I applied for a bus driver job. I have orientation next week. The lady told me that I will get paid for training. Is that true? After training ends can I quit my job as a bus driver and work at metro bus since pay is better

Probably, but you would want to do it the other way around - get the metro job, quit the other.

Be sure to read your contract/employment agreement first, of course - you might be required to reimburse training expenses if you don't stay employed a certain length of time (What!!!? You mean you didn't expect them to be wise to such tactics!?).

If you want to drive a MetroBus I wouldn't waste your time with FCPS bus training. I'm pretty sure that Metro also has paid training.

But yeah, it happens all the time, people take the paid school bus training, get their CDL and then immediately go drive for another employer. I'm sure FCPS doesn't like it but what can they do other than put you on the "Do Not Rehire" list.

Metro has a big waiting period. In the mean time I will work for FCPS but once WMATA hires me I would give them my 2 week notice.

You first will have to pass the DMV's CDL & airbrakes test.
The County will go over the CDL books with you & you get paid for the four weeks of orientation.
If you don't pass the CDL test, you don't get to continue with the class.
You also have to pass a mandatory drug test.

The CDL provision on your drivers' licence is only valid if you are driving for Fairfax County.
So, when your training ends- if you choose not to work for FC, you will have the CDL rider revoked off your lic.

Though I'm just sitting here reading this thread with almost literally no personal knowledge of such things, I simply cannot believe this.

As a bus driver myself, I would recomend you go through the training, and get on board with the county, then apply to Metro. Metro will have you come in to take a series of tests, then you have to wait about 2 weeks for the results to be posted on their web site. If you pass then you go on to the next phase. If not, you can't re-apply again for 6 months.

In the mean-time, you still have a job.

CDL is not revoked from liscense...when you go to DMV you can opt to pay an additional fee to drive any and all CDL/if you do not pay this fee...you are then only liscensed w/FCPS

It is called a "fee waiver". DMV issues the CDL free but they put a restriction on it that states the license "Valid only in County-owned vehicles".

FCPS will not release you from training until you show them that your CDL has this restriction on it, which is completely stupid because you can go right back to DMV, pay the license fee, and have the restriction removed.

I went for the free license for years (CDLs are pricey) until I started driving dump trucks (not owned by the County) in the summer.

Are you a FCPS driver? If so, that's bullshit although I can easily believe that they may have told you that.

We've had seven new drivers this year at my school and four have quit already. FCPS Transportation has tremendous turnover with all the games they try to play with people. Plus in most cases, going after former drivers for training fees would be like getting blood out of a turnip.

You are already on the internet dumb ass. Look it up. If you are that stupid I do not want you driving a bus regardless of how many years you have had a license.

NO. You can still drive a school bus in any county in Virginia, but just a school bus.

There is a special condition about a CDL for driving a school bus - The bus driven must transport students to and from school or actual school activities.

The driving of any other bus is not considered a school bus unless is it a contracted carrier, and sanctioned by a school system or governing body.

I knew a guy that retired from a banking job. Saw the signs tha FCPS needed bus drivers so signed up, did the training, got his CDL and the very first day the kids were so fucking bad, he pulled the bus over to the side of the road and told them he wasn't driving anymore until they calmed down. They started cussing at him calling him names, etc. so he got on the radio and told the supervisor to send another driving be cause he was quitting. Turned the engine off got off the bus and walked away! These were middle school kids.

True story!

Going to work for Metro as a driver, great idea. You could end up working a night shift in SE DC. If you are lucky you can get a passenger who pisses in a cup and throws it on you.

I have been driving a bus for WMATA for seven years. It is a great job with great benefits. Depending on the route, you may have to deal with undesirable people at times. Personally, I like this aspect of the job because I am a bit of a hothead.

I drive the W8 route which takes me through Anacostia. Have seen some crazy shit, let me tell you. Just carry a handgun and you will be ok. Sure, it's not necessarily legal in DC and Maryland, but police turn the other way for WMATA employees who carry firearms. Haven't had to use it yet, but I pull it out about three or four times a month.

I have a degree in History (focus on ancient Sumer) from Princeton and could probably get a decent office job, but I wouldn't trade this job for anything.

Mohammad, more than half the drivers in my training class with FCPS failed to get through the training. I wouldn't start counting my chickens just yet.

...You will be kicked out if they find this out before you finish... and you will be put on a DO NOT REHIRE list... so when you find out metro is not all you hoped for there will be no going back to the county....another great immigrant cheating the system
