For you plane spotters - world's largest passenger jet arrives at Dulles today
Posted by: Biggus Dickus ()

The A-380 - the world's largest commercial passenger jet - makes its first in-service landing at Dulles today.

Air France flight #28.

Anyone know of good spots to watch this monster?

If you don't mind spending a few bucks, the Daily Parking Garage straight across from the Terminal is a pretty good spot.

I checked with a friend at United at IAD, they are expecting a north landing today. Probably 1L or 1R. Not sure what the procedures are on super-heavies. 1R used to be the de facto runway for 74s at IAD.

If you want to see it en route, drive to Reston or somewhere near the the Wegman's on 29. If you want to take a risk and bet on one runway or another - the Lowes Parking lot on 50 gives you a good angle for 1R.

The Sheetz on 50 is a good spot for 1L.

The other option would be to go to Udvar Hazy and get to the ATC tower.

It's funny how everyone is excited about seeing this thing land at Dulles now. How long until the people in South Riding are bitching about it flying overhead everyday?

Just based on runway lengths, I would have guessed 1C or 1R; 1L is a thousand 2,100 feet shorter.

EDIT: corrected runway length differential.

Forgot how far 1L/19R is from the main terminal. I think that distance and taxi time rules out 1L.

Too bad I'm working from home today, my office window looks out at the final approach for 1R.

Chantilly Costco would be a good spot for either 1L or 1R.

For you bikers out there, ride your bike over to Udvar-Hazy and hang out just south of the runway. It's sort of like Gravelly Point, but a bit farther.

We should have a south wind at that time so it should be departing from the North. 19L/R

But isn't that the point. Airlines are not really into makeing pretty planes that don't make money. The 747 still flyes because it makes money, Concord isn't because it didn't make money.

Concord didn't make money because it seated three people and cost a billion fucking dollars to fly.

The A380 is just an enormous passenger jet, made by a French company that is determined to put Boeing out of business.

My understanding is that Concorde was profitable but not tremendously profitable. It was very expensive to run and getting more expensive every day with parts becoming more scarce and with ever increasing depreciation and fuel burdens.

Concorde may have survived the Paris crash if BA and AF wanted, but most likely would have died in this recession.

Apparently the planes are customized to each airline. Some A380s are luxurious and have huge bar areas while other A380s are giant economy class planes that squeeze people in like cattle.

Yeah, because that can't change according to prevailing winds or anything like that. And runways certainly don't have two usable ends. Oh wait...

A big plane requires a big runway - prevailing winds out of the north so "1-something" - 1R is the longest:

FYI - runways are numbered according to compass direction the plane flies to land on it. I fthe wind is coming from the north then it is heading almost due south - that is, it is blowing toward 190 degrees. The opposite of that is almost due north or, in this case 10 degrees. Chop off that superfluous ending '0' and you get the runway number - "1". When there are parallel runways to handle lots of traffic (like at Dulles) the number is enhanced with a "L" or "R" to specify which one that's aligned 10/190... and sometimes (Chicago Ohare?) you can even have a third runway...not sure what it's letter designation is, though...

L = Left, R=Right, C=Center from the perspective as if your were going to land or take off on it.

C, for center. Dulles also has 1/19 L, R, and C.

For parallel runways beyond 3, they redesignate one or more of them with an offset number—so, for example, you'd have 1/19 L and R, then 2/20 L and R.

Apologies - I see that Dulles itself has the runways designated L, C, and R:

02938.gif

so I have no idea if the plane landed on 1C or 1R - my impression from long ago was that the 1R (which I thought was labeled something else) was for smaller planes...but that was long ago. My gut feeling thus would put the plane down on 1C...without checking anything else.

Probably about 4-ish miles due south of the runway touchdown point - Sully Station (route 50 is about 2 miles north and the runway about that north of 50). The plane a few hundred feet up - landing gear coming down in first photo.

BTW - after looking at relative locations I'm convinced that 1R is indeed the runway the plane landed on and that I, in general, seldom if ever see traffic for 1L but see considerable traffic for 1C.

Ditto. As Pinhead mentioned earlier in the thread, 1L/19R is quite a hike from the main terminal so it probably doesn't get used much for commercial passenger traffic.

Also, in terms of the A380, 1R/19L is also only 9,400 feet long (as opposed to 11,500 for 1R/19L and 1C/19C and 10,500 for 12/30), which may rule it out for super-heavy ops.

I saw the cop too. He was pretty kewl about it. Guy standing next to me was probably the first to see it - it was over Fair Lakes for the downwind approach. About 3 minutes later (right after an Austrian Airlines heavy (I think A340) everyone was looking south and saw this giant lumbering behemoth en route. We knew it was it, and then somebody with binoculars confirmed.

Big, big plane.

A 747-400 landed about 2 planes after and looked a fair amount smaller...

South Riding need not worry—Centreville's going to see the bulk of that bad boy's approaches (1C and 1R).

EDIT: I wouldn't be surprised if "South Riding bitching" had something to do with 1L being only 9,400 feet long.

Yes it was - a couple MUCH smaller jets came down the 1C landing path while I was waiting around for The Big One and I thought THEY were the one for which I was waiting because I could hear them so loudly.

Hell, the Emirates A380s have a fully functioning shower for F Class passengers.

Awesome photos skywatcher, thanks! I'd have to watch a couple of 747's, 777's, A-340's in early, mid-afternoon and compare to the A-380 to get a better impression of its size. I'll be out there by Udvar-Hazy later this summer for sure to get a good look.

When I used to work the ramp a few years ago, got to go inside the AF Concorde when it was parked after its final flight here - just before being moved into the U-H. Pretty tiny on the inside.

They turned out really well, didn't they?

I was handholding a Panasonic DMC-TZ5 that I got "free" with credit card "rewards" points a year or two ago. Had zoomed out fully (albeit not the 10X digital zoom) and took half a dozen photos or so from which these two were picked (*). Each image above is one quarter the size actually taken - reduced to not irritate Cary - but otherwise untouched/uncropped from as the camera saw them.

Anyway, I was surprised how clear these were since I was panning while standing on the hot street in bare feet and couldn't really see the display since I forgot my glasses and it was REALLY bright outside!

==========

(*) The unposted/deleted image where just the tip of the tail is peeking out from behind a tree is one I decided just wouldn't make the cut. BTW, I should have turned off the "review" part of the picture-taking so I could consecutively take faster pictures; unfortunately, the "review" part took up a considerable amount of time per picture in this literally-unique photo op.

Hold on there!

Wrong - not one quarter actual size, one SIXTEENTH actual size. I reduced EACH dimension as 25% of original...

You and Pinhead the Cenobite did a good job with the photos, think I'll use them for desktops.

+1 to each of you.

Sir you would be wrong, those things have been taking off from Dulles here for a while. They usually can be seen in the morning. The first time it was here was a couple years ago.

Wrong. There was a single "proving flight" in 2007, but regular scheduled service didn't begin until Monday, June 6th.

EDIT: Clarified that "Check Your Facts" was full of shit in saying that "those things have been taking off from Dulles here for a while."

Departing from 19L yesterday afternoon. I knew fairly well it would bank right past me where I was waiting along Stonecroft Blvd just north of Rt50. Much quieter than a 747 which will rumble my house even at +5000ft. Here the A380 was around 1000-1500ft. After seeing biz jets and regionals depart before it, in comparison it was monstrous when it appeared over the tree line. Kind of like when you see a full moon rising over the horizon.

That's right! I was there for that too, baby. Good crowd that day as well.

Way to correct that guy. What a bozo.
