Is the WO&D trail closed at night?
Posted by: Trail User ()

I can't find a source....
This made me wonder...
http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/40/590152.html

The sun sets at different hours throughout the year. This forces cyclists to user the road otherwise, which we all agree is pretty stupid thing to do. Who decides whether this trail is closed? Under what law or statute can it be enforced under?

The trail is open only during daylight hours.

You can't find a source? The article you linked states:

"The W&OD trail is closed after dark for safety. Anyone on the trail after dark is considered to be trespassing. "

I have never seen signs that indicate that the trail is closed.

Same time, it's a major commuter pathway.... So do we really want cyclists on the roadway (because the trail is closed) at night then?

DOes this logic flow with anyone elsE?

A newsarticle isn't a source. It's media.
I want an authority's decree.

Horses, then pedestrians, receive the right-of-way unless otherwise posted.
Move slowly when the trail is congested or when passing.
Always look ahead for obstacles such as gates potholes and other trail users, etc.
Obey traffic signs.
Do not use the trail after dark.
Avoid areas that may offer concealment to potential assailants.
Cross roads only at designated crossings; look both ways before crossing.
Do not use headphones at a high volume.

That's a Loundoun County article.

Is that a recommendation or a law? It's recommended that I look both ways before I cross the street, but it's not a law. If I get hit when I cross, it's my problem.

It's under "Rules." You figure it out.

EDIT: It's posted on the signs at the trail. As I understand it, that means you can be cited for trespassing if you're there after dark.

Not so fast. It's under "Rules & Safety" THEN under "Be AWare." Not necessarily a rule.

it's kinda common sense seeing as the trail isnt lit or anything

when have you EVER been to a park without lights that allows you to be there after dusk?

it's a liability issue, plain and simple

True. Personally, I'd never go on the trail after dark. I'm just now curious if it's indeed against the law to walk on the trail at night. There are signs within parks that say "Closed as Dusk." I take that as closing hours, anything after is indeed trespassing. Are those same signs somewhere on the trail?

waitamin, the W&OD trail isn't a Fairfax County park. It is part of the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, a multi-jurisdiction part authority which includes Loudoun and Fairfax. The W&OD park runs through both jurisdictions as well. Understanding this would perhaps have made it easier for you to understand that even though the original information comes from Loudoun the same rules would apply to the Fairfax County portion of the same park.

I dont see so much of a danger issue here.
Ya it's dark but there are tons of bicycle headlights available to mitigate this.

Still would be safer to bike on that trail at night than the roads that parallel it.

By this law, cyclists would turn to motorists and traffic would increase during seasons where rush hour coincided with darkness.

Do we really want more cars (or bikes) on the roads during darktime rush hours?

I've been on the trail plenty of times at night on my bike, including times when cop cars have driven down the trail, and no one has ever said anything to me.

Ergo I can only conclude that white people on expensive bikes are allowed to be on the W&OD after dark QED

The Reston trails are full of rape, murder, arson, and rape - even in daylight.

I wouldn't be on the W&OD or Reston trails after dark not because of some unenforced law, but because they're unsafe.

According to the sheriff's office, around 12:41 p.m., Sunday, May 22, a 61-year-old Leesburg woman was riding with a friend on the W&OD Trail when they stopped in the area of mile marker 22 in Sterling. During this time an unknown male walked up to the woman and grabbed her from behind. After the woman screamed, the suspect fled on foot.

I am not sure why anybody would do this. The trail is very isolated in many areas - thick undergrowth for hiding and laying in wait. Long distances and terrain where few people would hear you scream.

Why would you want to take the trail after dark? Maybe you got a deathwish? Maybe you'd go there after dark for some Charles Bronson action. Vigilante time.

How do they close the trail? It would be hilarious if they put up chains to close the trails at night to catch some of these hotshit bikers that like to race in the dark.

By the way, I gotta ask. Anyone ever notice the crazy house on the trail between Gallows and Cedar Lane (near Dunn Loring)...on the left as you are traveling toward Gallows? It's got an unfinished pool and a ton of crazy ass items on display. Almost like the back lot for Sanford and Son.

The W&OD is lit in Arlington and is open at night there. Once you cross into Fairfax, there are no more lights, and it's officially closed at night. The police seem to have better things to do than hassle bike commuters at night though. The only hazards I've run into at night are the occasional deer that think they own the place.

That junk house is one of my favorite sights on the trail, especially now that Midgetville is all torn down.

@Gordon - True, the first one happened on a Sunday afternoon. I believe that it is a safe assumption that it gets more unsafe at night... but the pickins aren't as good :)

The bike trails in Reston are seeing crime in daylight and nighttime now. I only use them during busy daylight times because I usually have my kid with me.

I don't know all the laws. Do they allow people to carry pepper spray around here? I think I can go get my concealed carry permit, but it seems carrying a gun would be a hassle on a bike ride. Time to fire up the Google.

@wnrsm nah, the bike trails are way more safe at night :)

ok, yeah, a safe assumption. And yes, you can carry pepper spray, or any non-lethal defense weapon on yr person - the only crime would be if you used it in a offensive manner against someone not attacking you.

And listen - if you do get a weapon, lethal or non-lethal - LEARN HOW TO USE IT! What I mean is practice using it. Lotsa ppl think they are safe with pepper spray - but never get the chance to use it, or worse, have it used against them when they are disarmed - see what I'm saying?

i came here more curious about a non-lethal weapon carry on the trail. as far as after dark, im on there all the time, as are many riders. loudon to arlington. if you take a good look at that state law, it states "unless using a lighted facility..." there are many lighted facilities along the trail and be smart, carry your own lights/bike-mounted lights. the park rules are definitely recommendations for a safe trip. ride with a friend, always? yeah right. i commute.

I ride my bike at night - with the light on - often on the trail. Other cyclists do also, and occasionally I see a pair of horse riders at night. I would not say it's a busy place at night, but there is certainly plenty of activity, including teen romance. No one has ever stopped me to say the park was closed.
