NOVA ObGyn issues
Posted by: foster729 ()

I am new to the area and am scheduling appointments with new doctors. Has anyone had issues with the ObGyn Associates of N.Va? I ask because I called a couple of months ago to schedule an appointment- the day of the appointment came, and they said they didn't have me in the system or scheduled at all. Today is my second appointment, and the same thing has happened! This is ridiculous. BUT, they deal with things like high-risk pregnancy there, it is pretty close to my house, and there are multiple doctors on staff. I was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year and am trying to conceive, making it high-risk. Should I cut my losses and find another doctor that specializes in that, even though it will be far away?

Is this doctor's office really that poorly run, as shown by their inability to keep appointments? Or has anyone had experiences with them that are positive and feel like I should stick it out?

Thank you all!

Thank you for the advice. However, that is a bit more general than I was hoping- even though that is all good practice for making appointments.

I guess I'm wondering if someone could let me know if they have been to this practice and let me know if the doctors there are good enough for it to be worth me taking the time to try and get in there again.

Thanks!

I have gone to them for the last 5 years. I will say the support staff can be rude and not the most helpful but the doctors and nurses there are the best. Dr. Tacktill delivered by son and he could not have made it any smoother. I was induced early for preclampsia and from when I went in Wednsday night to when I had my son the next afternoon I saw 3 of the 4 doctors. Dr. Bissell came over to check on my because she was the doctor who saw me that day and wanted to check on me, she came in the morning before going in on her own time, that meant a lot. I am pregnant now with my second and even though i've since moved and they are not close I still make the drive because they are the best.

It sounds from that response that you should continue your pattern of making appointments and having them mysteriously disappear because they are good doctors.

Well, I'll ask one more question, then. There aren't many OBs in the area that deal with high-risk pregnancies. Would anyone be able to recommend a different doctor that they perhaps go to that they like? If not, I'll go on my merry way. Thanks in advance!

I hated OB/GYN Associates. Physicians for Women on Seminary Rd. is great.

Capital Women's Care is good too. They have a few offices around Fairfax, including one at 123 and Fairfax Blvd (29/50).

Kathy wolf...delivered both my kids and my wife was high risk for both. Staff is very friendly and anyone else I know who has gone to her continues to recommend her to others as well. It might be difficult to get an appt though because she has such a good rep. She's located in falls church in the office bldgs across from fairfax hospital.

I agree but they run the sono lab at the hospital does he actually see patients and deliver kids? I met him once during my wifes second pregnancy and he's very good but you have to be able to take his straight up ness. He's not high and mightyy but he sort of gives that vibe at first impression....so if you can deal with a strong personality he's a good one to see as well.

yes he does. Due to the length of our pregnancy he had another associate (which we had frequently met with) deliver our kid. She was excellent and saved my wife's life during some complications.

I found him quite warm hearted but straight to the point, hard to find someone like that especially in a high risk practice where safety and sometimes intensive medical care is needed over "warmness".

If you decided to research everything on the internet make sure you don't just come up to your OB and tell them what to do based on your google research.

If you are one of those natural birth BS hippy crapo non drug people and are having a high risk pregnancy take the doctors advice before vomitting your demands with natural birthing, no drugs etc...

Um, no, that is not me. While it will be high-risk, give me the drugs, please, and I will be in the hospital ASAP. Not sure what gave you that impression and you started to just go off about random stuff that doesn't apply, but whatever.

To everyone else, thanks so much for your opinions!!!

Hi i don't know if you changed doctors but i really like obgyn associates on n.va. My mom had both me and my brother with them and Ive been going there for 10 years now. Most of the original doctors who were there when my mom started have left except Dr.Bissel who i love i have seen her getting alot of bad review on other website. But she really cares and listens. If you stay with her you'll be happy/

Have been a patient for over 20 years and have been very happy with the doctors there except Dr. Bissel. The doctors who have since retired were excellent. Have seen Dr.Pham recently who has been there a few years and was pleased with the care.

Not sure what happened with your appointments but the office is usually very, very busy so I'd call early in the a.m. to make an appointment and explain what happened. It may have possibly been someone new on the staff who messed up. The staff has always been very efficient and have never had a problem over the years. Good luck!

Dr. Khoury is nothing short of amazing. You can't go wrong with his department. And Drs Andersen and Manaavi - at an OB/GYN office nearby - are absolutely amazing as well - a big office, but they are tops in the area in knowledge and care. A better OB practice can make a HUGE difference. Good luck to you.

Hello, I hope that you finally got an appointment. I have been seeing Dr Silas from this practice for over 5years now. I have stage 4 Endometriosis and he has done all my surgeries/treatments etc. He is WONDERFUL! Very knowledgable and an amazing bed side manner! Sometimes the staff can be a bit annoying but in my opinion the level of care you receive from the DR way out weighs some minor annoyance from an inexpereienced person behind the phone. I also would have called and ask to speak to the office manager. SHe is great too!!

I wish you the best of luck but i would recommend DR Silas or Dr. Dobrinski to any and everyone! They are the best in NOVA!!

God Bless ANd I hope you are able to conceive.

I'm an amateur OB/Gyn but would be happy to take a look at your "issue".

My last patient, Kiesha Johnson, can vouch for me. I'm very good looking and wear a fashionable hat!

OBGYN Associates of Northern Virginia, located at the INOVA Alexandria Healthplex is in all honesty terrible. I went through my first pregnancy with them and had such a miserable experience. Most of the admin and nursing staff is rude and the doctors themselves are nothing to write home about. Dr. Pham is curt and can be a bit abbrasive, Dr. Aggarwal hasn't been through a pregnancy herself and makes diagnoses based on textbook knowledge, Dr. Bissell is also curt and Dr. Santiago is okay...but that's it. Okay. It's clear that these doctors are focused on the business and money aspect of their practice as opposed to truly caring for their patients. I'd liken their office to a cattle car, where one pregnant women is prodded through after the next and is required to see all of the doctors instead of being given the opportunity to hone a relationship with just one or two. If you have the choice, run as fast as you possibly can to one of the other OBGYN practices in the area.

I have to disagree with NOVA Mama, although I can see how one can have that impression of the docs. I was first referred there because of a high risk pregnancy and have been going there for 5 years. I've delivered two very healthy babies, despite preeclampsia both times, and am now being guided through breast cancer testing by them. Dr. Pham is direct. Some may find that to be curt,I personally found it to be refreshing. She gets down to business, doesn't sugar coat it, doesn't waste time. She is also a very conservative doctor. The minute something seems like it could be problematic, she is on top of it and getting whatever testing and specialists in on the problem that she thinks are necessary. Dr. Bissell is a little less conservative. She is more likely to watch for a little bit before taking action. Both approaches have their merits and their drawbacks. Dr. Santiago is very sharp but has a softer approach than the other two. A better doctor for someone who needs more emotional attention. Dr. Aggarwal is the newest to the practice and I don't know much about her. I've always found the nurses to be really friendly and caring. The office staff has been hit-or-miss and I know they had a big turnover and simultaneously implemented a new computer system last year which did make their administration less than perfect for a while, but they have seemed better with that stuff recently in my opinion. The wait, though, can be really long. Book appointments first thing in the morning or first thing after lunch and you'll usually be very close to your appointment time.
