Old Italian place on Duke St on outskirts of Old Town Alexandria where Whole Foods now sits?

Does anybody remember an old sit down and carry out Italian restaurant on Duke St, on the block now occupied by Whole Foods? It was an old mom and pop place, in an old and run-down strip center (might have had a Pep Boys next to it). I used to go there years ago when I lived a few blocks away. Good pizza. Had some really tasty pasta dishes there, too.

When it was about to be torn down for the lifeless Ballston-type redevelopment of that corridor, I remember that they said they were reopening somewhere close by, but for the life of me cannot remember where. Or even what the restaurant's name was.

If anybody remembers the restaurant's name and know if they re-opened elsewhere, please let me know!

I remember there was a Trak-Auto and a bank in that strip mall.

Nope. Not Pasta Peasant. I miss that place, too. Pasta Peasant was a sit-down restaurant and is now Kabob King or something like that. The place I'm wondering about was a lot bigger, had a sit-down area, but was primarily a take-out / deli place.

The place I'm talking about was several blocks south of Pasta Peasant's location. Where the Whole Foods currently stands and near the old Trak Auto.

OK. I figured it out:

Paesano Italian Deli & Restaurant, formerly of 1724 Duke St. Now supposedly somewhere along Jamieson Street near the Hoffman Center.

Anybody been to the new location? Are they still in business?

There used to be an italian place at 1300 King Street before Pines of Florence moved in. Very homey.

Oh, damn.

Quattro Formaggi's exterior looks so different, I never associated the two!

I'll admit that I've driven down Duke, seen the ritzier-looking Quattro Formaggi sign, and lamented that the old dumpy Italian place were still around. The joke is on me.

I still lovingly remember Paesano's pasta putanesca that was as wonderfully rich as homemade... no mashing of anchovies required.

Thanks, Rob! I know where I'm going to pizza this weekend
