, and not a single DUI arrest.

If you look up the weekly police reports for June almost each week they gave out over 70 DWI tickets.

its almost mathematically impossible that less then 1% of people would be driving impaired at that hour of the night on a saturday right near a high concentration of bars like RTC. my guess is it would be at least 5% probably 10%. the checkpoints must consist of something where they only ask you if you have been drinking and if you are dumb enough to respond yes you get yourself in trouble.

That kind of goes with the point I made in the thread where I broke all that out. If they get 70 people in a week, and three of them are from a checkpoint inconveniencing over 800 drivers and dedicating many police resources, it seems time would be better spent doing whatever they do to get the other 67 elsewhere.

@justsayin - you totally schooled me on that point - I was all for the DUI checkpoints till you called me out, made me THINK about what the reality of it is all about.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
