House addition is sticking out of the 495 sound barrier. Anyone know the story behind that?

I wish I did know, and hopefully someone on here will know. I am guessing that the homeowner is fighting a legal battle against the Commonwealth's attempt to exercise eminent domain over his property, and, in the meantime, with the HOT lane construction, they have built the planned sound barrier for 495, which, if completed (it is now missing the concrete wall in between the two adjacent I beam supports) will require the property owner to shear off the room that projects between the two I-beams.
You can see this just outside the outer loop of 495, just south of the Gallows Road interchange (as in, immediately south, you will have to look beside you or behind you if you are traveling on the outer loop).

The house is vacant and is slated to be torn down but seems to be used by construction crews in the meantime.

The house was in a row of houses purchased to make way for the HOT Lanes project. Amazingly few houses were affected in this major widening project.
It is being used as a construction office during construction and then will be torn down. It certainly does look interesting now, but the construction managers can look out their back window and see their project!
It's nice to see them finally starting the shift to the outer lanes. It's been an interesting two years (although I think they are doing a pretty good job of keeping traffic) while they replaced all the bridges along the route. With that done traffic will quickly show some major improvements in the next few months!

What road have you been driving on. They have done an abysmal job of keeping traffic moving. The only thing I would give them credit for is that I think they will finish it up, unlike the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project which they still haven't finished.

Right after the overpass, just alongside the ramp coming from Gallows to 495.

The house is yellow, easier to see from the northbound lanes than southbound. It's on the left just before Gallows Rd when you're traveling north.

The Commonwealth bought all the houses on that side of Luttrell Rd. The two in the photo are the only ones left standing.

Two house on Luttrel still standing were taken because they were to be too close to the Road. Both houses (including the one poking out from the Sound barrier, are used for offices for an egineering company working on the Hot Lanes.

One of the reasons I have not used the Beltway in six months, and may never use it again. I stick to back roads, and it takes me just as long -- or shorter - - to get to work/home. I cannot believe how my stress level has dropped.
There are some days with problems, and sometimes my route fails me. but usually I can keep moving. Satellite radio helps,

Thanks, Dave. Your photo almost does not do it justice, when viewed in real time. For all the world, it looked like some homeowner was trying to hold out against the "eminent domain" powers that the Connmonwealth holds against property owners.

I understand that the house is being used as a VDOT staging area. As soon as they are finished with the Gallows Road segment of 495, the house will come down and the wall will go up.

@spotter - cause we have zoning laws that dont permit houses to be halfway in the middle of exit ramps, that's why.

I don't get it. Looks like the barrier wall was knocked out so the homeowner could build an addition (unlikely) or that the barrier wall wasn't planned well and they will have to jut around the little addition part of the home (more likely) Or maybe the homewoner was asked to wither sacrifice the addtion or have the wall miss it (most likely)
Looks stupid to me and kind of crazy.

I LOVE THE HOUSE I WISH THERE WERE HOUSES POKING OUT THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE 495. HOUSES ARE SO COOL!!! I LOVE 495

HAHAHAHA THIS WAS MY FAMILY'S OLD HOUSE!!!!!
My father built this house and then we moved into it, about 3 years after living here, we got an envelope saying we had to move so that they could construct another highway or something. It was really sad, the house was absolutely beautiful. Now the house has been completely torn down but when that area was still sticking out (was the living room) we would pass by it on the highway and laugh.
Before it was torn down, it was used by the workers as an office.
I cant believe I found this forum, its hilarious, I just showed it to my parents and they were cracking up.
I have pictures of us in front of the house if you guys down believe me!
It's address was: 3411 Luttrell Road

That's fascinating. So is the house still currently there? If so, does anyone know when it's slated for demo?
