What's with JFK? The Junks have the whole week off this week? I thought they were staggering their vacations so we would not be denied their witty banter and insightful analysis.

As for some of their regular prgramming, it just seems to me they punt the whole weekend. So much for "live and local" radio, then they put on garbage like Parker and Parker (now with one less Parker) and Kevin and Rock. They've stuck K&R on this morning....way to piss away those ratings even more CBS....

Kevin and Rock is horrible. I don't know how they have job on that station. Oh, wait, they will give anyone a shot on the weekends.

Kevin and Rock are horrible. But, much like Chad Dukes, if you suck on the teet of the Junkies, all doors are open at that station.

They were debating whether or not the fan should have given Jeter's 3,000 hit ball back. Who the fuck cares? (Mike and Mike were doing the same thing, so it must be a slow sports day).

As did every other sports talk show in the world, how original. I did hear the start of the un-named Parker show on Sunday and he was babbling about it then. It's been said before, but good sports radio should derive from a host who knows what they are talking about, not simply opening the phone lines after throwing out a idea like, "Wizards uniforms, do you like the change?" or "NFL lockout, do you think it's a bad idea?".

These two morons know less than the other morons on that station. I cannot see any reason in the world for them to have a show, let alone filling in a show on morning drive.

I wonder if WJFK is getting content ideas from the CBS suits. I mean, are all Fan stations this vapid? If you listen to the Sports Reporters on WTEM, they are worlds apart from the crap on WJFK. Is Baltimore's Fan station this idiotic, too?

It's worse. Trust me. But you're right that the Sports Reporters isn't a bad show -- it picks up a lot of energy every day in the 5PM hour when their third chair shows up. It's not unlike the Tony K. show on WTEM -- he has a rotating group of people who come in and yak with him. Face it, most of these clods run out of conversation pretty quickly, and that's where topics like Pete Rose and an NCAA football playoff get tossed out. Nothing wrong with taking calls, but the host has to be able to drive the show.

It's not just relegated to the radio. Kevin of Kevin and Rock yesterday commented at how he was bothered that the women's US soccer team was not coached by an American. A pretty asinine comment in my opinion.

I believe all the CBS stations across the country that have The Fan format are controlled out of NYC headquarters. I think some group at CBS headquarters got it up their collctive bungholes to kill off guy talk and go with the sports talk format and keep a tight thumbscrew on how things are done.

I think it's one of these CBS suits at headquarters who has a hard on for Lavar Arrington even though he's fucking awful

All Sports Junkies off this week? I too thought they had talked a lot, even last week, that they'd staggered their vacations. hmmmmm breakdown in contract negogiations?
Listened briefly to Sports Junkies this morn in the 5 am best of segment but they were repeating something again. the bit about Radford,va. they've run this segment at least 5 times and I listen randomly . They really have gotten fucking lazy have the Soports Junkies says I

That clip and the one where Lurch poops in the guys driveway in Potomac are on every 3 weeks or so. I hope the contract falls through and they are out of here and have to deal with real jobs. I bet they won't think that is too "money".

Wasn't the team coached by an American when the team imploded over the Hope Solo goalie decision? Now they may repeat 1999. I could give a fuck if an Eskimo from the Yukon is coaching them, as long as they win, right?

Is is possible that the heads of CBS have so much foresight that they realized "shock talk" radio ran its cycle and put this sports crap on purpose. Than 5-7 years down road people will be hungry for "shock talk" again and ratings will be through the roof?

Not that i believe it but just sayin'

I think you put way too much thought into that, not in a bad way, but there is no way the execs are thinking more than the new ratings books and they need to decide what to do to keep their jobs another month.

If you put Howard Stern back on terrestrial radio, he would be in the Top 5 in most markets. The problem isn't whether or not "shock talk" is dead. The problem is good radio versus shitty radio. "Shock talk," for the most part, has become formulaic Morning Zoo-type fodder. There's nothing shocking about it. Stupid passes for shock. Just look at Rob(b) and you'll see what's wrong.

Didn't one of these guys (Kevin or Rock) get arrested for beating his wife? Neither one of them seem particularly intelligent. They sound like they’ve had one too many red bulls, have ADD, and talk over each other constantly. I listened for 30 minutes and got a really bad headache.

I think the Junkies knew that K&R would be filling in for them this week as it was mentioned previously.

I don't know. I don't obsessively follow the ratings like you do. Though I’m sure someone could do better for less money. It can’t be cheap to pay four guys for one show.

Do we really NEED two sports stations in the area? The premise of JFK has been "we're not Dan Snyder's station" and tons of redskins bashing. they picked up the Wizards games, a few Caps games and the Nats. Other than that......do we need them?

No we don't. Unless one sports stations had broader coverage to account for the transplants. Just talked about the hottest teams in sports or most popular in the area.

For example have in depth coverage of the a few NFL teams such as Cowboys, Patriots, Steelers and NYG. For MLB focus on Yankees, Red Sox, and maybe LA Dodgers? I dunno i dont really follow MLB. Then for NBA La Lakers, Celtics, Bulls and Heat???

Grant Paulson...? Is that really the best they can do? Nice guy but not a good radio voice. It doesn't sound like he ended puberty. Isn't his father in the sports business at some capacity.

Holden Kushner is the most legit sports guy they have on staff.

I like Grant, unlike everyone else on the station, he has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of local sports teams and sports in general. You're right about his voice though. He may be better off as a beat reporter rather than a guy with his own show.

Between that and the constant bashing of the coaching staff you would have thought it was the middle of football season. I really think Chad has talent, but he will get nowhere with Lavar bringing him down. If anything, HE is the one wh needs to go, like now. CK was their producer today, there is no way he could ignore how bad this show is.

I realize it is a slow news cycle for sports this time of year, but the Sports Reporters covered the Home Run Derby, Tyler Clippard's selection for the All-Star Game (and whether it was deserved) and whether or not to bench Jason Werth. Also in the news were the Roger Clemens trial, the British Open, coaching moves in the NBA and the Women's World Cup.

But, no, these fucktards had to bitch about Haynesworth...AGAIN! Jesus, W...T...F???

Showing why I literally can not listen to them, WTL. Every week it's Haynesworth, McNabb, Redskin free agents, NFL draft, Lebron James...rinse and repeat.

Throw Lavar's verbal diarrhea on top and it's just too unbearable.

They are the flagship for the Wizards, yet most shows either ignore or bash the Wiz, and now, Leonsis. They have some Caps games, but cannot, CANNOT talknabout hockey because Lafuckface doesn't understand it, so they talk MMA with the players. Ok, I got it, you aren't working for Dan Snyder, but seriously, how long do you think you can survive as simply the station who bashes the Redskins?

The absolute best part of the DCRTV post is that you KNOW that fruit Dave Hughes started calling around trying to confirm the rumor.

True, though everyone has been freaking out about Ollie the Goalie being named an assistant coach.

Pittsburgh is a hateable place, but I was up there on business before the NHL draft and on their CBS "Fan" station they were naming prospects that the Penguins might be able to draft in the first round and discussing in depth scouting reports, potential ceilings, the types of players, etc.

You'd never hear that in Washington; morning, noon, night or weekends.

And it's a shame with this development camp; a kid will probably make the NHL roster this year out of training camp (Cody Eakin) and several others (Orlov, Sjorgen) could play this year. Not that they would know.

But hey, you gotta report on the latest Haynesworth and McNabb rumors and don't forget updates whenever Shanahan takes a dump or when Snyder gets some bad PR.

I've pretty much completely cut JFK out of my consciousness. I am on the road at 5 AM. They replay the same Junkies best of every couple months. Done with it. Podcasts are 1000xs better. Heck even Kirk and Mike are (sometimes anyway).

Afternoons, Lavar is back so no more JFK for me. The guy is unbearable. Last week was like a breath of fresh air with Dukes and Rohland/Danny. Heck, Dukes and Holden Kushner would work better. Basically anyone but: Lavar, Brian Mitchell (awful on air), and Mike Wise.

Yet again, radio's only purpose for me seems to be "traffic and weather on the 8's". For entertainment, I turn elsewhere.

I think Brian Mitchell is the worst. Whoever listened to his tapes and then made the decision to put him on the air should be fired. He is undescipherable.

In fact, at least once during each of his shows his shows he says something that his co-host cannot make out. Then he repeats it and still the co-host (and listeners) have no idea wht he just said twice so he must rephrase or say somethoing else.

It's like a comedy routine. He unlistenable! Lavar is a close second.

I listened to Lavar and Dukes for a little bit yesterday after givin up on it about 6 mos ago. Chad overhead comment for people to call about was how Chris Berman is so out of touch and needs to get better schtick than "back, back, back....", which I tend to agree with. Lavar went on to defend Berman because "he played football"........what? maybe in high-school, and maybe in college, but because, "the guy was a player" gets him a free pass?

I don't know who was the bigger idiot, him for his comments or me for listening...

It's a bit of a joke because they measure their ratings by their "target audience". Which means that during the afternoon drive LaVar and Dukes are rated #2 in the 25-45 male demographics.

No they aren't. If they were, their overall ratings would be significantly higher.

According to DCRTV they were third in the afternoon 25-54 male demo (6/8/2011) and in previous months they were up to the #2 spot. If you factor in male/female in the same age group their rating drops to 14, add the remaining listener base and you get to their 18% rating.

Since I don't know how to access the "money demo" ratings I go by what is reported on these videos and fast forward to the 4:20 mark for the results:

feinstein is an arrogant bastard but he does know sports inside and out and he hates the evil empire of ESPN which i think is a very good thing
Cornholio is also an arrogant bastard but knows way less than feinstein about sports and is a lazy bastard unlike feinstein
they've had a hate/sort of can stand each other relationship for years

i guess the blog sort of gives away that the sports junkies have been resigned to do their shit for another few years yuck

First, 3rd isn't 2nd. Second, their overall ratings were higher, including males, in the third week of May because they were covering the Heat in the NBA playoffs. MOM was scoring big on WJFK, too, during the Caps playoff run. Didn't stop MOM from losing his job and it shouldn't stop Chad and Lavar from losing theirs.

First off, I'm going to shorten my statement so you can see where I said they were in 2nd place in the male demo in past months... see it up there!!!! I'm not in the mood to search for the DaveTV segment that mentions it, but it's in one of his videos.

Secondly, I'm with you regarding LaVar and Dukes in that the second place finish isn't the norm, but it's probably something the two put up on the break-room fridge.

Thanks and I look forward to your post

The occasional bump to 2nd or 3rd place on a key demo is indicative of general sports coverage and not of the show itself. A monkey burping into the microphone can get the same rating if the Caps are in the playoff chase or there's a major signing at Redskins Park. The problem with the inconsistency in ratings is the "make goods" WJFK has to give to sponsors in extra spots when they promise a good number in a key demo and fail to deliver when nothing's going on in the world of local sports (which is quite frequent these days).

Lavar and Dukes are consistently in the top 5 in their money demo, and more often than not in the top 3. They destroy WTEM and have even come close to reeling in WTOP in certain months.

Say what you want about Lavar's ability to speak the English language, but there is no doubting they have consistent ratings and it's been that way since they came on the air 2 years ago. They might hate each other, but the ratings have never been an issue 25-54.

The CBS idiocy continues. Hopefully they were able to at least cut the Junkies' pay. Wonder if there's something behind the "coinciding" decision? Hmmm.

JFK Re-Signs Junks, Wise, Arrington, Not Rohland - 7/15 - A DCRTV source tells us that CBS Radio has re-signed the Sports Junkies even though their contracts weren't up for renewal until September. Ditto with the other major personalities on WJFK, 106.7 The Fan, we're told. Including Mike Wise, Lavar Arrington, and Chad Dukes. CBS wanted everyone's contracts coinciding from this point on, we hear. But the renewals don't include Bill Rohland, whose last JFK day is today. Danny Rhouier will take over the "Overtime" evening slot, we're told. CBS will relocate WJFK from its longtime Fairfax digs to Lanham, where the company's other stations are studioed, by September.....

Contract length is key. If it's for more than a year, then a JFK format change isn't likely I'm thinking...

If CBS were smart, which it hasn't demonstrated itself to be, it would have contract options based on ratings goals.

If LaVar and Dukes are in the 3-4 ranking (men) for the afternoon slot it is only because they are dividing a small portion of WTOPs sloppy seconds between their other competitors. The more telling number to determine their worth would be the % of men listening in the afternoon versus their ranking. For them to go from the 3-4 spot with Men but drop to 14ish (including women), it says a lot more about the % of people actually listening.

I'd be shocked if CBS gave the Junkies any more money, their performance really merits a pay cut, and a one year or you're out clause if the ratings don't improve.

But CBS radio has been, and will continue to be a disaster in DC, but as another poster notes, CBS doesn't have any trouble smelling WTOP's farts so they are happy to get "#2 demo ratings" based on a tiny percentage of listeners.

Chad Dukes is calling that whole post a lie.

Also, why do you care SO MUCH that the Junks get paid less? I mean do you get the remaining money? You just seem so vested in this whole radio thing and really have something against WJFK. It's like you make up every excuse in the world as to why Dukes and Arrington being #2-3 in their key demo doesn't mean anything. It does mean something and is clearly very important.

Well, he also probably wouldn't say "I'll probably be sitting at home on Sunday this season" either.

From Dukes' tweets this afternoon, it doesn't look like he could stand another few years with WJFK as it is today. Either that or the story about everyone else getting contracts is true, and he gets to work the rest of the month knowing he'll be unemployed after July 31. Tough to tell.

Sounds like it.

Think the guy pulled a Riggleman and gave CBS an ultimatum. I guess the "laying the cards on the table" reference was just that.

Complete speculation? He proposed Big O and Dukes for x-amount of money (with or without Lavar). WJFK said, "Yeah, you were suspended a while back and lucky you didn't lose your job then. No thanks."

I would take it his days at WJFK are done. I could see CBS teaming Kushner with Lavar. In fact, that would probably make much more sense than Dukes. Wonder how Dukes will do selling ManGrates?
