I know 5 Guys is cheaper, is Ray's worth the extra money?

Ray's offers 'fufu toppings' for their burgers and charge extra for those non-ordinary toppings and their burgers are larger, in my experience...
Though I'd would suggest visiting them during non-lunch hours..

If you are looking for a Good Ole Killer Burger, I'd just stick with 5 Guys.

Enjoy..

There's really no comparison, but most of my friends who like 5 Guys hate Ray's. I think Ray's is much better, but I eat at 5 Guys all the time because they are cheap and fast and about 3 minutes from my house. Ray's is a special treat. I usually get the fois gras.

Ray's is one of the better burgers you can eat. It's a silly comparison, unless you are short on time.

Also, Joe's Burger in McLean has some good "specialty" burgers and toppings. A little pricey though. They also have buffalo and lamb burgers. Their plain old burger is good too.

Joe's Burger in McLean, GREAT place but I dont think paying $70 for 2 burgers and fries is worth it. Do they get the meat from the butcher next door? If so can I walk in and buy that shit?

I won't spend a dime at Five Guys or Ray's because they both hire illegal
aliens. Ray's is even worse because Obama went there for lunch and they
actually served him. They should have thrown him out when he walked through
the door if they'd had a brain.

ray's, in my opinion, has better tasting beef. Another well cooked burger with some good flavor is over at Good Stuff.

What's with you people and Five Guys? You realize you can make the same damn thing at home in a skillet? My mom used to make me Five Guys when I was a kid...it's called a fucking HOUSE BURGER.

There is absolutely nothing unique or delicious about Five Guys.

How could you even compare the 2? Five guys is good in a pinch, Ray's is for when you want a bigger, fancier burger. Five guys uses crappier meat, 60/40, but they never freeze it, so they say. Five guys is owned by freemasons and is now a huge franchised national chain. Ray's uses the cuts of beef from the sister steak restaurant. When I want an awesome burger, I go to Ray's. When I want something cheap that's conveniently located, there's five guys.

actually the fries suck..thick, greasy...yuck
It amazes me how people around here rave over mediocre (and worse) food, like Olive Garden , Macaroni Grill and friggin burger joints.

My God, if people think there is actually any sort of cooking going on at an Olive Garden, or Applebee's, or other place like that needs to go into the kitchen and take a look. Those places are assembly lines where food is warmed and built, not cooked. Sauces, pastas, etc come prepackaged and only need to be heated.

As for the burgers, it's hard o make a good burger when you have to blast it on a flat-top, but Good Stuff does a pretty good one and Ray's, with their better quality meat, also does a good one. As for 5 Guys...over-rated....they are essentially McDonald's in strip malls...

The only reason we gave BGR a 2nd chance is because I had a gift card. Small burgers, mediocre fries, and $$ for what you get.

I don't get the appeal of 5 Guys, their burgers are average at best. The Burger Joint is ok, but you're talking up to $12 for a burger, about the same price range as Ray's. I like their Greek Burger made with lamb and feta cheese, but I'd take Ray's given the choice.

#1: WORST SIDE DISH IN AMERICA
Five Guys Fries (Large)
1,474 calories
71 g fat (14 g saturated)
213 mg sodium

If you ate one large order of these things every week for a year, you would take in more than 8 pounds of pure fat, all of it straight out of Five Guys’ deep fryer. What makes these fries so monumentally unhealthy? The portion—one order clocks in at a staggering 1.25 pounds. (And that doesn't include the extra fries they throw in the bag!) Your best bet is to downsize to a "regular" size and split them with a friend, or order the large and split it with five guys.

I knew I would get some forceful opinions, this is cracking me up yet informative. To answer the questions upthread, I have NOT been to BGR, primarily because it seems very overpriced and I have heard too many mixed reviews. I live in Fairfax and do love 5 Guys, but wanted to know if Ray's was worth the trip. I definitely do not think 5 Guys is the same as McDonalds, as a young child I could not stomach McDonalds and upon trying again 20 years later, it has only tasted worse as an adult. I really would not go to McDonalds for any reason.

Where is a BCR? McDonalds is good if you like taking a shit 20 minutes later and I wont argue about that.

Weirdly at McDonalds, for me, the quarter pound burger tastes like shit so I get the double quarter but am only able to eat half and yet it tastes a shit load better.

Ray's is good- especially the toppings- but the meat absolutely overwhelms the taste of anything else on that bun.

Except for the Danish blue cheese. That was pretty freakin' overwhelming.

Five Guys is good if you want a charred hockey puck served up by folks that should be frying pupusas and tortas.

People have odd ideas about what a "burger" is supposed to be. Some friends of mine opine that they don't want the kind of (good quality, freshly ground) meat that you find in restaurants such as Ray's. They want a very-well-done burger ("charred hockey puck") and simple toppings (ketchup). They are -- if you can believe this -- disgusted by a nice piece of meat that could have been a good steak, cooked medium or medium-rare, and are outraged at the price. Hence the dislike of Ray's and the bafflement.

Actually I think those guys like their steaks well-done, too, now that I recollect on it.

I have a theory, though, that what Five Guys sells is french fries. I have never heard anyone say they like Five Guys without immediately following it up with, "Awesome fries!" and drooling.

I don't generally eat french fries myself. The Five Guys ones are the greasiest nastiest ones I've ever seen, though!

I have three McDonalds within 1/4 mile on the street that I live on (Route 7), and then there is also a Five Guys right here. I eat at 5 Guys as an alternative to McDonalds. Same price range, and definitely better than a Quarter Pounder. It's fast junk food. (I can call in my order and it will be normally as fast as a drive-thru.) I'm a regular down at my Five Guys.

When I want a delicious high-quality burger, I make a trip to Ray's or BGR. I used to go to Fuddruckers a lot, but they have an anti-gun policy.

For something that's not as fancy as Ray's, but better than Five Guys, there's a Red Robin near me. Another place you might like is Elevation Burger. And if you look around, I think you'll find even more gourmet burger places -- I tried a little hole in the wall in Ballston that opened recently. Burgers are a national fad right now. It's being driven partly by low-end chains like Sonic and Five Guys, along with gourmet chains like BGR. Both kinds of places are popping up all over the place the past 18 months, especially in foodie cities. By the way, Ruby Tuesday makes a good burger, too!

Ok...I'm a little biased because i don't think anyone makes better hamburgers than me but here we go....

BRG - Way overpriced and not great
Ray's - better but still not GREAT
5 guys - Great for the price - feel like crap after eating though

#1 - By far the best burger is 'G Street Foods' - lunch spot on 17th and G St NW, and certainly not known for their burgers but everyone that gets one agrees....BEST BURGER!

BTW - i grind my own meat, make 6.8 oz patties (real loose) with salt/peper/EEOV, let meat rise to room temp, cook for 2 1/2 a side over hardwood lump and toss on two slices of cheap american cheese!

McDonalds: I can get a burger, fries and a drink for about $5.00
5 Guys: I can get only the burger for $5.00. with fries and a drink I'm spending $8.00.
Rays: I can get the $8.00 burger and drink water. Winner...

None of this matters in the impending Economic Implosion when the Chinese take over. They will feed their Americano slaves gruel and, if we're lucky, burnt Hay from I-66.

Elevation Burger, not good.

Fuddruckers, was good, now, not so much, but I do appreciate them toning down the decor.

Good Stuff, great fries and the toasted marshmallow shake is nice.

Clyde's in G-Town used to have a GREAT burger. The one by Verizon Center is close, but not quite as good.

Sign of the Whale had a good burger too......

Bobby's Burger Palace is coming to the area, but so far only College Park and Foggy Bottom....

Only been to Five Guys. I like it, but nothing to get over excited about. Rarely get fries with it, just a bacon cheesburger. TBH, a better burger is going to Harris Teeter and getting the Sweet Onion Cheddar burgers at the meat counter. Those things are awesome. I just found out I have an allery to onions (WTF?) but I can't not stop getting those things. They are really good.

5 guys is mediocre. Elevation is much better. Rays is more upscale, but they only serve burgers at Rays III since Rays Hellburger I and II are now closed. The only downside to Ray's is their bun....too much bread, then need a different bun.

Shake Shack is good. Spike's is awesome, especially the sunny side (cheese, egg and bacon!)

BGR is crap.

Wendy's has a far better-tasting burger.

Wendy's has far better-tasting french fries.

Five Guys is a pile of flavorless greasy crap and their burger patties fall apart.
