Happening now-fire on 66 W [7/5/2011]
Posted by: 66Blows ()

A truck carrying a load of hay overturned and caught fire on Interstate 66 westbound between Routes 123 and 50, according to traffic reporting services.

All westbound lanes are blocked, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Delays extend more than three miles, VDOT estimates.

Yes close down the entire highway because a hay truck is on fire. This should take FFX fire and police hours to clear up. Who cares if a major highway is closed for hours.

Right, block other unrelated traffic so that everyone knows that they are "working on it".

What you mean CERT no do nothing other CERT444. CERT living in area should make sure stay inside and windows closed so no one dies from smoke inhallation. CERt the reach us to take the extinguisher and fase the base of the fire and sweep back and forth. This is lesson that truck drivers should take CERT maybe road and fire could be puts out sooner. While CERT no go to scene. CERT person could have been driver and then had good CERT skills. That is CERTenly our roll in this. Alternative routs must be backed up I think too but no one reporting that. Keep your windows closed and make sure you do not take in outside air to the inside of your car through the vents system.

They've really outdone themselves on this one. I don't know why they are not spreading shit in the opposite side of traffic. And what about closing the beltway, that's with in ten mile or so? Should be able to a least a couple of lanes closed there.

After all it's almost 5 o'clock and the more roads closed at rush hour the better.

Update to Tractor Trailer Hay Fire: Westbound lanes are still blocked. Traffic is being diverted to exit 60 (VA-123). Delays extend to the Beltway, about 4.5 miles. Drivers should seek alternate routes (US-50, US-29). Cleanup estimates to open road are 1-2 hours additional.

Good advice Fairfax County, they suggest taking rt 50 or 29. A quick check of google maps tells us those roads are fucked as well. If they are going to suggest all of 66 westbound traffic take rt 50 and 29 then they need to adjust the traffic lights to get people through faster.

Gotta say, the logistics have been worked out well. They managed to get heavy equipment (and operators) as well as roll offs and dump trucks there to haul away the mess. Though I gotta wonder if they couldn't have just pushed it all off to the side and cleaned it up later tonight after they dislodged the traffic.

And its not even 5 pm yet when rush hour starts getting bad and all roads leading west are a parking lot. Except the Dulles Toll Road.

Looking at the traffic cameras I see people driving on the shoulders and driving in the median, turning around in the middle of 66. Exactly what we expect from Nova drivers.

i've watched from work periodically as they load a bunch of burned truck parts and hay into dump trucks and roll offs for 2.5 straight hours.

wtf? how can it possibly take that long?

quick way to clean up the hay, don't put the fire out. keep it from catching the woods on fire.

then as others have said, push the shit in the gully and clean it up tonight.

no need for accident investigation. just put the driver in jail for a week and give him a 10,000 fine.

Happened to me once on I-95 south while they landed a medivac chopper on the road. Basically everyone got out of their cars and sat on the guardrail chatting with each other. This was in the 1990's before anyone had smart phones though. I imagine these days you could just sit in your car and watch a movie.

You dumb mother fuckers.... That's sarcasm there in that post.

Of COURSE traffic can't sneak past in that lane.

66 has to be shut down.
A tractor trailer crashed
Completely loaded full of hay, that ignited.
It's 90+ degrees outside and these people have to be suited up in all that gear
(Thus the canteen for rehydration, otherwise one can pass out and then get transported to the hospital for an evaluation = more money than just having the fucking gatorades in a truck on the scene).

Push the burning hay off the side of the road to let traffic go by and THEN take care of it? Are you fucking kidding? Like traffic wouldn't be fucked up from your rubbernecking NOVA professional-fuckup-drivers? Maybe YOU should join the FD too so you can teach them how to do their jobs?

NEWSFLASH: Traffic accidents and tractor trailer fires are going to fuck up traffic. The fire department will never be able to make that go away.

The way you people complains is astounding.

No, I would say put the fire out first, then push it to the side. It looked like the fire was put out within an hour or so.

Yeah I bet traffic would still have been fucked from rubberneckers even if this idea had been done. But then no one would be blaming the Fire Department.

"it looked like the fire was put out"

You realize that there's also an investigation that needs completing, and that this has nothing to do with the fire department? It's just that fire trucks are most visible.

So you internet warrior neckbeards DO realize you're job involves TPS reports, right? Not firefighting? Traffic collision investigations? Maybe when the world is all pissed off that you didn't submit your weekly summary reports to your low-level-manager boss, then the firefighters, cops, troopers, tow truck drivers, and VDOT workers will come bashing down your door and demanding people get fired.

But you can rest assured that that won't happen. This is because no one gives a fuck about your meaningless hollow job that you have to drive 50 miles to get to.

Hope you had fun in traffic today while I had beer and got a blowjob.

Fucking losers.

Not everyone can afford 1+ million dollar homes inside the beltway. They live far because it's the only decent place to afford a single family home.

The real problem is the lack of new roads. upgrading 66 and 495 doesn't solve the problem. Lets take a lesson from LA and build more roads. Not just upgrading the ones we have. Another beltway, another 66, another I95 from dc to fburg. problem solved for awhile at least.

You calling CERt idiot do not make people more prepared in emergency. I say that everyone here seem like experet and is wrong. Firefighters are experts. Without CERT see where YOUR fire department would be. It is all us volunteers that make its message into community. That is why CERt is part of volunteer liasion office. CERT rocks and we are better prepared. You need to show volunteer liasions office and CERt some repsect. Because we honestly respect and are honored by what you do and you are the best in the world as proven by the firefighters that are part of USAR and all their brothers. Lets work together not against CERt and volunteers office. All for one and one for all. Doing best good for the most numbers of people. Thank you. And I mean we respect you, that is no juoke. We know you come with a few minutes to house fires and car fires and know your stuff. That is why some CERT become firefighters and EMS people because we know how good you are.

Love the attitude of "f off if you don't live in a firehouse and drive to work in non rush-hour hours."

Maybe if firefighters and police had to drive to and from work in rush hour, they'd have a different opinion of sitting in traffic for 4 hours when your kid is stuck at day care.

Accident investigation? Takes 4 hours? No way!

How come in all the big cities like New York, LA, Dallas, Chicago... etc they get roads cleared in under an hour???????? Yet in Fairfax County it takes hours and hours?

I guess your one of the few that likes traffic but for the other 5+ million people, I'm sure they want something done about it.

They have done some great things with rt28, 66 upgrades, interchange at gainsville, wilison bridge. But it doesn't matter, you need options, and until there is more then one highway to get from point A to point B. It will always be a problem.

Dallas Metro area is has roughly the same size population, but ranks 6 or 7 spots below DC for the worst traffic in the USA.. Why??? Because they have more freeways, and options.

Of course another beltway is going to cost a lot, It might be one of the biggest construction projects in DC history. But you got start somewhere.

I'm sure if you were living in Boston before the big Dig. you would have the same smart ass response. "Build a tunnel under the city, shit lets build 5" Ohh wait they did..

What the fuck is there to investigate? The truck's load caught on fire and burning hay went everywhere and fucked over the evening commute. What more do the insurance companies need?

As for roads, build the outer beltway! Upgrade Fairfax County Parkway to an interstate without traffic signals and we will be 50% of the way there. Maryland actually did something correctly by getting the Intercounty connector built.

Another useful project would be the Techway: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techway
495 from 270 to 66 would be so much better (and we wouldn't have all these troubles of people coming off the toll road and getting stuck at the end)

And none of this 55 mph shit. Rt 28 needs to be 65 mph and the Parkway needs to be 60 mph.

Not trolling....

We need a new law in place that places a heavy fine (maybe even a light jail sentence) for individuals that are deemed at-fault for these wrecks. There are too many people in this area now and events like these cause way too much hassle on the roads.

In the past, you'd hear of this stuff every now and then. Now it seems stuff like this is happening weekly. Enough. You cannot be shutting down 66 during rush hour.

I am sure sorry yall but I was looking for the exit to Haymarket. I wonder if the driver was related to that woman who turned over the truck filled with gunpowder at the mixing bowl about ten years ago. That had to be the worst the DC area has seen except maybe the retard who threatened to jump off the WW bridge and stopped 95 north and south for eight hours

Yea, I work near the AT&T building at 123 & Oakton and I took the back roads to get to W OX Rd while everyone was following their GPS telling them to take Germaintown to RT 50. HA - HA.

Seriously, this is the 2nd truckfire on RT 66 in the last month. How the hell does a truck catch on fire? According to WTOP, the hay caught on fire while it was being transported. But still I am preplexed...

How does hay catch fire?

Jesus Christ you'd be a dead (or at least cold) caveman

Bunch of dry hay (who would store hay wet?)
+
tons of oxygen (wind from the ~55mph of speed of travel, a literal fucking blowtorch)
+
Some NOVA asshole throwing their cigarette bud out the window "it's not a big deal"
-or-
Some heat from the breaks of the trailer perhaps? Ignition source isn't impossible or improbable.

Maybe if someone were to INVESTIGATE the crash, it could be prevented from happening again (cover the hay with tarps, or whatever)

O wait...all you self righteous fuck bags wanna do it complain about how long everyone takes to get out of YOUR way home to your hot pockets and masturbationthon.

Fuel+air+ignition = fire.

5th grade science you dumbass.

It's called spontaneous combustion and hay is famous for it. The wetter and/or greener it is, the more likely it will go up.

Virginia already has laws that say cover your load, this shit was probably blowing off all the way down 66 anyways.

Solution: Prohibit all farm loads that arent in a container or sealed trailer. That shit does not belong on the interstate, particularly an interstate feeding Washington DC. I would expect to see it on I-81 or on any road out in farm country, just as I would expect to be held up by a tractor driving down the road if I were driving on a road in Fluvanna County, VA.

I reiterate...

No need for an investigation. This shit burned up.. wasn't covered, etc..

Fine/jail the person and/or company associated with it.

Stop spending precious time digging through ashes looking for a cigarette butt in the hay. Who cares?? Anybody can sit an use the process of thought to imagine the possible ways this load could catch fire and come up with solutions to prevent that in the future.

The same goes for car crashes. How many statistics do we need to record to determine that people drink and drive, text and drive, don't maintain their cars, don't pay attention, drive to fast, don't wear seat belts, fail to yield, run stop signs, change lanes without signaling, etc?

If we want this type of behavior to change and preventable incidents of this nature to subside, we have to hit those responsible where it hurts the most.. the wallet. Then they will start paying attention and doing the right thing. We don't solve this problem by having the worlds largest supply of NTSB incident investigation reports.

I work over by Fairfax Hospital and live over by the government center, so this shit SUCKED for me. There was no road I could take in a general direction towards my home that wasn't a parking lot. I left at 4:45 yesterday from work, and didn't get home until 7:30. I was just trying to get across 123 and use the back roads between Vienna/Reston/Oakton to get home the long way around, like using Vale, etc. At one point not even halfway through the journey, I had to pee so bad that I stopped at Sunflower, that vegetarian restaurant across from Madison High School. Someone was in the women’s room, so I just used the men’s room. DESPERATION.

I saw at least two cars that had run out of gas in the middle of the road, which made traffic even fucking worse.

It was a complete cluster f of the county roads.

What's the name of the person who was in charge? Is that the Battlion Chief?

I'd like to follow up with a letter to the Board of Supervisors. This shit was ridiculous. A major highway COMPLETELY closed for 4hrs????

Next time try taking Rt 123 to Jermantown to Oakton Rd, Then take Oakton Rd to West OX Rd. Then West OX RD to Rt 50 which will dump you onto I66, Everytime I get on West Ox Rd it always saves me a bunch of time.

There needs to be a plan, for when they have to do huge detours like this, where they adjust signal timing to keep the main road moving and stopped less.

Agreed +2. It always seems like Fairfax county emergency personnel are like ants and misdirected. There should be cameras in place to monitor traffic lights and backups and a central command area that can adjust the lights.

God forbid if there was a real emergency like a major evacuation because of some gas cloud... half the county would be dead because of grid lock.

We must be over paying salaries if this the best that can be done. We could hire high school kids that could do the same or better.

I can't understand why the entrance ramp from Nutley Rd to 66 wasn't closed. They were letting cars onto 66 just so they could sit there for over 2 hours to get to 123. It just made the traffic that much worse. They could have at least diverted them to the Metro parking exit. Plenty of cops were sitting by there motorcycles doing nothing.

For all those who were critical of people posting complaints here, Consider this...

1). These are tax payers or the sons/daughters of tax payers. They have every right to complain about this ongoing crappy service by the county. Come on now, use some common sense. Clear the obstruction and get traffic rolling again.

2). What kind of desk jockey idiot agrees with the idea of blocking traffic for hours, especially going into a rush hour situation? Stupidity, outright Stupidity. The greater risk is this...That was a code "Orange" day coupled with the heat, plus being in traffic for hours = medical emergencies.

Fairfax County get it together!!!

"Clear the obstruction and get traffic rolling" sounds like you didn't see the accident pics. How exactly are authorities supposed to get frontloaders and other equipment to scoop up that stuff, after the fire is put out, with all the arterials gridlocked? What, you want that equipment airlifted? Maybe you'll take a massive tax hike to place a frontloader on the shoulder every two miles of highways in Fairfax County "just in case"?

Shit happens. You have a phone, you have a computer at work, you have a radio. It is SO EASY to get traffic info before you leave work. Unless your head is voluntarily a foot up your ass when you leave work you'll know something has happened and you should chill somewhere around your workplace a couple hours, go eat somewhere, do something and wait it out. It isn't like this happens every week, something that bad MIGHT happen once per year but I can't remember the last time the 66 corridor was screwed that badly.

There was no reason the charred hay couldn't have sat on the roadside for a few more hours. If I had been in charge, I would have put the fire out, shoved the ashes/hay as far right as possible, then reopened the three left lanes and kept the right lane/shoulder closed. Then, once traffic had calmed more (say around 9 PM) shut down the three right lanes and performed the cleanup. I would have also left a pumper truck or two on scene just in case the hay flared up again.

That would have been a reasonably logical plan. Unfortunately logic and Government are as far apart as the east is from the west.

It was a bunch of HAY! HAY... I can only imagine how long a chemical spill would have a major highway closed for in Fairfax county, probably weeks.

Maybe terrorists in Fairfax county should abandon other plans and just dump some hay on roads.

A major interstate closed for 4 hours because of hay on the road?????

At least open up two lanes after an hour. They could of used the left shoulder as one lane + left lane and still had 3 lanes and the right should to work in. Place two fire trucks around the work area and good to go.

You either weren't watching the traffic camera feed or are not being serious. The debris was across at least two lanes. How are you going to "shove" that over to the right? Using the force? To move tons of stuff off a road you need equipment.

> That would have been a reasonably logical plan.

Yes, if you are a moron that doesn't understand physics. Debris is massive, mass has weight because we have gravity here. To move heavy shit you need a heavy shit mover. Getting heavy shit movers to an area of highway when the area is gridlocked for miles takes time.

dude if you did watch the traffic feed, they had bobcats, backhoes, dump trucks, and roll off trailers out there... they did actually move the stuff, but they did it slowly by lifting pile after pile into dump trucks to haul off. they could have used less finesse, pushed it to the side quickly, and opened lanes no problem.

the debris wasn't in the road to begin with. they actually pulled it into the road to spread it out so they could ensure the fire was completely extinguished.

the reality is they definitely stuck to the better safe than sorry motto, but it seems they took it a little farther than necessary -- that's all.

Even with a phone or traffic reports having a major artery closed is going to have the county traffic grid locked. It doesn't matter what route your phone gives you.

Sit and chill? You must not have kids that are expected you to pick them up a daycare\school, get them to a soccer game or doctor appointment?

Of course, that's why you may have to stay elsewhere around your workplace. But if you pay attention to a traffic report you aren't discovering a problem after you are already stuck somewhere with no escape for hours.

That's what the phone part is for. You call ahead to the daycare place, say "I'll need extended day charges today" or call the doctor and say "can't make it, charge me if you have to but turn on the news".

Please identify the backhoes and bobcats in the 4:18p traffic feed pic above. That was two hours after the incident occurred, and debris was still across all lanes. Add to that timestamp the arrival of the equipment, discussion with personnel on where to safely put it, and then either shoving it over (without using the force) or dropping it in dump trucks. The fact that we see it mostly cleared in another shot less than two hours later isn't unreasonable given what had to be done, looking at the two pics as before-after events separated by 110 minutes.

Easy, they pull them out of the storage area off they have them near 123 and escort them with sirens through traffic. The smaller ones would have to be used instead of the larger units that the county uses for snow. They used to do this years ago when I was with the department.

There is a VDOT equipment yard at 66 and Fairfax County Parkway, about 3 miles straight west on 66. Since eastbound lanes were gridlocked as well, they could have easily driven a front loader or three (perhaps with a police car driving in front of it) directly down the shoulder to the scene with no problem.

From the pictures I saw from the traffic camera, there was a backhoe and 2 skid steers, none of which had the VDOT orange color, leading me to believe they were contractor's equipment. Maybe contractors can mobilize faster? But they would have had to drive through all the traffic to get there.

I suppose they saved money by having the equipment rented for less time by just cleaning it up right away rather than waiting.

As for "put a front end loader every 2 miles just in case" Well I have noticed Willow Springs Towing seems to stage a tow truck on 66 near the Beltway or Vienna Metro, i would presume this is "just in case" so they can get to a crash faster and open the road faster.

Having said that, it occurs to me that there is a large amount of construction equipment located in a temporary yard in the intersection of rt 123 and 66, perhaps this is where the front loaders came from

For the amount of money we pay in taxes and salaries to emergency personnel this was a complete traffic cluster f.

I don't see why after all these years there is no emergency plan to clear major roadways faster.

It seems the county, police and fire just kinda operate as "Oh well... close it until we can get our heads out of asses."

How about some standards like no major interstate closed for more than 1 hour. Then figure out the logistics of what that will take in different situations.

A heavy duty tow truck, two backhoes and large dump should take care of about 95% and be able to clear any scene in under an hour.

The issue isn't money, it's a matter of intelligence, common sense, and sadly politics. When I was in the department, I saw the transition in management from people who could think and made decisions. These days CYA is the golden rule. That is to say, everyone does everything by the book and no one, absolutely no one, will make a decision on the record. Everyone is afraid that they will lose their job if that decision is unpopular.

I wanted to add something to this conversation, some years ago when I was with the department, Disney was very interested in opening a park in Prince William County and had agreed to pay to upgrade the roads. Its too bad they didn't because now all that land that was allocated for the park has a large amount of townhouses. With that many new people in the area, and little or no improvements to 66 and the other arteries, its no wonder traffic gets bottlenecked everyday regardless of an accident.
