No ac at FCPs schools

Braddock elementary school has no ac today! The ac is broken and they are expecting 5th graders to take an sol at 85 degree weather in the classroom at 9am. Nice going jack Dale

No A/C is Dale's fault? Is it hard taking tests in the heat? Sure. But they will be fine. It's an older school. Things happen. Power was out in that area over the weekend. While Dale is very much out of touch with the county, to place blame is irresponsible, but expected nowadays.

We are quickly becoming "softer" as a society with each passing day.

Nice.

Bullshit, I saw Jack Dale up on the roof of Braddock ES yesterday. He had a pickax in his hand and was swinging it at the condensers.

I grew up in the NYC school system, and we never had any A/C. We just sucked it up. No one collapsed or died or anything. Maybe if these childrens' parents would get them out of the house to play instead of staying inside on the computer, the Wii, or the TV, they would be acclimitized to the heat. And not be overweight with a diagnosis of high blood pressure or adult onset diabetes at 9-10 years old. A day or two of no A/C isn't going to kill anybody.

Echoing the above, the fact that NY has an average summer temperature high that is several degrees lower than Fairfax County's should have no bearing at all on the discussion about A/C. They clearly are showing us how to handle the issue.

I went to a school system in the midwest that didn't even have air
conditioning. We opened the windows and if it got too hot we'd go outside
and have our classes under the trees. Our school year ended a couple of
days before Memorial Day and there wasn't much need for ac but here
I am alive to tell about it. One thing I'll always remember though is
without fail the last week of school was complete bullshit and all we
really did was attend functions so the faculty could tell us what a great
year it was and how wonderful it's going to be next year. Rah Rah....

Another idiot from the north talking about how tough the northerner's are and how much better they handle bad weather issues. Sounds similar to all the 'oh you got a bit of winter weather? So you're CLOSED for two days?' Yeah, cause we'd get a shitload of ice and when the north finally got ice storms they ALL shut down just like Washington does. If NY and the other areas had our heat and humidity and lack of air movement they'd have the same issues. Get over yourself already. High heat can and does kill. And little kids are more susceptible to heatstroke faster, even if they are fit and trim and play outside everyday for hours.

Grow up and do some real research before you say something as asinine as "A day or two of no A/C isn't going to kill anybody" Because, actually, yes, yes it can and it has.

Once upon a time, I taught in Florida in an UNAIRCONDITIONED school. However, we had long tall windows (it was a very old school) and transoms over the door to encourage breezes. We also had HUGE fans and high ceilings. It was still miserable when it was hot and humid. The children fell asleep or had short tempers. Many days were awful.

Many of FCPS schools have neither windows nor fans in the classrooms. Without airconditioning, teaching and testing would be close to impossible. Did you hear how many people had heat stroke in DC yesterday?

That said, isn't this part of Tisdadt's job as Facilities? It seems to me that the air should have been checked out before today........

@ East County, we also walked uphill both ways to school in all that snow

@ shadow, we do get heat waves in NYC. We may not have a week or two of +90 weather, but we do get those days. We opened up the johnny pumps and put a sprinkler cap on if it got too hot. We all played outside since it was even hotter in the apartment. No one went to the hospital. If we got too hot, we found some shade or went home for some ice water or something. That was in the 70's and the 80's.

So, what did people do in the early to mid 1900's before we had widely available air conditioning? I'm guessing fans? We didn't even own an A/C until I was a senior in H.S.

It may get warmer a little earlier, and it may take a few extra weeks to get cold, but the temperatures in Fairfax and NYC aren't all that different. You get more variance in the spring and fall months (for example, Queens is at 84 right now), but the summer and winter aren't too much different. You make it out like Fairfax is next to Orlando, and NYC is down the road from Quebec or something.

People from "up north": there is a big difference. I grew up in Wisconsin. Yes, it got hot. Yes, we had no A/C. BUT it cooled down at night and so we got relief at night and early morning. The trick was to open all windows at night and use window fans to pull in and move the cool air through the house. Some people used attic fans to do the same thing (pull the air up through the house). Then you closed the windows in the morning and pulled the drapes. You could keep it cool until around noon or 1 p.m. By 3 p.m. it was stinking hot again, but you had the night to look forward to.

I was utterly shocked upon moving here and finding a low of 80!! at night. Horrible. No relief. Before A/C, this place slowed WAY DOWN in the summer.

Now I do know that they have had "global warming" up there in recent years and there is much more A/C all over.

I attended FCPS from '57 through '69 and I don't remember any fucking air conditioning. They had big windows that swung out and I think if it was really hot, they'd bring in a huge pedestal fan that blew all the shit off your desk.

The exception was in 1968, I went to summer school and they held it at the brand new West Springfield High School because it was air-conditioned. WSHS was the first, or one of the first schools with A/C.

But yeah, if the A/C quits at the new or renovated schools with non-opening windows you gotta get the fuck outta there.

You're still missing the point. These kids can't go running through some sprinkler or anything. They're sitting in closed classrooms without any airflow. How productive do you think they're going to be in this heat? And no one's going home for some ice water in the middle of class, though I suppose they might go get some of the hot water on one of the fountains in school, not that I'd recommend it.

And before A/C existed, school ended before noon and wasn't crammed into dozens of crowded windowless rooms for 6-7 hours a day through the heat of the day.

Yeah, things were different when we were kids but we also didn't know about every awful thing that happened all over the world every day like kids today. Kids today deal with different shit than we ever had to. But in the end, shit is shit.

I grew up 8 hrs south of here, and you guessed it, no A/C in the schools until HS. We simply slowed down when it got hot. we certainly didn't have SOLs to worry about. We just stayed cool.

We also weren't crammed to the gills in overcrowded classrooms. Seriously, how many of you posters have visited a classroom in session? It's obnoxious.

I also seem to recall that the classrooms had large windows then that opened, and each classroom had one or two fans in them, running constantly. Many schools today have small opening windows or windows that don't open at all. And when was the last time you saw a decent sized fan in a classroom.

When I first started teaching in FCPS, a long time ago, there was no AC in most schools. I'd try and do the most important stuff first thing in the morning, by midday the rooms were so warm it was impossible to get students to do much. So, we'd open all the windows, turn on a fan, turn the lights out and do something mellow. I'd read to them, this was in elementary school, or give them a map to color or something like that. Seriously, there wasn't that much you could do about it. And, I don't recall ever having an early closing because of the heat.

One of the porblems is that the buildings are poorly insulated and heat up quickly. As old as I am we never had AC in our house until several years after I got out of school.

Overall, with the heat and humidity and all, it was generally miserable.

Get over it already. It's hot and the school's HVAC overworked themselves. BFD.
I went into a BB&T branch yesterday and their AC was down too. And the METRO rail car I got into didn't have AC (nothing new on THAT one). Guess it's all Jack Dale's fault we live in a climatologically F-ed up region...

We not only have obese kids----we have weaker kids. All of the great medical care and "advances" like cars, computers, etc. have allowed us to keep weaker people alive and breed. A little heat could kill some of them. We also have more ozone in the air than we did years ago (you can feel it when you breathe). We also have buildings that are constructed with A/C in mind---no windows that open and no consideration of ventilation from windows.

We have built homes and buildings that will not last the post cheap energy era.

I remember getting out of elementary school and middle school because of the heat on more than one occasion. That was back in the 80's and it was in FCPS. It even made the newspaper one time - my friends and I were in a picture leaving school on the front page of some rag.

This is back when kids played outside, there were no PC's, no Internet, and the only videogame system was fucking Atari. So closing schools because of the heat isn't a new phenomena.
