I've done so 2x. Clifton is a quaint town and the atmosphere there is ok but the food really isn't that outstanding. Heart in Hand (across the way) isn't that great either. What are you looking for?

RESton Peace and I ate there on a Sunday night in late October. The place was absolutely empty; we had the entire second floor to ourselves for half the meal.

Anyway, I enjoyed my meal. The salad and dessert were particularly tasty. However, I hate to make a recommendation after only having eaten there once.

I have gone their many times. It is very nice.

In fact, for our 5th anniv. I reserved the entire top floor for my wife and I for an hour. Typically, we get this:

Chateaubriand Bouquetiere For Two

Grilled Center cut Tenderloin, Roasted Potato, Medley of Vegetables, Sauce BĂ©arnaise

I also recall a time when it was a run-down abandoned hotel

BTW- for whatever reason, the Clifton restos like to employ kids as wait staff (highschool/college). Not particularly bad for places like Cheesecake factory but when you're paying top $$, you want that something extra. At least I do.

Yes, the Hermitage is above average. However very pricey. There are a lot of younger people that work there as previous poster mentioned. Not as many as Heart & Hand though, which is a few notches below food wise but makes up for it other ways.

is the clifton store for sale? thats what i've heard. i hope the person who buys it doesnt plan too many changes

Yes, they are taking bids. My Dad works with a guy who put a bid on it for 2 million.

I haven't eaten at the Hermitage, but have eaten at Heart in Hand. I found it to be dreary and depressing and haven't gone back since. Sounds kind of like the Hermitage is the same way.

Don't know where you are coming from, but Foundation in downtown Manassas is pretty good.

Most private restaurants with investors are for sale the day they open. The rule of thumb in an independant place is to dump the place after four years, take your profit and start a new place. After four years most of the "new-ness" is gone and people get bored with the place.

$2 million sounds dirt cheap, assuming that includes the building, considering the Clifton area real estate.

The Clifton store is the establishment in question, not the Hermitage...

Interesting about the Clifton General Store. That family had owned it for quite some time but i've heard they're moving from the town of Clifton. I had heard initially that bids were in the ballpark of $1M - now SE has heard 2M from her father's friend. That is concerning because it leads you to believe the prospect of sale has attracted the interest of different "groups" of people who may have plans to turn the store into a more commercial business - versus retaining the small town charm the store has managed to hold onto for the past however many years.

I wish Mayor Peterson would buy it. He could supplement the revenues he is receiving from his new Ice Cream shop in town with income from the Clifton General Store.

I also wonder if the town could impose restrictions on what type of business can be put in place of the General Store. If I remember correctly, due to the location of the store, gas pumps are fortunately not an option. However, that would not prevent the possibility of some sort of "In & Out" type convenience store.

I'm curious to see how it pans out and who takes the reigns over. I'm also curious to how much the place makes in a year, taking into account historical yearly averages.

FWIW, there were gas pumps there through the late 80's

I think the store may have been a Texaco station

"FWIW, there were gas pumps there through the late 80's

I remember that. If i recall correctly they had to be removed because the underground tanks of gas were seeping into the town's water supply

The Texaco sign is still there.

The Clifton general store is a bad, bad place for a drunk to stop for another six-pack.

I live nearby and can't tell you how many times I've seen a cop putting somebody through the field sobriety tests.

I'm sure the Town wouldn't allow a modern joint like Davis there in town. I loved the old Davis General Store....bought many a roll of barbed wire in there!

I thought clifton had all kinds of rules about what look a store can have and what businesses are allowed, to protect the "quaintness" of it all...
