FAIRFAX COUNTY CRIME SOLVERS
News Release
Case # 1266
Release Date: March 29, 2010

Crime Solvers Seeks Information on Cold Case Homicide

Fairfax County Crime Solvers is still seeking the public’s assistance identifying the person responsible for a homicide that occurred 21 years ago. About 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 1989, 18-year-old Amy Baker was driving southbound on Interstate 95 near Backlick Road when her car experienced difficulties. Amy abandoned her blue 1970 Volkswagon Bug and walked up the exit ramp onto Backlick Road, toward the Exxon gas station. Detectives believe that her attacker confronted her on Backlick Road and forced her into the woods near the top of the exit ramp, where she was sexually assaulted and strangled. Her body, which was found two days later, was partially buried in some leaves.

Detectives continue to investigate her death and would like to speak with anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the attack, or who may have knowledge of the incident.

In addition to the $1,000 cash reward offered by Crime Solvers, a $26,000 private reward is also being offered for information which leads to an arrest and indictment in this case. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Solvers by phone at 1-866-411-TIPS(8477), e-mail at www.fairfaxcrimesolvers.org or text “TIP187” plus your message to CRIMES(274637). I've worked in that area for the past 7 years. Nice to know it's always been a complete ghetto, even back then. I'd never heard of this murder before. I did some further research on it and found that it was Amy Baker's own mother that found her body in the bushes after 2 days of not knowing what happened to her daughter. A tragic story that makes it that much more depressing to commute to this area every morning.

How was her mother able to find her body when the police back then didn't? Hmmmmmmmm...

"Sue Baker, Amy’s mother, started making hand-written posters that read, “Have You Seen Amy Baker?”

When a day passed with no word from police, she and Amy’s aunt Mary Bellett decided to look around the woods near I-95 themselves.

Tragically, it was Sue Baker who discovered her daughter’s body.
Over the years, leads have developed and suspects have been identified, but the case has not been solved."

I guess because the body was in the brush and half-way covered with leaves, the chopper couldn't see it from the air. But it is weird that if her car was broken down about a half mile away with the blinkers on that a sweep of the area wouldn't have her turned her up. I'm sure a police dog would have found it's way right to her. It's too bad, I can't imagine what kind of a nightmare-come-true that must be for a parent to find the body of their own kid.

I would have thought they would have had dogs and people on the ground doing the search. That's a pretty big thing to miss during an investigation.

I guess since she's only been missing for 2 days they'd only really just started looking.

Of course they may have had different procedures back then also.

Fairfax County Crime Solvers is still seeking the public’s assistance identifying the person responsible for a homicide that occurred 18 years ago. About 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29, 1989, 18-year-old Amy Baker was driving southbound on Interstate 95 near Backlick Road when her car experienced difficulties. They are particularly anxious to speak with Crime Solvers caller #6125, who called the tip line on Wednesday, April 3, 1996, with information on the case.

In addition to the $1000 cash reward offered by Crime Solvers, a $25,000 private reward is also being offered for information which leads to an arrest and indictment in this case.

Sir, you've lived here 7 years. This murder took place 22 years ago, long before MS-13 and all the other current undesirable elements moved in. It was NOT a ghetto then. Check the crime statistics before you run your mouth. You have no historical perspective.

Lorton is the rancid asshole of Northern Virginia, this is not breaking news. Make peace with it and don't take it out on me.

Has it caught eyes of authorities that this could be similar MO to a body (skeletal remains found near Wooded area near Sharpsburg Road in
Centreville 2 years later? Is it possible that this crime probably took place around the same time but remains were found later for the other victim. Both locations (for Baker and unknown woman) are about 20 miles apart, both wooded areas very close to parking and freeways.
Besides this, other women victims have been found dead in nearby areas in 10 mile radius--around similar timelines.
Simple maps need to plotted to find where bodies have been found. In addition a list of people who have been arrested for rape/murder in nearby states such as Maryland or North Carolina--since these sites are close to freeways.

That's interesting. I wonder how many active serial killers are in FFX county...

I am the aunt of Amy and the one that was with her mother when we found her. YES, the police screwed this up from the very start and they just wanted it to go away. It started when the State trooper towed her car off of the highway and stated on his report that nothing of value was found in her car when there were a lot of things of value in her car. That made the Fairfax police decide that she wasn't really missing that she had parked her car on I-95 and ran away. HUH? She had turned 18 a couple weeks before, the car belonged to her and she didn't need to "run" anywhere, all she would have to do is wave goodbye and go if she had wanted to leave but we couldn't make anyone see that. The helicopter looked for her when it went up for traffic, it dipped one way then the other and then went on down the road. I watched it. The day her mother, my sister-in-law, and I decided to search for her a female officer from Fairfax had told me she would meet us where we knew the car had been towed. No one showed so it was up to her mother and me to search. We started from where we knew the car had been towed and walked into the surrounding woods. It took us about a half hour to see what pure evil really is. I could write volumes about everything that has been done wrong in this case but I usually come off sounding like a cop hater when the truth is I'm not as I am married to a retired Fairfax County Officer who was active duty when this happened. He did say at the time he was embarrassed to say he was a part of that department when it came to Amy's case. BTW, his last name is not Bellett so don't bother looking for him under that name. I don't hide when it comes to Amy and if anyone wants to contact me please feel free to do so at Bellett777@wmconnect.com, please put Amy in the subject line, I will be glad to write you.

As a mother, this saddens me. I hope you find the killer.

Will the police give you access to the crime file?

Your best bet would be to reinterview the people they talked to--chances are they missed something--given the incompetence shown.

Maybe someone who was working at the gas station saw someone?

Chances are this murderer has killed again and is probably in jail.

Thank you for your concern and compassion about Amy. Her car broke down at 9:30 at night and it was dark outside at that time. It is believed she was walking to the gas station to call someone for help but never made it that far before being abducted. I had parked my car at the gas station the morning we started searching for her and you couldn't see the spot where we found her from there. However, since she broke down on I-95 I still find it hard to believe with all the traffic at that exit that no one saw her with anyone. We know she made it partway to the station before being abducted and Newington is always a busy interchange.

Since none of the original police officers that embarrassed themselves when it came to Amy's case are still active duty we always hope that someone that doesn't want to sweep this case under the rug because of the way it was handled will really delve into it and it will be solved. They have evidence but it has never been able to be linked to anyone.

Alittle more than three years ago, I learned a cruel lesson. If you care about someone you do not know and try to gain justice for that person who cannot do it for themselves, it will backfire and the authorities rightfully or not eye you as the suspect. About three years ago,I was searching the web for auto accident statistics involving pedestrians . Crimesolvers came up and I happened on the Cold Case of Amy Baker. The crime made me angry. She looked like a sweet, gentle girl I knew years ago and I owned the same type of vehicle. I met the group leader of crime solvers at a coffee shop in Alexandria and offered $1000. toward the effort and later another $3000 to boost the total to 30000 to lure some info.I had some 4X6 ft. professional posters made and my daughter and I went inside that cloverleaf on that drizzly cold March Day. I talked to people and businesses in the area. They had that check which was clearly donated to Amy for almost two months as I remember and it wasn't posted. One reply was, We're looking for the proper wording. We had a bad snow.Schools were open. The coordinator of Crime solvers was rude.I wanted publicity. One camera showed up-unidentified.I called another who didn't show. I wanted to contact the parents. His reply was , "people forget over time " and "your freaking me out". 1000$ never posted. H.M.

I might add that just this week , I was cleaning my files out at work and came across a folder I kept on Amy Baker. I opened it and remembered what the T.V. interviewer said. I turned around and called him. I had to leave a voicemail . -One thing I know is that you don't have children-a parent never forgets. I hope you were freaked out-Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.Good bye."There is a sobbing of the strong and pall upon the nation. But the people in their weeping bare the iron hand. Beware the people weeping when they bare the iron hand " Herman M.

Herman,

If Amy's parents were ever told of your efforts no one ever told me. The reward that is offered comes from an uncle of Amy's. I will be sure to tell Mark & Sue what you have just told me and to tell you the truth it doesn't surprise me. We got so frustrated trying to get the word out about the reward that I wrote a letter to the Washington Post and they published it in their Outlook section and titled it When Murder Meets with Apathy, we were told "No, thanks" when we asked to put reward fliers up in stores, we were not allowed to put them in rest areas, radio stations wouldn't broadcast it even if we paid for it because their viewers found that kind of thing too depressing. They didn't hesitate to broadcast that she had been found murdered but refused to broadcast there was a reward.

No, we never forget, my brother and sister in-law amaze me with their strength, they are my heroes. However, Amy's death has taken a hard toll on our family. My father didn't live too many years after the death of his only granddaughter. Amy's brother got as far away from the area as possible. Sue and I look at each other and see the pain in each others eyes because we know the evil that only we saw that day we found Amy. Just seeing each other reminds us of that day without a word being spoken, we don't see each other often. Whoever did this managed to kill a part of all of us.

I wish I had known of your effort and I Thank You so much for trying. Yes, people do forget and even expect us to be "over it" by now. The problem with this case is that there wouldn't have been any news about it at all if the police had their way. My father went to his grave wanting to find her killer and the rest of us will be searching until he is caught or until we die too.

I would have hoped by now they had found her do this to Amy and her family. I do know that she was a good kid. She was the first person not related to me to watch my newborn son. I would have thought that Fairfax County Police would have done the right thing and worked harder to find who murdered Amy, as her mother worked for a county contractor for towing and her father was a fire figther.

Please let Sue and Mark know that I do think and pray about them all.

Sheila....maybe the police have no leads to investigate. thats why it is called a cold case. that doesnt mean they have not tried to investigate a crime, if there is no new information what are they suppose to look into. its sad, but sometimes murderers are never captured. random murders are the most difficult to solve, and unfortunately some are never solved.

Had to have been some homeless guy who's DNA isn't on file probably. Terrible story, hopefully they get a break. People who do something this horrible usually are repeat offenders so at some point you hope they get his DNA.

I don't know if this is relevant or not but I have long heard that homeless live in makeshift camps inside of those interstate exit/enter loops where there is usually plenty of foliage. It seems certainly possible that it was a homeless or mentally deranged drifter who did this then fled. I'm really sorry for your loss.

as for the homeless person theory.................that really doesnt make any sense as most ppl who live in the woods tend to shy away from other ppl

I always thought her car broke down and someone driving by (I always stereotype a trucker in the scenario) took advantage of the situation by deciding to do evil.

I really want this case to be solved. I worked with a cousin of hers at a gas station like 10-12 years ago and I remember how this crime still affected him then. :(

For any investigators who might be reading this post, it might be worthwhile to run a DNA check again. The various DNA list has been updated and might be worth the effort to run the DNA sample from this case (as well as others). You might be pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Not much progress on this story, although I did find a newspaper article offering a $10,000 reward.

That was one of the first articles about the reward in the paper. The reward is now $26,000 with $25,000 of that being offered by a family member.

Wow... I feel so sorry for her family, I think not knowing what happened to her would be so heartbreaking obviously. it is so freaking frustrating when you watch a program about someone who went missing, and the person who did it won't say a word, case in point, The Boy in Abruba who killed the girl in his hotel room. We all know he killed Natalie Halloway. You would think since he is in jail for the rest of his life , He would give her family the closure they deserve. Same with this family, you don't want to turn yourself in fine!! But atleast make a anonymous call tell them where her body is!!!

I grew up in DC and ran in some of the same circles as Amy. Being the same age and just carefree kids her brutal murder and the details of her mom and aunt finding her was a shock. I have always thought about Amy and hoped that her murderer would be brought to justice. Although the case remains unsolved so far I am glad to see people are still talking about her case and I'm hopeful that her murder will be solved and that her family and loved ones will find some peace.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Solvers by phone at 1-866-411-TIPS(8477), e-mail atwww.fairfaxcrimesolvers.org or text “TIP187” plus your message to CRIMES(274637). This is the first time I have even heard about this.

I was away for my first year of college when this happened, but I can't believe I have never heard about this before. This really gives me chills, seeing her picture just makes me sad and bewildered. She reminds me of many girls I went to school with. I can't imagine what it would be like if this had happened to someone I knew.

I'm glad someone is bumping this thread from time to time. This is the first time I heard about it, so there are probably more than a few people who could have been passing by that night but have no idea anything so tragic ever happened. Maybe someday the right person will see this thread and remember seeing a person or a vehicle, and the killer can be identified.

It's shameful that this wasn't given more attention at the time.

did the police ever check her car to determine what the car trouble was? could someone have tampered with her car and followed her, waiting for it to break down?

regarding the idea of the killer being a homeless person that lived in the woods there, i would hope a police search would have turned up evidence of a camp. in the fall, when the leaves start to drop you can see some of these camps when coming off 95 onto dale blvd., so no doubt they exist.

Ok, so all this went down where the Parkway hits 95 - I went by there the other day and it's AMAZING how much sh*t has changed around there - not just the building growth and development, but entire roadways are realigned and head off in different directions than they used to.

Anybody remember how Backlick used to go across 95?

Yes, just like it is in the picture. I believe its been the same since the late 80's when this murder took place.

You are right. Backlick did go across 95 and we believe she was heading for the gas station on Backlick near the top of the ramp. The only businesses around that area at that time were the Newington motel and an Exxon station.

Twenty four years ago this month was the last time I saw my niece Amy alive and that was on her 18th birthday. Thirteen days later she was murdered and her killer has never been caught. They have suspects but I am given many reasons as to why nothing has been done to check them out. Budget, time, other cases, etc. I think we have waited long enough and it's time for Fairfax County to put Amy first for a change.

The police have suspects? Really? Who would these suspects be? How about there is no evidence to link these "suspects" to the crime? I am sorry for your familys not getting the closure they should but...posts like yours really does not help.

How about you go fuck yourself. Read what was written prior to my post. The family member stated the police have suspects but basicly are not doing anything about it. I asked who these suspects are and what evidence there is or more like the lack of evidence to link anybody to it. Then you need to read what I said in the middle of my post.

But how many post are on here from family members or friends claiming they have suspects or evidence but the police won't do anything. Or how many family or friends claimed a suicide was really a murder the police screwed up? An no I am not saying this case was a suicide.

If the police had any evidence that linked to any suspects I'm sure the cops would have done something with it by now instead of telling the family..sorry we have a budget issue...really...budget issues??? The police have gone anywhere to find and bring people back for trial.

BUT

My point was coming here to post the police have evidence or suspects but won't do anything to solve the case is crap. If the family has knowledge of suspects or evidence then lets hear what they have. Maybe us trolls here can solve it for them. We have all watched CSI so we know what we are doing.

And to close my rant..like I stated in my post above...I wish the shit bag would be found. The family does deserve closure.

The family knows more then you know or will ever know. We talk to the detectives and you watch CSI? This is not a TV show this is our lives. Yes they have suspects, I wouldn't say that just to stir up trouble. My husband is a retired officer from Fairfax County. I have spoken with the current detective handling Amy's case. He has just recently taken the case over so has a lot to catch up on but I had been promised by a previous detective that a man would be investigated and DNA taken. That detective retired suddenly when he was offered a job he couldn't say no to and he retired about 6 months before he had planned. I currently work for a search and rescue organization that also works cold cases. They solved 209 cases last year and I was a private investigator for 10 years. It would only cause havoc to give out the name of anyone suspected in any case until charges are placed. The detectives have all the names and we have been promised they will be checked out, the question is when.

I think to the answer, "When" is when "Hell freezes over". This murder happened back in 1989, how much longer does the family have to wait shithead? They pay taxes and deserve justice. No more waiting, that fat ass detective needs to waddle down to the file room and do the job he's paid for. They are entirely too relaxed in that office.

Hi Mary,

My Dad was friends with Mark and was a FFX County fireman. Amy and I used to play together when we were younger. I remember this case like it happened yesterday, and yes, Newington back in '89 was not a super safe place to be. Amy would have known that too, so it was truly an emergency for her to leave the safety of her car to find help.

My Dad told me a lot about the case and how you and Sue found Amy and the condition of her body. To this day, it still upsets him to talk about it. Amy and I were the exact same age, and her death really changed my cavalier "nothing could ever happen to me" attitude. I hope and pray that they catch the SOB that did this to her and give you and your family the peace and closure you need.

As others have said on this thread, I hope the authorities periodically run the DNA that was found at the scene through the national database. That's the only way I belive the case will be solved. This probably wasn't the first or the last time the killer committed a horific crime like this. DNA is solving crimes every day in this country.

I feel terrible for the family. That poor girl didn't deserve to die like that and I hope they catch the monster that did it. What a sad story.

Thank you Michele,

I believe we have met but I'm not sure. Our family does appreciate you and your family's support. Some people just think I am an overprotective nut case when I tell them these things can happen to them, I'm glad you understand it. It can happen to anyone.

The DNA tests that were done back in 1989 were totally different then even the DNA tests done a few years later and can't be compared to each other. From what I have been told there is still one lab that does the test that was done for Amy but you need a fresh sample from a suspect to run it. Also, back in 1989 it took massive amounts of any substance to run DNA and they didn't have the ability to reproduce it. With new techinques coming out all the time to discover DNA we are hoping they will find more and be able to run an up to date test to run in CODIS. I am told they are working on it but I am told a lot.....

I see. Well, I hope they are able to run a modern DNA test soon. Improvements will keep coming in that field and hopefully they'll be able to solve this case. I am very sorry for your loss.

This post is attn to Mary B:
I was in my freshman year of college in 88-89 and had hung out one night prior to the X-mas break with a friend and two girls he introduced me to. Some time later there was a "story" (it may have been just that) about about one of the two girls being killed off of some highway down in VA. There was some talk of the other girl knowing who did it so, I had never even assumed it wasn't solved, if there was even any truth to it.

Recently out of curiosity I tried to look up any info about this on the net and cannot find anything about it but, kept finding info about this case.

Now time has hazed the memory a bit but I do remember the girl's name was something like Mary, Jenni or maybe even Amy, all I remember was the name ended with an "i" or a "y". She was a slight petite little girl about our age at the time (like 18-19ish) with dark hair, not unlike the photo however the girl I remember had a much different hair style at the time. Her hair was very short (buzz-cut short) if you remember her having hair like this in the months prior to her death I may know something. If not, it may just after-all have been stories I heard all those years ago, people do talk.

If that's the case I whole-heartedly apologize for taking up your time and wish you most sincerely only the best of luck finding closure in this matter. I'll check back periodically for any response

Geez this summer I totalled my car and caused a huge backup on I-95 right at that offramp. Had no idea someone was murdered there.

It's an eerie place. I broke down there once as well and it felt very, very weird.

fuckoff

area was as nice as amy looks. and sprinfield mall wasn't threat to go to, in 1989

I've worked in that area for the past 7 years. Nice to know it's always been a complete ghetto, even back then.

i remember that face well but can't remember if i met her in HS years or saw it all on tv. so many girls were like amy back then. all beautiful and great dates and great to talk to and know.

what HS did she go to ?

was the ramp icy that night ? i heard a story about an altercation on the same ramp i think. but it was road rage after a caused crash.

obviously you check the gas station attendant. do a beat of asking around the area the days following looking for leads. ask the public if anyone saw two cars pulled over.

i have no idea why you think she was on her way to exxon rather than someone stopped "to help her", or on her way back from exxon

No, the ramp was not icy that night, in fact it was very warm for a March night, almost like spring. We do know she made it to the top of the ramp and everyone was checked out that worked close to the area that night. She never made it to the Exxon if she had she would have made a phone call for help and a call was never made. She had relatives that drove tow trucks she would have called. Not the first time she had broke down but in a different car, she knew who to call.

She went to Falls Church High School and Jeb Stuart High School.

Twenty-five-year-old murder still unsolved
After 25 years, Amy Baker’s family still hopes to find their daughter’s killer
http://www.fairfaxtimes.com/article/20140306/NEWS/140309602/1117/twenty-five-year-old-murder-still-unsolved&template=fairfaxTimes

On March 29, 1989, Sue Baker had a premonition that something was wrong.

It was 11 p.m. and her daughter Amy — who had just turned 18 less than two weeks earlier — had still not returned home.

“It was Easter week and she was coming back from visiting my sister and some of her friends in Falls Church,” she said. “She left there at 8:30 p.m. and it was not that long a drive.”

The Bakers had themselves moved only months before from Falls Church to the small community of Hartwood in Stafford County. “We wanted a larger home with some land, and to get away from the urban mess in Fairfax County,” said Amy’s father, Mark.

At both Falls Church and J.E.B. Stuart high schools, Amy had been known as an artist and an athlete.

She played field hockey, had a strong interest in photography, and had plans to attend art school in Savannah, Ga.

Sue Baker said that as she worried that fateful night, she tried to tell herself that her daughter was now 18 and that as a mother she had to start thinking of her that way, and not be so overly protective.

But when Amy failed to come home by 6 a.m., she said she knew something was terribly wrong.

“I started calling everyone,” she said. “I called hospitals, towing companies, relatives, and the police.”

Baker found out that her daughter’s car — a baby blue 1970 Volkswagen Beetle — had been discovered by the Virginia State Police with its flashers blinking sometime around 10 p.m. from the southbound side of Interstate 95 near Backlick Road in Springfield. It had been been considered abandoned and was subsequently towed away.

“I was beside myself, and I was trying to get the Fairfax County police to do something,” she said. “But because Amy was 18, they considered her an adult and proceeded accordingly. They asked us if she might be running away from something, and whether she might have abandoned her car. They later told us they had sent a patrol car to drive along the shoulder where her car had been, and that a helicopter had also taken a look, but no one saw anything suspicious.”

About 48 hours later — on Good Friday — Sue Baker and her sister-in-law Mary Bellett decided they would search the area themselves.

“A police officer was supposed to meet us at noon that day, but a suicide or something had called them away and no one ever showed up. We waited about 45 minutes and decided to just walk the area ourselves,” Baker said.

Less than 45 minutes later, the two women’s worst fears were confirmed.

“We were walking around inside the clover-leaf area of the exit ramp when I saw some bright colors among all the brown leaves and twigs,” said Bellett. “I saw blue and white — and then I saw Amy. I saw her, but my brain didn’t register what I was seeing until Sue put her hand on my shoulder and screamed. That sort of brought me back to reality.”

Unlike her sister-in-law, Sue Baker said she was immediately cognizant of the horror she was witnessing.

“I knew right away what I was seeing,” she said. “It was my daughter. She was covered in leaves, but I saw the new tennis shoes she had just gotten for her 18th birthday sticking out — and I knew. It was my daughter.”

Bellet said that in addition to the wave of sadness that washed over her, she also felt instant fear.

“I remember thinking, oh my God, the killer may still be in here with us,” she said.

The two women flagged down a passing ambulance, and within 20 minutes the area was cordoned off as a crime scene.

Police said Amy Baker’s vehicle had run out of gas and that she had taken the keys and some change and had likely tried to walk up the exit ramp to go to a nearby Exxon gas station when she was abducted, raped and then strangled to death.

“They found change in the pocket of her khaki shorts, and a coroner’s report estimated that it all happened within 30 minutes to an hour of when she left her car,” Baker said.

Although DNA evidence was taken, and suspects were tested over the years, there was never a positive match.

Subsequently, Amy’s rapist and killer has never been identified.

Fairfax County Police did not immediately return phone calls and emails seeking information on the case, but Mark Baker said he still hears from them from time to time.

“It’s considered a cold case, and we mostly hear when someone new gets transferred onto it, or off of it,” he said. “Sometimes we also hear from them on the anniversary of her death. We still hope for a DNA match as the databases become more populated. That hope is all we have.”

Even with that hope, the quarter of a century that has passed by since Amy’s death has done very little to quell the family’s heartbreak.

“Today, 25 years later, Sue and I can look at each other and still intensely feel the pain and the fear of that moment when we discovered Amy,” said Bellett.

Twenty-five years after Amy Baker was murdered near Backlick Road in Springfield, family members are still searching for clues that could bring her killer to justice.

NEARLY 25 years later, Sue Baker can picture her daughter’s body in the woods off Interstate 95 as if it were yesterday. She found it there on March 31, 1989, about 36 hours after Amy disappeared when her car ran out of gas near Backlick Road, south of the notorious former “mixing bowl.”

Two weeks earlier, on March 16, Amy had turned 18, and that makes March a particularly difficult month for Mark and Sue Baker of Stafford County. Then again no month—no year—goes by easily for the parents of a child who was brutally murdered, and whose case has never been solved.

“It’s hard to imagine her at 43,” Mark Baker said recently. “I still think of her at the same age she was the day she left our house. You wonder how her life would have transpired.”

Amy’s parents believe that the fact she was 18, rather than a juvenile, may be why her disappearance wasn’t immediately treated as a crime by police.

Amy had spent the last days of her life in Falls Church visiting her aunt, Mary Bellett. On Wednesday evening, March 29, she left for home after the rush hour traffic subsided. The powder-blue 1970 Volkswagen Beetle she was driving wasn’t perfect, but it was the first car she’d owned and it gave her the freedom she wanted, her parents recalled.

One of the issues was the unreliable gas gauge, and en route to her parents’ Stafford County home, the car ran out of gas and she pulled over on the shoulder of the Interstate. It was probably about 10 p.m. Having noted the abandoned vehicle over the course of the evening, a Virginia state trooper radioed to have it towed to an impound lot. That was at about 2:45 a.m.

Sue Baker awoke Thursday morning to realize Amy hadn’t arrived home, and immediately thought something terrible had happened. She called Bellett, her sister-in-law, to confirm Amy had left the night before. She then called the state police and learned that a car matching the description of Amy’s had been towed.

At the impound lot, Sue found Amy’s purse, billfold and backpack inside the car. The absence of her keys remains a mystery to this day. The Bakers think that the items left behind in the car should have suggested to police that a crime had been committed. After all, what woman leaves her disabled car without taking her purse and ID?

Sue Baker and Bellett put together a missing person poster and spent the rest of Thursday posting and distributing it in the Newington area.

By Friday morning, the women decided to be pro-active. They asked Fairfax police to have an officer meet them where the car had been abandoned. They waited, but the officer didn’t show. Impatient, they set off into the woods themselves.

A half-hour later, Sue Baker came upon Amy’s body, partly covered in leaves. An autopsy determined she had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

Investigators admit this is one of the most difficult crimes to solve—an opportunistic psychopath who sees his chance and then vanishes once the deed is done. This was no stalker, no careful planner.

Suspects and leads have been few, and all have led either to heartbreak or nowhere at all. One suspect was cleared when the DNA didn’t match. Another turned out to be in jail elsewhere at the time.

DOING WHAT THEY CAN

I sat down with Mark and Sue Baker recently for the third time in the past 18 years to talk with them about their loss and how life goes on under such circumstances. It can’t be easy, but they welcome the opportunity to talk about Amy and get her name and the details of the case out there for people to see.

Sue Baker came to work in The Free Lance–Star’s circulation department about 15 years ago, and our paths cross on occasion. We exchange hellos but I can see in her eyes where her thoughts immediately go. The last thing I want to do is to add to her anguish, but then I know her thoughts are never far from Amy anyway. She’s told me so.

Suppose there is a break in the case, however remote the chance?

“Her dad and I never stop hoping. But we want that more for Amy at this point than we do for ourselves,” she said. “There is no closure when you lose someone like that.”

Sue said it’s nice to know Amy isn’t forgotten. Amy’s friends post thoughts on Sue’s Facebook page. When the Bakers visit Amy’s grave, they still find remembrances left there around her birthday and at Christmas.

It’s especially sad for the Bakers when there is news about a child reported missing because they can identify with a family’s plight.

“When something like this happens, we know what they’re going through,” she said.

COLD CASE UNIT

Fairfax police Det. John Farrell is the cold case officer in charge of Amy’s case, and he acknowledges the frustration a case such as this brings to the family and to police. He would not speak specifically about this case, in particular about the condition or availability of DNA evidence that was recovered from the victim 25 years ago.

“At this point we can hope that someone reaches out about the case,” he said, and a story like this one could help if the right eyes come across it. “Relationships change—maybe a former girlfriend remembers someone whose behavior changed at the time or took a strong interest in the case. Maybe it will generate leads.”

A reward of $26,000 is offered for information leading to an arrest and indictment.

I was an acquaintance of Amy though friends of mine in 1988-1989. Her tragic death has always saddened me. A month ago, I saw a news report that they have named a person of interest in the abduction of the Lyon sisters in Montgomery County. In a Washington Post article last month, it mentioned this person traveled the east coast from the 70s-90s. For some reason, it struck me that perhaps this person could be of interest in Amy's case. According to the timeline in the Washington Post, this person was in South Caroline during the late 80s, in the early 90s he was apparently listed as being in the Woodbridge area. I hope the police in Fairfax are looking into any of all possibilities of these cases being related. My heart goes out to you and your family.

Curious if anybody ever looked into Edwin Earl (prisoner 1066640 Buckingham Correctional Facility, according to prisoner lookup). Both he and Amy were in the same English class in '86 or '87 at FCHS (hard to remember if it was 9th or 10th grade--I was in the same class but I had that same teacher another year for Psychology). Eddie was convicted of violently raping a 14 year old girl a year or so after graduation, and he and Amy knew each other at least somewhat since they had at least that class in common.

Just a thought.

Interesting, can you post a picture of him? (Then and now?) and the information on his profile from Buckingham Correctional please?

I don't have a picture, but it's very easy to get one out of the National Sex Offender Registry. He also should be in the FCHS yearbooks from 86 to 89.

www.nsopr.gov

Search in Virginia for Edwin A. Earl.

A search of old Washington Post and Fairfax Journal articles might also bring up some photos. I think his later crime was committed in '90 or '91.

WASHINGTON -- For the parents of Amy Baker, March is always a difficult month. March 16 was their daughter's birthday, and March was when her life was taken in 1989.

It's been 25 years, and still no one has been charged in her murder.

Amy would have been 43 years old this year.

Just days after disappearing, Baker's body was found off of I-95 South in Springfield, Va. She was 18 when she was killed.

The unsolved case still haunts her parents, who live in Stafford, Va. Baker had been visiting her aunt in Falls Church, Va., when on the evening of March 29, 1989, she drove home but never made it to Stafford.

Instead, her car was found abandoned near Backlick Road by Virginia State Police.

Despite a $27,000 reward, the person who raped and killed Baker has not been identified or caught.

Anyone with information is being urged to call Fairfax County Crime Solvers at 1- 866-411-TIPS / 1-866-411-8477. You don't have to give your name and you don't have to appear in court. Go here for more information.
