Taco Bell has always been Taco Bell hasn't it? Maybe it was a KFC before then? That McDonald's has been there forever. There was also an Old Library back in that area that burned down way back in the day.

Here is one for you JBass - What was the McDonald's at the corner of Old Keene Mill and Burke Centre Before it was a McDonalds?

Im pretty sure 123 splits Burke and Fairfax designations, for the post offices anyhow.

BurkeBorn is indeed on fire. Byadleys, Check. Khols was Hechingers, Check! Tolteca was indeed Pizza Hut and Yes, Taco Bell was build on the old burned down library spot.

I remember Tippy Taco and Burger King on either side of where Planet Play used to be but for the life in me dont know what was actually there before Planet Play. Probably a nail salon. At the corner of that row there is a Barber shop ( I think it its still a barber shop anyhow) What was it before that? There have been a few things, including at least one crappy eat-in order at the counter restaurant... Any takers?

Here's one for those in the know, what was the pizza place next to Giant in downtown Burke? We'd go there between weigh-ins and evening wrestling matches (since we starved ourselves to make weight).

Moving to Rolling Valley Mall: name the store where Shopper's is now. What were the two anchor stores on the opposite end of the mall?

The barber shop before it was a spaghetti store was a baskin robbins. They made awesome root beer floats.

That baskin Robbins moved next to the Safeway off Burke Centre Parkway and is now either the music store there or the ABC store.

It was in Rolling Valley Mall. I ate there more than a few times in my youth. A slice of pie and a coke was all I could afford; I had to save my quarters for Defender, Joust, Asteroids, etc., at Dart Drug.

Was Butt's Corner in Burke? I remember when I was young finding a case of Molson beer near the 7-11 Dumpster. It was all frozen, and a couple bottles were broken and then when it melted (in my closet) there was this floating stuff in it. But I drank it warm anyway and would think I was drunk off just one beer.

That was the Burke Station Restaurant, a really good little neighborhood place that served Ledo's pizza. They dropped Ledo's pizza from the menu at some point because of the increase in licensing cost, and it closed down a year or so later. Too bad, because it was convenient for Ledo's pizza, and the rest of the menu was decent too.

The second Errols was over there by the Pizza Hut (Before Tolteca, of course) It was possibly in the spot where the take-out Chinese is now.

Before The Gym (Same shopping Center as 2nd errold and Pizza Hut), It was one thing then before that 2 different things side by side at the same time...

Not sure about the other Erol's locations, but the *original* one was waaaaay over on Port Royal Road in Springfield (behind the shopping center w/ Kilroy's -- or Uncle Sam's for those real long timers). You had to have a card to get in and shopped by section: Beta or VHS.

Nope, the strip with Hollywood Video was added later I believe. But you're very close by.

Also what was the bank on the corner (now a BoA I think) there right next to Hollywood Video and Boston Market?

Yes, Burke Station Restaurant. I actually thought it was a Ledo's when I wrote that questions. It's where all the end of the season youth soccer and baseball teams would have their trophy dinners because there were video games.

I know the Gold's Gym was a Food Lion and before that a Fresh Fields (whole foods) but not sure what it was before that.

You are technically correct - that one was there first I think, but I didn't consider it "Burke".

The one I was thinking of was INSIDE Rolling Valley Mall, to the back and far left.

When we moved here, it was Northern Virginia Bank, which then became Sovran (with someone else in between?) and finally bought out by BoA.

The old hotel used to be on the property of Burke Nursery. I think it's actually that old house to the left facing the Nursery.

Also, Dulles airport was originally going to be in Burke. There was all this open area after the Forest Fire (early 1900's?). That's why you have "Burnside Landing". That half of Burke Centre was burnt down.

I was told that's why the church at the corner of Pohick (now 7100) and Lee Chapel was torn down - to get ready for the airport.

It always amused me there were 3 stone steps up to .... nothing, surrounded by a cemetary.

The inside of the building was super old with short ceilings and uneven floors and steps. There was also a family grave site in the basement. Weird.

Rolling Valley Mall was a shithole back in the day, but it was a great place to be a delinquent. Dart Drug had it all -- even lumber! -- and next to it was Woolworths. Trak Auto was inside the mall and, as w/ all Combined Properties, there was the obligatory Crown Books. Woolworth's was where Ross is now (is it still a Ross?) and Dart Drug was next to it. Shoppers was originally an A&P.

Dart Drug had a few video games so most of the time we hung there.

Ahhh...the days of misspent youth.

Nice. Yeah, talking about how much your house is worth to make you sound better than others is probably the lamest thing you can do in an email thread. Why am I not working right now? If I get fired, then I'll have to sell my super awesome house in Burke Centre. Then that guy will definitely be better than me.

If I lived in Lorton, I don't think I'd be telling people in Burke they are practically PW County. So on top of having inferiority complexes, people in Burke are stupid as well. Enjoy your VRE.

Your saying we have inferiority complexes... you came on here and posted annonymously and I quote said "You loosers live in Bukre, I have a huge house and make a ton of money". You say we have inferiority complexes? Are you kidding me? We are just having fun. Your being the dick. Now go back to typing shit that doesn't matter at Booz Allen Hamilton and jerking off to that cougar that rejected you last night at coastal.

There are homeless people everywhere so that doesn't mean a thing. Since you are so rich and your house is so awesome you might actually have some living in a tent on your property or maybe in your 14th bedroom that you have not even visited in over a year. And all of us from Burke would very much admit that Rolling Valley Mall was a craphole.

But Bill Jr., he was a
daredevil, just like his old man. He was leaning out saying, "Hey
everybody! Look at me, look at me!" POW! He was decapitated. They found
his head over by the snowcone concession.

Wow, I didn't realize living in Burke gave all of you extreme emotional inferiority complexes. I was just making a small joke. You guys are right. Burke is the best. Who wouldn't want to live there? In fact, you have convinced me it is so great that I am going to sell my house and buy three of yours.

You need that written down? Fine.

Denied.

Coastal is outside the beltway and a chain.

BAH...I know some folks that work there, but who doesn't?

I don't think making an assumption that we have inferiorty complexes is the appropriate conclusion here. I'm sure all of us are plenty comfortable with our plot in life. Most of the reponses from Burke folks are talking about how lame you are and not defending how Burke must be better than where you live. You are the one that seems to have to prove that you are so much better. You are just a tool by nature, regardless of what you do or don't own. So your analytical skills are pretty bad as well. If you did work for BAH, I'm thinking you are not a consultant.

My two farthings on Burke: My folks moved to the new, and not yet completed Lake Braddock Community in 1970. The lake was not built yet, and of course LBSS, wasn't finished until 1973, and was just a patch of woods. Braddock Road and Burke Lake Road simple two lane roads. Burke had a 7-11 located in an old house where the post office currently is, and the post office was in an old house where the firehouse is currently. The current shopping center with Giant,Spartans,Merchants ect. was just a field where some large drainage pipes were stored as you crossed the railroad tracks. The path to 7-11 and back to the emerging Lake Braddock community became well worn. Those days since the building of LB was only in it's infancy, the construction guys left their soda bottles strewn where the new houses were being built. Bottles still recyclable at that time, meant many trips the 7-11 to retrieve our nickle per bottle. I don't remember when Inga Hutchinson took over the Burke 7-11, before or after it moved to their current location?

As Burke developed, the traffic back-ups at the two RR crossing points, Burke Lake Road and Burke Road became ponderous, and eventually the overpass was built. I don't remember what was built or had been built where the Taco Bell currently resides, but with the overpass the whole nature and configuration of Burke Lake Road and Burke Road changed. Burke lake road used to continue from that point (Taco Bell) essentially up and over the hill at a completely different angle, ending as it does now in front of Burke Elem. School. Burke Road didn't loop up to hit Burke Lake Road before the overpass, but continued on straight and crossed the RR tracks, where it made a sharp left and continued into Burke. Essentially the road that leads into the hidden shopping center across from Giant on the other side of the overpass was the line of old Burke Road.

Yes, Spartans was the Pepperoni Stick, and the grocery store has always been a Giant, although I think every other retail location has changed hands over the years. The Pepperoni stick at some point divided and the right side of it became a narrow bar, you had to decide, restuarant or bar when you came in by the entrance way, that was pretty shortlived. The smaller shopping center which was built accross the street, to which the 7-11 moved after it was decided that it's former location was going to become a large post office, there was a dive with live music there called Spanky's Place for awhile, and off course My Brother's Place, which had cheap but good pizza and gyros, until, either one or both of the primary owners blew themselves up attempting to do a little redecorating. As I remember they were trying to remove the old carpet squares the type with black foam backing, the story was some local gel employee suggested to use gasoline as a solvent to get the foam off the substrate, the fumes and pilot lights to the oven didn't mix well, and the fucking place blew, killing one or both of the owners.

Some other memories: as you drive up Coffer Woods, making a right off of Burke Lake Road, back beyond the townhouses which are on the right as you head up the hill, was a pond. Either Bells or Belles pond. Up through the 1970s all kind of hippies and ragamuffins used to live and congregate there in their vans and vw microbuses, I guess the place got drained when they built the town homes. Until all the redevelopment and roads, up until about the early 1980s, you could still see all the old foundations for the buildings for the original Burke RR station, which was a nice place to catch a buzz or drink. I guess some of that stuff may still be there.

There is very good book on the history of Burke, with lots of photos etc. Which had some older info from way before my time, for example, I didn't know that in the 1920s, folks from DC woud jump on the train and come out to Burke for baseball games and horse racing in the summer, as it was considered a trip to the country. The current location of the Burke Garden center was where there was an oval racetrack for horses.

Yeah..one more thing, you would have to be a real old timer I reckon to remember this. There was a guy, a hermit, that would hang around the RR tracks and along the older homes in Burke, which is the area behind Giant shopping center. This guy was like a Jethro Tull Aqualung looking fellow, and as a kid, a pretty strange looking dude. The original Burke homeless guy, but I think he had a place. We didn't get too close, but since we would run around that whole area. We would see this oddball every once in awhile. I wonder if anyone out there remembers what the story was with that guy...I used to know, but I can't pull it now...

Ummm, you come into a nice thread recalling Burke trivia with no real bashing going on, and have to start a flame war.

Your opening comment:

"Ha ha, you losers all live(d) in Burke!"

Completely out of place in the context of the thread. You then follow up a with a oh-so-insightful:

"No house in Burke is worth anywhere near the home I own. Sorry, you are practically PW County. so actually......."

I'm not sure what you feel the need to prove by interjecting yourself into this thread and starting a flame-war for no reason. You're either a trolling, internet tough guy, or are telling the truth but have an enormous personality defect.

There was a two-floor Pier One Imports store back in the 80s-mid 90s on the far left side of the shopping center (as you enter the parking lot).

I loved and miss Toyland at University Mall.

EDIT: I cannot type today.

The current furniture place in Rolling Valley was also an F&M at one point, I think that stood for Frank and Martha's.

Anyone remember the name of the deli in Burke Town Plaza? It may have been where the cigar store is or next door to the cigar store. We used to stop there every day after school for pizza.

Spitoni's! Awesome place but terrible name. They had the best gyro and were owned by an awesome Greek family. At least once a month, I joke with my wife that we should order from there.

I want to say the Burke Lake Road overpass over the railroad tracks happened in the late 80's. I recall going down the part of Burke Rd. by the 'hidden shopping center', and crossing over the tracks there to continue on Burke Rd. heading west. But perhaps that was after the overpass but before they put the 2nd (northern) light for B.R. and B.L.R.

When did they disconnect the two parts of Old Burke Lake Rd. ? (the small part that goes through the shopping center area, and the longer one accessible from Lake Braddock Dr.)

It's still there, but it's a much differenct place. They've tried to go upscale. Gone are the vinyl booths and linoleum tabletops, replaced by blond wood. The dinner menu has more entree-type items and a wine list, and the prices are higher. It's not bad but, personally, I liked it better when it was less pretentious and cheaper.
