Spuntino's. Definitely. I got the name confused with a great pizza place near Warrenton that we always stop at when we return from whatever takes us out there (usually going to Shenandoah).

IIRC, the overpass was built in '87 or '88. I'm pretty sure the split happened around the same time as the overpass was put in (or shortly after). As has been said, the overpass was to get rid of the two grade-level RR crossings (at Burke Road and Burke Lake Road). The backup in the morning would extend up (the then two lane) Burke Lake Road to Shiplett (and sometimes past Shiplett). Coming from Lee Chapel / OKM Roads, we'd either take OKM to Rolling or Roberts to Guinea to get to school (LB) vs. taking the more direct Burke Lake to avoid the traffic. Even after the overpass was built, Burke Lake Rd was reduced to two lanes just past Coffer Woods. I don't recall when it was finally widened to four lanes all the way to BCP...must've been after I left the nest and made my way into the real world.

a little bit after "wall" was built. Traffic thru Burke was pretty bad, and came to a halt when a train would come thru. What really sucks though, is that VDOT pretty much just sprang the wall up on everybody - nobody really knew that their town (hell, their shopping center) was gonna be cut in half like that....................

Why didn't they build it around the shopping center? This wouldn't be such a crazy turn and it's nothing compared to the turn on Burke Road.

Does anyone remember the movie theater at Rolling Valley Mall? I think it was on the end where Ross is now. My brother and I walked there one time to see Karate Kid when it was released. The original, so this would have been in '84.

Here's a trivia question I don't know the answer to. What's this?

Bonus points if you don't zoom out.

Had to zoom out and I still don't know what that is. I used to go down that service road to, uh, smoke cigarettes (or something like that) but never knew what that lock and key complex is. In high school I was actually going down that road one night to smoke, uh, cigarettes and someone hit us from behind. The guy was the son of a cop and told us not to go to Accotink because they were doing foot patrols there. So we went to our LB basketball game instead. It was at that game that I didn't plan to go to that I met my wife who was a cheer leader for the other school

Went there many a time as a kid. It was inside the mall, just to the right of where Shoppers is now. Among the movies I recall seeing there were Prophecy, Black Stallion, Scanners, and that one at the mausoleum w/ the round silver ball with spikes on it that flew through the hallways looking for heads to drill into. The name completely escapes me right now.

Wow there are a lot of good stories on this thread. I went to Robinson and just banged cheerleaders there and at Lake Braddock since my neighborhood sat right on the line. There was always good *cigarettes* to be had in Burke though. Ahh the good old days.

Based on the train tracks, I'd have to say it's near Interstate Van Lines or near where Guinea crosses the train tracks -- near where the VRE is? Sorry, I'm going to have to zoom. No points for me. :-|

New trivia question:

What *elementary school* did the Burke Centre students attend before Terra Centre was built, back when Burke Centre was a new community, circa 1979?

Lol, interesting question - but I'd be the answer is "pretty low". Unless you also attended Cherry Run in the 80's and 90's.

@Mrs. Burke - The school for Terra Centre was...Burke School (guessing here -- our neighborhood went there as well before our school was built in 1974).

@Chris - you may be right: smokes and/or beverages. All I'll share is LB 86.

Burke School, before it was turned into an alternative learning center (or whatever it's called) ?

We used to go to the Handy Dandy in downtown Burke, across from the old fire station. They had a hitching post out back for our horses. Skinning dipping in Bell's pond....gas at Brown's Gulf station. Used to work for the Kinchloe's picking up bales of hay on their property. They had an old barn and silo across from their home.

What I remember:

7-11 in the old house @ Burke/Burke Lake Rds
Highs Convenience stores
Chuck-e-Cheese @ Burke Town Plaza
Roy Rogers, now McD's @ the same plaza
The Overpass built in 1987ish over Burke
And the rest of the road being widened in 1989...
I remember 123 being 2 lanes - not just from the PW line to Burke Lake, but 2 lanes into Fairfax!
The farm, before Pohick Library
The Miller compound at the corner of Burke Lake Rd and BC Pkway
Amaco gas station when they used to do "service" work - then they ripped it down (maybe around 87?) to make the quick fuels
Being able to make a left turn out of the McD's parking lot and head east on OKM road. This was back when it was a 2-way stop sign, not the traffic light today!
My family member writing to the USPS, asking for a drive-up window for the "new" post office - they built it...
Woolworths, Dart, and other stores come and go from Rolling Valley Mall... What was the name of that record and tape store in the mid-80s?
Traffic jams into Burke Lake Park - when Burke Lake Park was THE place to go after school...
When Jaxx was a movie theater - and Chesapeake Bay Seafood House was next door...
The white Corvette a guy borrowed one night at a party and totaled along Burke Rd. late one night (1990)
Late night bonfires - back when nobody in the county cared...

I could go on.... and on...

@20039- oh WOW Chuck E Cheese at Burke Town Plaza - wow, that WAS back in the day..................and 123 being two lanes - do you remember the school bus mailbox Fairview used to have? The old country stores that still stood abandoned at Silverbrook Rd, another at Henderson Rd? 123 was 4 lanes after Mason was built but only from university to Braddock. Got widened down to Burke Centre in 84/85, i think. I remember the old railway bridge, painted green.

and HEY!!! does anybody remember Death Camp? I only went there thru back trails, but apparently, you could get to it thru Poplar St (which DAMN, isnt even on Google Maps) and the railroad tracks. Some of y'all have GOT to know what I'm talking about. bonfires and wrecked cars. where now McMansions stand.

Poplar St is/was (i dunno) the side street that you can only get to from the Southbound lanes of Ox Rd, just after the railroad bridge but before Burke Centre Pkwy. Used to be a hella-popular veggie stand there, run out of an old school bus. I think the owner killed himself and the family stopped the business soon after that :(

I also remember the county collecting citizens trash at Burke Elem. School and the corner of Rt. 123/Silverbrook - it was a free service...

I remember an old gravel road to get to the TV tower in the 22039 however, now you turn into Fairfax Station (the subdivision) and again at the pool...

I remember 3 or 4 houses in that community bulldozed for the parkway/123 widening.

...what else?

The firehouse in the tent for Burke.

The three poles in Burke Lake park you could climb and ring the bell. Someone must've fallen off and sued. The poles are gone...

The old 7-11 which is not a pool cleaning svc. and was some kind of church, in between...

When the landscaping co. next door, was an auto repair place. Mostly VWs and old junkers - before all those roads were realigned...

The Buggy Man off Hooes - wait, he's still there...

Riding dirt bikes from the powerlines off OKM near Sydenstricker all the way down past South Run park, crossing Rt. 123, and over to Henderson...

Having field parties before Crosspointe was built in the old farm house which remained behind Evans Farm. That fun ended around 1992...

Four-wheeling where the retirement home now sits off 7900. We bought a junker for $125.00 and had the time of our lives back there, playing Dukes of Fairfax... Yee haw! That fun ended around 1997...

Watching the drag races on Manchester Lakes - before the lakes we made...

The roller rink off Franconia Rd - but that was only when we wanted out of "our part of town" and slummed past Edison...

What else... Hayfield and Loisdale pits... Etc.

that roller rink in Franconia. Wow, that building still stands, doesnt it? behind that gas station.

Reston used to have a roller rink too - when did that get bulldozed.

There was one in Dale City, but I think it got demolished long before Potomac Mills.................................

Okay, there is way too much stuff from the past on here for me to comment, but I am loving it! To Chris (I think) to my knowledge, Yannis never relocated. During the lease negotiations he was also going through a bad divorce, custody issues over his little girl and little boy. They used to be at the deli all the time on Saturday mornings, I worked in the shopping center back then. He was a very abrassive guy, but nice once you got to know him. He worked really hard and he was pissed when the landlord wanted more rent. To this day, my husband and I miss Spuntino's deli so much, as do lots of our fellow LB friends. That was such a damn good deli, nothing else out there like it. The Quizno's that opened up a few doors down is shit. And I do remember when the Glory Days was Chuck Cheese, I think one of my sisters had a birthday party there.

i know this was technically in Springfield and not Burke, but hopefully people won't mind too much..

Remember how awesome the old wooden playground at Orange Hunt was? That place was the best, though I guess it started falling apart and too many kids were getting splinters and all that and they finally had to take it down. They don't really make wooden playgrounds like that anymore, which is kind of a shame.

While on the topic of school related memories, does anyone remember how schools used to do this "safe house" program? Families would put this purple star with an orangey-red background card thing in their window I suppose to indicate that it was a safe house to go to in case a child got locked out of their own house. I know that at least Hunt Valley Elementary did this, not so sure about other schools..

I haven't seen any of these "window stars" in quite a while and it's not a surprise with the way people are so afraid of everyone anymore.

You make two good points. That playground was awesome! A gigantic wooden maze. At least it felt gigantic when you were a little kid. Sometimes the only way you knew where you were was by the painted drawings at various parts inside. Fond memories.

And yeah, I haven't seen those starred houses in quite awhile. I wonder what happened to that program...

Our family purchased our home in Burke back in 1973/74, just off Shiplett Blvd. Back then, Shiplett didn't connect to Burke Lake Road. The road used to be blocked at Capella (and further down near Glenbard?) with huge boulders. Some of those boulders now sit in the front yards of homes off Shiplett. I remember going to the old 7-11 in downtown Burke for glass bottle Dr. Pepper and a hot dog, sitting on the porch of the old store. After we moved into our house on Rockwell Court (White Oaks Elementary wasn't built then, it was all woods...), we would ride our bikes to where Capella hits Shiplett. From that corner all the way to Burke Lake Rd there were HUGE dirt mounds from construction. My brothers and I would ride up and down the dirt mounds, catching air. I loved horses as a young girl and remembered seeing people riding in the fields behind the Silas Burke house.

Anyone remember the one-lane bridge in downtown Burke? I spent half my childhood in the woods that creek ran through...the woods that went from the one-lane bridge, all the way down to Hatches Court. Back in those woods were old Civil War trenches, trees covered in barbed wire; we built forts back there and stayed in the woods all day long (it sucks my kids can't do that now...). We used to make rafts and run them down the creek, all the way to Hatches. The creek ran deep enough you could do that. When I was about 11 or 12 (1979), I started horseback riding and used to work at Hatches Stables. The lady there would let me ride in exchange for pulling weeds from the horse paddocks. We used to skate out on Hatches pond in the winter, if it froze over enough. When they built the townhouse developments off Shiplette, the run-off and re-direction plugged up the creek and killed it. I was so pissed when I discovered that, years later.

We used to go to the movie theater at Rolling Valley Mall, as well as the A & P, and Dart Drug. As a kid, I used to ride my bike all over Burke, from Rockwell Court, through the trails in the "new" development of Burke Centre. As a kid I attended Old Keene Mill Elementary. Our school bus had to take a long route to cut from Burke to Springfield, because it wasn't allowed to cross the Burke rail road tracks. My first high school job was as a cashier at Bradlee's (now Walmart).

Another "big" thing was the construction of Old Keene Mill pool. Our family was original members (my parents still are!). I remember going to see the pool when it was nothing but a dug out hole in the ground....My parents still live in their original home in Burke, I think about this old stuff every time I drive over to visit.

Good memories.

The playground at Orange Hunt was the shit! I went to Hunt Valley, and was SO jealous when that playground went in. BUT, Hunt Valley did have the BEST snow hill behind the school, when it snowed we were allowed to take the brown cafeteria trays and use them as sleds. Our principal (Mr. Luscavage) would ride down the hill with us. So much fun. I still see kids sledding down the hill at Irving and am suprised that the County allows it, what with lawsuits these days. Glad to see the kiddos can still have some fun.

And I remember those "safe house" stars. Were they orange with a blue outline of a house? They were all over Hadlow and Sydenstricker. I remember as a kid thinking "if a stranger or strange car pulls up, run to one of those houses".

It's entirely possible that my memory is off and that the "safe house" cards were actually with an outline of a house (haven't seen one in years and google isn't showing anything).

I'm really enjoying this thread, especially the posts about the Rolling Valley Mall theater. I had no idea there was ever a movie theater there, wow!

Also at Rolling Valley Mall:
-Several years ago there was a party supply store located where the Staples or Petco is currently. Probably didn't last more than a few years.

-I remember when the Japanese restaurant was an actual sit-down Pizza Hut restaurant, and now there's just the pizza hut take out place on the corner next to Shoppers.

-Seems like the Total Crafts store was there forever..obviously it no longer exists.

-Also I recall a tiny little pet store there that had an indoor location, maybe next to Trak Auto, though that probably would have been something like 20 years ago and probably the type of place that didn't last more than a few years.

-The Crown Book store that was in the same shopping center-it was maybe there until the early to mid 1990s.

Yeah, I remember the movie theater, the pizza place next door was run by the Vietnamese guy that had that famous shot in the head shot. I saw Raider's of the Lost Arc at that theater. The blond daughter got knocked up by the skeezy guy, he was so greasy.

Total Crafts was there forever :) originally a Ben Franklin, just like the one @ Turnpike Shopping Center in Fairfax. The Crown Books and Trak Auto were both "in the Mall" whereas Dart Drug (parent company) was outside the entrance.

Are you talking about the pool on Orion off of Capella? Spent tons of my childhood there. When was it built? We joined in probably mid-80's.

And speaking of the sit-down Pizza Hut (now Shiro's) - we went there every week due to the Book-It program. I must say their scheme worked - free personal pan pizzas got me hooked on reading.

I'm going slightly off topic here, but a poster above made me think of this.

Anyone attend the Halloween party that was in the field where Crosspointe is now? It was at the farm that used to be on the corner of Silverbrook and 123 (back when 123 was still a 2 lane road). This would have been late 80's, maybe '87 or '88 I think. If you were there, you'd remember it. I think every cop in Fairfax County (including a helicopter) showed up to shut it down. It was even on the news the next day, with estimates that there were over 1000 kids there.

The land was sold shortly after that and Crosspointe went in a few years later.

Great thread!

I completely remember the dude, "snyder" at Trak Auto. Funny stuff!

I also remember OKM Pool, but was never a member. They had a fire in the late 80s at the gazebo, or something.

Now, who remembers the old 1/4 pipe ramp w/ the "lead-in" ramp built where Wilmington Drive used to dead-end - it was on the "newer home" side, not Burke Centre

While I am thinking, I recall we could have bought the parcel of land which was a farm off BCP for $325k. This was sold to a developer who tore down the barn and built townhomes. The rest of the land, is the Burke Centre Conservancy.

Great thread!!!

Memories...

Burke Center Parkway Kohls. Someone mentioned it was a Hechingers before Kohls. Anyone remember what was before Hechingers. :)

I also remember riding my bike through Hadlow drive to Linden Tree Lane to get to the 7-11 which was right next to the lawnmower repair place. Fairfax County parkway took that down.

I also went to many movies at the Rolling Valley Mall theatre.

Yep, it was "Handy Dandy Market #3", as I recall. I don't know where H-D Market #2 is/was, but the original Handy Dandy Market (#1) is still open in Woodbridge, at the corner of Occoquan Road and Horner Road.

What else?

Aside from the 1/4 pipe ramp at the end of Wilmington Dr., there was another one off Henderson Rd. about 1/4 mile from 123.

I remember "bottoming out" in the big dip along silverbrook rd. between Hooes and 123 - it was filled and leveled out when the developers took over. Would have been just past where the CVS sits now, heading toward 123...

The 1-lane bridge on Lee Chapel (now an overpass crosses the creek) with the crazy twists in the road leading to the bridge. Always crashes there!

Pohick Rd, when it went from RT 1, all the way to RT 123 as 2-lane rd...

Burke Centre McDonalds originally had a "Farm" motif - pictures of farmland, everywhere inside!

Rolling Rd. McDonalds has motocross pictures at a couple of the booths. This was in the 70s, when Motocross and BMX were pretty huge!

What else???

My first experience with 1-lane bridges - sometimes you'd have to wait for probably 10 cars in front of you to take their alternating turns. And yeah, that curvy hill leading down was crazy!

> Pohick Rd, when it went from RT 1, all the way to
> RT 123 as 2-lane rd...

I thought I remembered Pohick dead-ending at 123 in a T-shape in the middle of the woods (now a giant overpass) and Robert Carter spun off a little ways down. However, maybe it was a 4-way light - can anyone help me remember?

I haven't been there in years - but I found it so interesting that that McDonalds had a basement. However it was roped off like 95% of the time.

Now here's a trivia question (again, don't know answer): Can anyone tell me the historical reasons that led to that area of Robert Carter, Clara Barton and Havenner remaining in the Woodson (Frost, and Oak View) school district despite being completely surrounded by Robinson?

Before Hechingers it was a farm. That was before Burke Centre had been built.

One of the enduring mysteries of my Burke teenage years was the pizza place in Rolling Valley Mall. There was NEVER anyone in this place (not that you couldn't shoot an Uzi in that Mall and never worry about hitting anyone). The guy who owned it was later outed by the local media as the South Vietnamese general executing the prisoner in the famous photo. But the mystery of how a place that no person I ever knew set foot in could stay in business remained. My favorite theory was that it a front for the local Vietnamese mafia.

Pohick Rd hit Rt 123 at a stop sign (I can still picture it in my mind) where cars could go straight across to Robert Carter, or left/right on 123.

The first one or two homes on each side going into the neighborhood were bulldozed in the early 90s for what would become the Fairfax County Parkway. That's right, the exit ramp from the Fairfax County Parkway where it meets 123 is right where those homes were.

Lester's towing was on the right hand side, just before Rt 123 and there was an old plant nursery on the left side.
The old plant nursery had all sorts of four-wheeling trails back into the woods. Then those houses came in the mid-90s...

Burke Lake Rd and Pohick Rd used to be a 4-way stop sign. Always a cluster- %$#& trying to get through there near 5 PM

The Robert Carter/Pohick Rd intersection was the first to get a light for the Fairfax Station neighborhood, years before the Clara Barton light. It was actually more like 3-5 homes that got bulldozed for the intersection, at least 2-3 more inside the neighborhood.

Pohick Rd has a TON of 4 way stops - one of the reasons the Parkway was built was the traffic at all those stops. Bonus points to whoever can name all the 4 ways stop signs (hint: Pohick, Rolling was a 3-way, but that's where the "fun" started)

Now let's see who remembers hanging out at the ORIGINAL Fairfax Station 7-11 at Butts Corners, or the nursery that used to be there - and how that intersection used to look. The "gas station" there was long abandoned when I got here, but does anybody remember when it was open, what sorta station it was?

And I'd still LOVE to hear if anybody ever went to those old country stores (123 and Silverbrook/123 and Henderson), what they were like.........................

Not sure if you're thinking of Turkey Bash in November '88. A fraternity at Mason hosted the party in the old farmhouse. 20+ kegs, folks all over the place and four wheeling across the field in a '78 Corrolla in order to escape when the cops showed up. At one point people were tearing down the walls, putting holes in the floor, etc. I'm surprised no one fell through the holes in the floor!

I went to the original Burke School. Across the street there was as someone put it, “the Miller compound”. Yes, they had goats and chickens running around. Later they had hubcaps and things for sale in their yard. Went to school with their daughter “Jo Jo”.

The movie theatre at Rolling Valley was great. We use to go there and then getting spring rolls and a coke at the Vietnamese guys pizza joint. From there it was to the record store to browse the albums. You could kill a whole afternoon at Rolling Valley. Where the heck do kids go for fun these days?

Speaking of record stores, anyone remember the old mom and pop record store in Burke Center? It changed to a Music and Arts store eventually. The folks that ran the place were really nice.

Has the Five Star hair ever been anything but Five Star hair? I swear, out of all the places to come and go they seem to have lasted the longest.

Anyone remember Mr. Gatti’s? They had the best pizza in town, honest!

Anyone remember shopping at the Burke Bradlees?

What was the name of the hair salon at RV Mall? Can't remember but got my first 80's perm there in 1984. Stylists included Donna and Fred and was owned by Lance Marciafava of House of Lance. Lance had a few salons, only one I remember was at the end of OKM/Rolling Giant shopping center (with NorthernVa Bank, Kinney's, People's).

This is driving me crazy...what was the name of the ice cream parlor built in the parking lot of RV Mall? Didn't last long, but recall going there after Homecoming in 85.

I can still see the shiny brown brick flooring in the RV Mall. They were slippery and hazardous. There used to be a Dress Barn at the mall until about early 90's.

I can recall when the Giant at Burke Center Shopping Center first opened up there was a lot of buzz about it being a "Gourmet Giant" which was something like a Whole Foods. However, i think it was just really large ruglar old Giant.

Where Golds Gym is on 123 near Burke Center Pkwy used to be "Fresh Fields" before that a Fantels. I think Whole Foods acquired Fields in the 90's but closed that location.

At the intersection of Burke Center Pkwy and 123 used to be Bills Farm Market. It was basically year round farmers Market. It closed after Bill comitted suicide. Anyone remember Bills real name?

What the "Gourmet" meant was that they had tons of items available "bulk" outta the old brown barrels... They had nuts, dried fruits, candies, etc etc etc, all available by the scoop/pound. I remember kids at my school used to steal the kids belts off of the shopping carts and wear them as key/wallet chains.

@ More Complete - the cleaners to the left of Safeway (and I guess the Safeway too LoLz) are also original members of that particular club as well

@ Funfax - before Fantles, it was a Dart Drug. There was a Trak Auto and a Crown Books also, to the right of it all. They outlasted the Dart Drug, but when it became a food store, they made it one whole unit. Also, you forgot that between Fantles and Fresh Fields, it was actually a Food Lion :)

The Burke Centre Giant had (has? i dunno) a LOT of stuff the other Giants didnt have. No, it wasnt a legit Gourmet Giant, but when it opened, they DID have a lot of delicacies. I remember how they had Cow Brains in the meat section when I first went in there.

Bet that wasnt a huge seller LoLz

but yeah, Bills Market was that nursery/food place that was run out of the old school bus (sorta) on Poplar St, next to the railroad tracks that I was tlaking about earlier. Thanks for that name.

That was Hilary's. Not sure how long it lasted, but it was good while it did.

Hilary's!! That's it. My local friends could not remember. Great place and I was surprised that it wasn't there longer. Shocking what retail survives in Fairfax County and what quickly shutters.

Off to research what I remember about the Helping Hand program that was referenced a few posts back. As a lifelong walker, it seems that I always knew to look for the helping hand in the window. I recall an actual hand graphic, similar to today's "walk" sign on orange poster board. The idea was that several houses near the route to school would have a Helping Hand mom volunteer who was guaranteed to be at home and could help in an emergency. Come to think of it, maybe we should bring this back, but can you imagine the liability today?

Its surprising how many retailers have passed through that anchor spot in that shopping centers 25yr history. Those drug stores usuually carry a 10-15 year
leases, grocery stores 20-25 years and often without any rent increases.

Kind of sad to think that the area used to be a somewhat fun place to grow up until the mid-late 90's. It was suburban but with local/regional chains and or local family owned and there was still enough country left that a youngster could find go ol'e clean trouble such as 4 wheeling, dirt biking, field parties, etc. Not anymore though, everything has been bulldozed and developed. Now Fairfax is one giant unic....Oh well I guess thats progress....

I remember Butt's corner 7-11. It was the best. Also, someone mentioned the little stores off 123 and I know it's a ways down but near the prison, there used to be a shop owned by an Asian Family. They sold Crazy Horse malt liquor and the rumor was that they didn't check IDs. One time, my friend bought with a terrible fake and then the lady (who was not the seller) started following us in a van. It was weird! Also, they had a really old man who would wander around the store kind of out of it. We always joked that he got a brain injury in the Vietnam war. Not really funny now that I think about it!

Speaking of the field party off 123 near silverbrook, LB had a similar party in Spring 1995. Seemed like the whole school was there. The guys who planned it would pick you up in a truck or mini-van and go off road through the woods and eventually get to the huge opening. There were balloons at the pick up location off 123 and everyone would park accross the street. It got busted too but it was epic! When the cops first showed they were so confused b/c they saw the cars and knew there was a party but didn't know how to get there.

@FurfaxTownie - I used to ask the same sorta questions - and from the answers I got from more than a cpl of shopkeepers, it was due to the fact the owners were a-holes. Rising rents and parking spaces so small a mouse couldnt fit in one were reoccurring issues with Fairfax Station Square throughout the 90's.

@Stones - Atomic Fire Balls was my personal fav :)

are their any food stores around that still do bulk foods?

Out west, WinCo (a walmart-like grocery store) and Yokes (kinda local Spokane region-type store like Giant was waaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day before the Dutch bought it) had them around.

Yep, I know the guy who owned the tanning salon there, said the same thing. Owners were jerks who constantly raised rent.

Have they widened those parking spaces at Fairfax Station Square ever? I remember they used to be tiny.

There was some other spot in Burke that also had super tiny parking spaces, but I can't quite remember. Was it the K-mart (now Walmart)? It's really bugging me.

The area where Rolling Road goes over the Norfolk Southern train tracks via bridge....let's say you're heading south on that bridge, isn't there still part of the old bridge abutment still visible from way back in the day when Rolling Road made a slight curve over the tracks?

Glory Days is now where Chuck-e-Cheese in Burke

Miller brew, no. The last name of the people who owned the property were the Millers...

Bosten CHICKEN, I remember that...

I was just thinking about the "Books" store that started next to Safeway @ 123 and BCP, or more specifically, "Sacks Are Loaded" the Sports Card store that was in the back of "Books".

God I can picture the grumpy-ass guy behind the counter, a miserable old codger, Maybe his name was Barry? does anybody remember him or know why he was such a grumpy jerk? Probably because he couldn't pay the mortgage selling me 50 cent Cal Ripkens or Ken Griffey Jrs.

the "Books" section moved to burke village 2 (which has since closed). The comics part of the store moved to the section of the shopping center near Kohls, then to University Mall.

My theory is Barry Sacks was in the FBI witness relocation program.

Of course he was an old codger, he spent his days haggling with little kids over a few dollars and Leer Jose Conseco Rookie card.

We used to go to Planet Play in the shopping center where the Wal-Mart is all the time, not sure what the place is now. Spent sooooo much money playing Time Crisis haha that was addicting.

Anyone know what used to be at the southwest intersection of Burke Road and Burke Lake Road adjacent to the Southern Railroad tracks where they're now building houses? I remember before the construction happened, there was a old shed with some type of machine in it. But I do know on the opposite side, there used to be a mulch pile.
