"Walking Stick Guy" on Popes Head - 1990s
Posted by: JBass ()

Does anybody remember the creepy walking stick guy, he sat in front of his house and sold walking sticks, he would also walk the roads and the shopping centers, with a walking stick.

Innocent enough, right? Nope. I remember they busted him with a pre/early teen boy living in a closet in his house.

Anybody else remember this?

Was he related to the crazy diaper guy in Herndon or the paper towel guy in Burke?

That was his brother who got arrested and sentenced to 40 years with no parole. The "stick man" ( sadly I don't remember his name) was a good guy at heart but had some alcohol/ substance/physiological issues. His mother sold their house not long after the trial and moved to the Stevens city area. " Stick man" stayed behind and lived in the old school house down the street for a while, but then followed her. Those were the good old days on Popes Head before the parkway when you could buy a walking stick or go across the street and buy rabbits and hubcaps.

Good intel but its still hard to believe that his bro could have a teen in a closet without his knowledge. I wonder why him and moms werent charged as accessories or whatever charge that should be.

There wasn't much of an article in the Post at the time. The kid was from California and met stickman's brother online. The kid ran away from home and local authorities traced the chat logs here. The police went by and questioned the brother and walked through the house and found nothing. They came back with a search warrant and found the kid under the stairs, he had apparently been there a few days and stayed hidden even when the brother was at work( he worked at Giant). The mother was an alcoholic and was out of it most of the time. I will look it up later too see if there is a newspaper story on it. I hate to post the family's name here but it can be found on the county's realestate page.

I remember the burke paper towel guy too!

Was the guy's name Roland? (Not the stick man, but the one who was busted). I think this is the same case I'm thinking of. It was one of the very first "lured a young boy over the internet" story to come out, before the internet was real big. Probably around 1995-1997. Roland was a tubby guy who worked at Another Universe (comic store, might have been called something else) in Fair Lakes (not Fair Oaks) shopping center.

YES! I think it was Roland Iliff.

On this page the article is truncted:

But in the links to Washington Post articles below, it mentions he lived on Popes Head.

So now that we know Walking Stick Guy's brother's name, who is the walking stick guy?

I still live off of popes head road in the nieghborhood right next to the bunnys and hub caps house. I remember growing up seeing those signs and not knowing what the hell to think. Also, one time there was an old man walking down the side of popes head right outside of that house wearing a snorkel, flippers, and huge goggles. I assumed he was from that wierd ass house. Its weird what things you remember from being a kid, this was when I was about 7 or 8.

I remember thinking, "Hey! One stop shopping! Hubcaps AND rabbits!"

There was a place off 123 around Hampton Road back in the 80s that also had a sign advertising that they sold rabbits. They also sold fruits and vegetables. I think the rabbits were 5 bucks.

The walking stick guy was his brother Eric. He didnt live in the house. The mother lived there but was never home. Roland stayed home to care for his grandmother who lived there because he was the only one there with her.

Just to clear up a few details.

Sorry I got the name wrong and I meant to mention that. He collected hub caps because the epilepsy had done a lot of damage.
