RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Lottery officials say someone in Herndon bought a Mega Millions ticket that matched all six numbers for the $107 million jackpot.

John Hagerty of the Virginia Lottery says in a press release that the winner has not yet claimed the prize. Officials said the ticket was sold at the Giant grocery store at 1228 Elden St.

Would be really sad if an illegal won - not eligible - would have to find someone to give the ticket to and hope they would return money back...good luck with that!

I never heard of that. Why would an illegal buy a ticket if they can't win?

I think to prevent a charge of racism the illegal would be allowed to keep the money. If they can fit fifteen people into a three bedroom home imagine how many they will squeeze into a ten room mansion. I hope the winner is illegal and moves right next door to some liberal in a McMansion.

I'm absolutely positive that MANY people buy lottery tickets with NO CLUE about the legalities behind them - for example, the Megamillions prize says "$107 million!" yet it was ACTUALLY "$68.1 million" (lump sum). And, of course, taxes come out of THAT amount and the tax hit (fed + state) is about 40.75% so you get to keep about 59.25% of that $68.1 million or about $40 million, plus or minus. 40 megabucks is nice but it sure ain't 107 megabucks! The "Official Rules", for some unknown reason, are NOT (in general) available online - you have to request them from the Virginia Lottery. There also are OTHER rules that are written into the Virginia Legal Code that, for example, say a "natural person" has to be the winner - this is unlike, say, Indiana where a Trust can be the winner - that, too, has tax ramifications. the online forms suggest a valid Social Security number is required (however, one of the online forms suggests a NONresident alien can win the prize so perhaps I'm wrong up there about an illegal being ineligible).

Unfortunately, I'm on the wrong PC to check the actual Official Rules and Virginia Code to check on illegal's status w.r.t. this.

WAITAMINUTE!

I was just looking over the Virginia Code and it says http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+58.1-4025

>>> "...no state or local taxes of any type whatsoever shall be imposed
>>> upon any prize awarded..."

which is a total shocker.

So I guess only the Fed hit of 35% is applied to the prize! Yow!

>>> "I'm absolutely positive that MANY people buy lottery tickets

Did you know you can win more than one top prize in the Decades of Dollars and Win For Life lotteries?

You bet one dollar in WFL, you can win one top prize. You bet TWO dollars on the same numbers, you can win TWO top prizes. Same thing for three, four and five dollars. Bet MORE than that, however, and you just win 5 top prizes (split equally between the number of tickets that won - your N plus whoever else bought the same numbers).

And with Decodes of Dollars you can win 2.5 top prizes, maximum. This particular lottery pays ya $250,000 per ticket for one or two identical tickets, but only half that amount for the third so the three tickets combined give you about $625,000 per year (for thirty years).

If you are the type to do ANY gambling whatsoever like at - gack! - a casino, the cost of a "single" such play is LESS than pocket change (6 bucks - LESS than most table minumims at a casino).

Has anyone won the top prize in the Decades of Dollars game? I won a free ticket once. Yay.

I heard that next year the Powerball is going to change to $2 per play with a minimum jackpot of $40 million.

If an illegal won this jackpot, I guarantee he/she will be on the next plane home.

Contrary to popular belief, these people aren't here because they want to be, they're here because there's no way to survive economically back home.

Do you think anybody would voluntarily stand on the street all day, in a place where they know they're hated, hoping somebody will pick them up and work their ass off for a few dollars?

they are here because they want to be here, even if it means having to "work their ass off for a few dollars," why? cause what we call few dollars is worth a shit ton of food back home.

an illegal ain't going home with $40 mil in the bank. why do you think he came to the US? cause it BLOWS back home!! only reason to go back is for family and all he has to do is dish out 10 grand a person to get them over stateside.

"If an illegal won this jackpot, I guarantee he/she will be on the next plane home"

You dont have a clue do you other than PC speak. They would NOT go back home. Why? Because with even a few thousand dollars they would be subject to the constant threats of robbery and kidnapping.
Their money would not be safe as the government would find a reason to take it and they would be left with nothing.

Instead of taking the next plane home they would use the money to bring up other assorted family members to the land of milk and honey.
Given the choice do you really think it is better to be a millionaire in El Salvador or the U S? If you have to think about that you have no idea what the real world is like.

Unlike you, I've spoken to many immigrants and most say they would return home in a heartbeat if they had the money. They are only here to make money to send home to their families.

You wouldn't know, but Central America is very beautiful place geographically. Tens of thousands of Americans have retired there, and I'm thinking about it myself. A social security check goes a LONG way down there.

Turn off Rush and do some traveling you stupid motherfucker, it'll expand your tiny mind.

Yes I too have spoken to illegals from El Salvador. I asked many do you ever get homesick and want to go back. The answer is always the same, you must have never been there to ask such a stupid question.

In their native country from one day to the next you never know who is in charge. Your home with 200 acres in El Salvador that you own today could be taken by the government tomorrow. The bank that holds your millions of dollars could be a hole in the ground the same day.

Its too bad some of you think in a PC way rather than what goes on in the real world. Stop reading handouts from La Raza and do your own thinking. Anyone who has even a few thousand dollars in that country is ripe for home invasion, kidnapping and robbery. Those with money have to hire private security forces to protect themselves.

One poster states how nice Central America is and how he will retire there. Yes its very nice but the natives do not live in those areas. They work there as servants or caretakers. You can hardly compare your retirement there to someone who works there yet lives in a barrio.

Last time I checked Herndon does have some people that aren't Hispanic
so the OP is assuming the winner is such. The winner hasn't been
announced yet so I wouldn't jump to conclusions. Wouldn't it be a hoot

FYI "Say" I have been to El Salvador, Panama, Belize and Mexico. No not the resort areas you are thinking about but the actual country in general. Your view is that of someone who stays in a four star resort and wonders why anyone would want to leave such a nice place. Well the tourists may think that way but the residents, i.e. your maid service workers, want to get the hell out.

Things you take for granted like turning on a faucet, making a phone call or depositing money in a bank that will be there tomorrow are alien to them.
They know in the U S they can get 24 hour health care, their bank deposits are secure, the police are relativley honest and what you own is yours to keep. Those things do not exsit in the above mentioned countries.

If you think an illegal that won that kind of money is going to return home then ask yourself would someone from Southeast DC be willing to stay in the projects once they win a million bucks. Please dont be so naive in life or you will find yourself constantly losing arguments.

Detroit thought it easier to bulldoze certain areas where maybe one person lived in a four block area. Otherwise they would have to provide services and maintain the streets for that one person. Not cost effective.

No, fuckface, like you, I'm not an authority on anything.

But unlike you, I'm fluent in Spanish (learned it in the military). Now, as a civilian, I'm around hispanics a lot in my business. They are usually very surprised when a fat gringo can BS with them in their own language.

You can believe what the fuck you want, but I do speak to a lot of hispanics and most say they would go home if they could.

so you have never been there and you depend on what a few people tell you. I have no doubt some would like to go home but they choose not to as long as their "home" is in a constant state of corruption and turmoil.

You are filled with what is referred to as white guilt. You see it alot in this area. That you should feel guilty we have a better life than a third world resident. I can tell by your profantiy you have alot of pent up anger, maybe you didnt do very well in life and now you hate anyone more successful than yourself.

They can give CERT the ticket and we can buy a truck to push the trailer in the parades we want to go to. The only thing the "border bunny wetbacks" like about this country is green and made of paper.

$107M lottery ticket sold in Herndon

Winning ticket for Mega Millions jackpot sold in Elden Street Giant Foods

by Kali Schumitz, Staff Writer More News

There might be a new millionaire in the Herndon area.

A ticket with the winning numbers for the $107 million Mega Millions jackpot drawing on July 1 was sold at the Giant Food store on Elden Street.

The winning numbers were 12-17-30-35-47. The Mega Ball number was 26.

As of press time, the winner had not come forward, which is typical in these cases, said Virginia Lottery spokesman John Hagerty.

“When we’re talking about a prize of this magnitude, it is a good idea for the winner to take some time and meet with finance professionals,” he said.

The winner has 180 days from the July 1 drawing to redeem the prize, which is the third-largest jackpot won by a Virginia Lottery player.

As a bonus for selling the winning ticket, the Giant store will receive $50,000 from the Virginia Lottery.

The bonus likely means a party for the store’s employees, said assistant front end manager Marsha Harvey. While joking that she would like to see some of the money herself, Harvey said it is exciting for the store to have sold a jackpot winner.

The store has a number of regular lottery players.

“I’m hoping that it’s somebody we know,” Harvey said.

Really object to the ghetto reference of Herndon. You obviously are ignorant and a snob.

No, the truth hurts. Herndon is the Barrio. Enjoy your liberal paradise amigo.

Did the lotto winner ever claim the prize? If not, wonder if it maybe a lost ticket?

It takes awhile to line up the correct attorneys and financial planners, then the plans themselves, when you're dealing with so much money. Just sitting down with the pertinent relatives and deciding things would take awhile, much less with outside-the-family experts.

Better to take your time NOW and get it right then to regret not having taken your times and possibly lost MILLIONS.

If you can't afford a home in Herndon, you can't afford to own a home anywhere else in NoVA.

It's a lot easier when you have 17 of your closest friends and family sharing the expenses.

Also, those attorney's have to figure out how to keep the winner safe from La Migra, who are going to want to talk to them...

McLean Man Wins $107M in VA Lottery After Buying Ticket in Herndon
Brian McCarthy purchased the winning lottery ticket at the Giant grocery store on Elden Street in Herndon in July.

Brian McCarthy's life changed when he decided to stop at the Giant grocery store on Elden Street in Herndon when he was stopping to get cash from an ATM.

After getting cash, the 25-year-old McLean resident saw the Virginia Lottery ticket machine next to the ATM and decided to spend a little money on lottery tickets, knowing the jackpot had hit more than $100 million.

The next day he was looking at Facebook on his phone when he saw a headline posted by WTOP that a winning lottery ticket worth $107 million had been sold in Herndon, he said. Once he saw that the ticket was sold at the same store he purchased one from he got out his wallet to dig for the ticket.

During a press conference on Wednesday, McCarthy said most of his family was away on vacation at the time and he was at home alone with his grandmother. When he told her about his winning ticket she responded with, "That's wonderful. You deserve it," and made him a grilled cheese sandwich, he said.

Rather than take the jackpot in 26 annual payments, McCarthy chose to take the cash option of $68.4 million. He said he was quiet about the win for three weeks after finding out, and soon left his job with a soft drink company. He said his splurge so far has been purchasing a custom BMW M3, and a golf trip to Ireland.

During the press conference McCarthy donated $25,000 each to two Herndon organizations, including Herndon-Reston FISH and the Herndon Optimist Club. He said, growing up in Herndon, he wanted to give back to the community.

The Giant grocery store that sold the ticket was awarded $50,000 by the Virginia Lottery. The $107 million jackpot is the third largest prize in Virginia Lottery history.

About $40 million after-tax cash - sweet - glad to see that a 25 year-old won - he and quite a few descendents are set for life.

[though I hope he got a financial planner/asset protection attorney involved - doesn't read like he did ... Gack! And he's driving a new BMW...Sue City!]

Actually McCarthy chose to take the cash option of $68.4 million. Not 40 million.

No, that's the PRE-tax amount - tax hit is about 40.75% or so making the ACTUAL in-the-pocket walk-away-and-say-thanks amount around $40 million.

$68.4 * .5925 = $40.527

I don't know if the woman on the right is a reporter or the kids mother or who, but it sure looks like she has the " I love you" eyes going for him.

Looks and sounds like a good dude winning this for once. Good luck to him, I hope he makes all of us proud.

The story would have been much better had a day labor mexican won. Can you imagine the party he would have thrown. It would have made the London riots look like a girl scout meeting.

Love to see Julio buy a huge mansion in McLean and park about a hundred cars on the lawn and let fifty illegals live there. Those stick up the ass liberals would be calling for tighter borders from now on.

I wish a Mexican had won it. Do you know why? So he could pay it all back to us for having to support him and the twenty members of his family crammed into his apartment in Herndon! God I hate it when I drive on Elden Street and those stupid Mexicans ride their bikes right into moving traffic.

I'm pretty sure it would be impossible for an illegal to claim a lottery prize. They probably would deport the winner if they attempted to claim.

Thank Goodness it was won by a WASP, porky double-chinned 25yr old son of a millionaire..

He was a 25-year-old who had money coming to him, whatever happened in life.

But for Brian McCarthy, son of the millionaire Marriott hotels president, his payday came much sooner than expected when he won $107 million on the Mega Millions lottery.

The son of hotels boss Robert McCarthy bought his winning ticket on a whim as he was withdrawing money from an ATM in inside a grocery store in Herndon, Virginia.
