Storage Unit Auctions?
Posted by: Interested.. ()

With the popularity of shows like Storage Wars and other rip-off shows, it got me thinking and highly interested in going to an auction like this. Does anyone know where I can find one within about a 20-30 mile radius of 22031? I have tried many sites but they are so vague and difficult to navigate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self_storage#Storage_auctions (if you never heard of this)

Any feedback would be appreciated. Any good ones local? Good stories?

Try www.auctionzip.com. Put in your zip code and it will give you all the auctions within a specified radius. This will include regular auctions as well as storage unit auctions.

I never even knew such things existed until these shows came out. Storage wars, auction hunters, storage hunters, etc, etc.

I know someone who use to work/live on site, at a storage facility. All you have to do is go into any of their office's and they will be able to tell you when the next auction is.

I ran one of these places for a few years. Those shows are full of shit, they only show the good stuff and I'm sure 90% of that crap is a setup. I knew a bunch of regulars that bought the units and owned shops. 90% of the time it was complete crap and some units would have decent antiques and furniture.
You need a place to get rid of that crap or you end up renting a space yourself and paying monthly rent!
We used to find tons of stuff people would just leave or throw in the dumpsters, made for some very profitable yard sales!

Oh, and usually if you call they'll give you the next date, most don't have set times. They'll wait until it's worth having an auction and the dates must be publicized in a local paper too.

Auction Hunters always say that It's 80/20 meaning 80% is junk, 20% is good stuff. Ya just got to take a chance

Keep dreaming, most losers that keep their stuff in a storage units and can't pay the bill don't have anything worth bidding on. That show is a farce. They probably film for hours and hours to find a storage unit with anything of value.

There used to be one on Sullyfield Circle in Chantilly on Friday nights but I haven't seen the signs up in a few months.

You can try this one, they offer a pretty comprehensive search engine on storage facilities in your nearby area. You can search by zip code or address, and they'll pull up a list of immediate storage facilities.

What could possibly go wrong? Because no one who works at a storage facility would go through the unit and take out the good stuff (porn, guns, whatever).

Because the glut of these kind of shows hasn't resulted in every piece of trash with $500 and a pickup truck from trying to "score" at one of these things. You'd probably have to overpay by quite a bit (other idiots will drive it up since they are also clueless) to get a room filled with junk. I'll give you a pickup bed full of junk for $200 if you want. Save some money.

I bet that the majority of worthwile shit comes from units that were rented by an elderly persons surviving family. Like great-grannies family shows up after she dies, bury her and fight over assets. The household items get put in storage, a year later, after any estate is settled, the unit is forgot by the surviving family and the unit goes for auction.

What is funny is how they calculate making money on the shows. Dave hester buys a unit full of 5000 books. He says Ill get $3 each for these, not a bad $15,000 day. pppppft. Do you know how long it would take to sell 5000 random, miscellaneous books?

Or old mattresses, refridgerators and especially power tools. 'Ohhhh, this is $3000 worth of tools....' Um, sure, maybe brand new.

The Storage War guys are playing with house money. They are paid several thousand for each episode (ever notice that they all got new trucks after the first season?). So they don't really care how much it cost, as long as they get camera time and keep the gravy train flowing.

Its just like the gold digging shows... The gold IS the show. The more idiotic they act, the more bullion they reap.

There are many such websites, online tools, shows where you can get auctions by just entering your zipcode or city or neighborhood across that city.

Here's an easy way to make money.

Rent a storage unit as cheap as you can. Don't ever pay any rent on it. After the 3 months of non-payment, they will put the contents up for auction. Take a bunch of empty boxes and write COMIC BOOKS and LIONEL TRAINS and FABERGE EGGS or whatever on them. Storage auction happens and morons salivate when they see the boxes and bid way more than the back rent was on your unit. Storage place cuts you a check for the remainder. FREE MONEY!
