Police Investigate Fatal Crash in Fairfax

Fair Oaks Police District: A 27-year-old Burke man was operating a 2009 Mitsubishi Eclipse southbound on Shirley Gate Road near Mattie Moore Court on Monday, July 4 shortly before 4 a.m. The vehicle struck a curb and the driver lost control. The Mitsubishi went off the roadway to the right and struck a large tree. This impact caused the vehicle to spin and rotate onto the driver’s side. The Mitsubishi then struck a second large tree before coming to rest. A 21-year-old, female passenger had been in the back seat. She was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected during the crash. Sara Ghaffari-Nik, of 5455 Midship Court in Burke, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, Hossein Ghaffari-Nik, of the same address in Burke, was arrested and charged with DWI and manslaughter.

Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash which is still under investigation.

FYI, Hossein Ghaffari-Nik was getting his PHD degree in Electrical Engineering from GMU. Sara just graduated from GMU about a month ago.

Also, I don't know about you people, but I never put my seat belts when I seat in rear seats, and the main reason of this accident wasn't becuase of the DUI, it was mostly because of the driver was sleepy.

cause someone cut off someone in a pickuptruck there a week or two ago, and that driver died - so originally I thought this was same accident til I read a little further - that's why I was wondering if there was a pic of the driver (in a red car, I think) that killed the pickup truck dude...........

It does not matter what nationality, all that matters is that another innocent life was lost due to a tragic accident. She was loving, sweet and the pride and joy of her family and her brother. He will suffer from this mistake for the rest of his life. He loved her deeply. We all make mistakes in life, some just more drastic than others. I pray for the Ghaffari-Nik family during this terrible ordeal. They have a rough road ahead of them. For all of you with your smart ass comment, I truly believe that what goes around comes around!

With the non stop media blitz, DUI checkpoints, sober rides and the history of what happens when you drink and drive it is anything but a mistake.

Its too bad this happened but somewhat expected when one chooses to drink and drive.

The vehicle then spun and flipped onto the driver's side, striking another tree, according to Fairfax County Police.

Ghaffari-Nik was thrown from the car. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

I pray to God you do not equate his educational achievements to pardon drunk driving. You know being an old fart as I am I used to laugh and make excuses for friends that got caught DUI. But as I got older and saw the harm they did I lost that compassion.

Anyone who gets behind the wheel after drinking to excess is selfish and inconsiderate. What gives them the right to endanger the rest of us? You want to get drunk in a bar and make a fool out of yourself go right ahead. But take a cab home or have someone drive you. You cannot make any exucse for drunk driving, there is none.

Yet oddly, that other thread is more respectful. Why is that? Maybe because that other accident is simply an accident. The clown in this thread was DUI and killed his sister. People who get trashed here generally deserve it. Friends and family of asshats like Mr. Ghaddaffi-Bic should consider that before feigning outrage at the insensitivity on this website.

It can't happen to me. I don't drink and drive. The only way it could happen is if people like your family friend get in a car and kill me or one of my family all because asses like you make excuses for him.

Oh wait, he wasn't drunk, just sleepy and since he was getting his PhD, that makes it OK too. It's really only drunk driving if the person is uneducated. The logic on this board makes many of you look stupider than the stupidity to drink and drive in the first place.

What did I do or say? All I asked is that dumbasses don't drive drunk and kill me or my family and there are no excuses for his behavior. Now you are wishing and say I deserve death or that of one my kids (who are not even 5 years old). Who's being insensitive here?

By the way, I'm not stupid. I have my Master's Degree and since diplomas are being used as status symbols in this thread, that makes me so much better than you.

Well put. I'd also like to add that driving while texting and talking can be equally or more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. (Not excusing DWI, but most drunk drivers are at least attempting to get home safely; distracted drivers often aren't even looking at the road!)

Saras friends should nOt care about any of these negative posts say these people have issues with themselves. Sara loved her brother and he made a mistake that people make everyday except his consequence was the worst. They are lower than animals. Just focus on saras beautiful soul and how amazing she was. I just heard of the tragedy two days ago when my daughter, who used to be in the same high school of Lake Braddock in Burke with Sara, told me this. I barely know Sara but had once saw Sara performing her beautiful Persian dance at the school where held its 1st International Show back in 2005. I remembered her with very beautiful face/eyes and her most talented dance at the show. I was struck profoundly by the horrible tragedy and saddened... thinking of how sad this beautiful young girl's life cut so short and so abruptly at only 21 of her age, and only a month after her GMU graduation, and even sadder the tragedy was happened in early morning of July 4th, the National holiday of Independence celebration… oh, I've been sooooooo much in heartache whenever thinking of this terrible tragedy though she never knew me... here I want to show my deep condolence to the family who lost such beautiful sweet young daughter. Sara, may you rest in peace and may God be with you and your family for ever. Thinking of your parents, your brother and family/friends, may God bless them with much love and strength, especially your mother... my heart go out to the mother and the whole family. Life is so precious and in the meantime so vulnerable, let's pray for Sara and her family including her brother, show Sara’ family with love and support which they needed the most with such a great tragic loss.
