I don't know who decided to resize the parking spaces at RVM, but your SOL if you drive a full size vehicle, and god forbid you go in the early morning, the GYM has taken over most of the spaces, and most of the mall.

This has taken me back, way back. I remember Patty's when she still lived on Seminary Road in Alexandria. We hacked the horses & ponies over to the farm in Burke when the big move happened. That was all country, farms and horses then. Later I kept a horse at Chuck Ackerman's barn. Well, at that time he rented one with the stalls in the middle and an outside aisle around the inner squarew which we used for riding at night or during inclement weather. Is that where he ended up? This would have been around 1962 or '63. I remember Dr. Mauser. Our blacksmith back then was Red Revelle.

Dart Drug, and enclosed shopping mall and the Rolling Valley Movie theater was located near shoppers. I saw The Exorcist at that theater!

Its kind of ironic that there is once again a movie theatre there. This time its inside the gym, in a special dark room with exercise bikes and that type of stuff. The screen is decent size, bigger than some small theaters, sound quality is decent, and you can exercise during the films. Or you can just sit on a machine and watch.

By the way the Dollar store next to the gym is amazing. Excellent variety of stuff there, for a $1 of course.

Hello all, I just discovered this thread and enjoyed reading about Patty's Riding Stable, where I was a camper -- the only boy -- in 1958 and '59. I've found some of the Ruffner family, whom I knew, some of the counselors, and am looking for Rennie Rodgers (sp?). No one I've contacted knows where she is. If anyone knows I'd appreciate a lead! Thanks, Mike Holmes

You might be able to see the old ROW near in Silas Burke Park.

I grew up in Falls Church but in 1963 my grandparents moved to Red Fox Forest (off of Braddock opposite Kings Park Shopping Center). My grandfather was an avid fisherman and it didn't him long to discover Burke Lake (very primitive back then - nothing more than a bait shed at the lake's marina).

On his way to the lake he would often stop at Carson's Trading Post (the old house 7-11) across from the fire department to buy bait. He eventually met Roy Carson, the Burke VFD Fire Chief, who told him about other good fishing ponds in the area. As I always enjoyed fishing with my grandfather, I would often ride along in his well-worn '64 Nova, so I got to meet Chief Carson and check out all of the station's fire trucks. Pretty exciting stuff for a 9 or so year old kid!

I found this photo of the second Burke Fire Station online. From the age of the equipment parked in front, I'm guessing this was taken in the early 1960s.

I'd also like to know where Bell's Pond was located!

Grew up in Burke, but I was born in the late 70s so I missed the rural stuff. My haunts:

Burke Village Center: I rode my bike to get slurpees at the 7-11 across from the fire station; took my daughters there just a few months ago. I'm glad people remembered the haunted house; I had forgotten about that. A favorite memory is the light-up tinsel displays they'd put on the light posts of the parking lot. The Giant is closed now, which is sad. Anyone remember the large guy who did the carts at Giant (short red hair, always talked to us kids)? I remember the post office, and afterward when it was converted into a mower repair shop (we brought ours there). Also, Han's TV repair shop. What was there before Spartan's? Also, there was a library on the site where the taco bell is now?? I have no memory of that. I'd love to know more about the old houses back along the railroad... did I hear someone say that there are graves nearby the 7-11?

Twinbrook: We'd also bike to get ice cream at BR and pizza at Pizza Hut (BookIt!). Also, shoutouts to McKay's bookstore and Twinbrook Video! Just this past year I traded in store credit from that location at the McKay's in Manassas; store members were calling each other over to take a look at the old-school vouchers. I forget what it was before the video store. Also, remember the little Santa booth at the elbow of the stores, and the reindeer? I can't remember if the reindeer were on the flat vertical part of the roof, or up on top.

Kings Park: What was the name of the restaurant in Kings Park that had the artwork on the window (I think in gold foil) that had this comic strip character, and a tall woman with big hair holding a tray with a fish on it? I could be misremembering. Also I remember when the CVS was a Hardees. I was looking through my stuff and found some halloween toys from there (my parents would take me for meals there after school at Holy Spirit). I live elsewhere but I still go see the same dentist I've had since the beginning of time (Dr. Olenyn, off Lyngate Ct).

Rolling Valley: I bought a little 12-18" christmas tree, lights, and ornaments from Ben Franklin when I was in grade school. I've put it up every year since then. I never knew about the pizza place owned by the guy from that execution photo, that's crazy.

Thank you everyone for your memories and the pictures!

The artist was Bill Rechin, who passed away in 2011 and created the nationally-syndicated "Out of Bounds" and "Crock" cartoon strips. His family still lives around here. The restaurant moved to another location, if I remember correctly.

Bells Pond is just off the old railroad crossing. If your in the section of the Shopping Center that was cut of from where the Giant was, you can see the old road going to the trail tracks, That was the railroad crossing. Bells Pond is just to the left..Whats left of it,I saw it there a few years ago.It looks overgrown with trees and woods, I vaguely remember a small pier on the pond about 6 feet long near the tracks and it was indeed a pond, there is a hill that went up to Burke View Drive. The Chief of Fairfax Co Police Durrer lived there next to Don Crump who owned gas stations in Springfield and had a "Mansion Home" at the time. Anyway the Google Maps has reference to Bells Pond, but they show it on the right of the tracks which is wrong. The pond feeds off Pohick Creek but the whole area is now somewhat developed.

They also walked down the tracks toward Clifton about 3/4 mile to a Dilapidated Farm House to party that was abandoned called the Pagans House as the MC gang had used it as a club house and party place..One of the Smoked Up Youth became Infamously Known as "The Bunnyman"..R.I.P.....

There was a run-down shack on that plot of land for awhile, until it caught fire in the early 2000's. Was that any way associated with Bell's Pond?

I'm thinking about was along Burke Lake Road near Burke View Rd.I remember that old house that was there occupied long ago then abandoned long too..and It was not all that far but that was not Bells Pond where it stood. I dont remember any shack that was at Bells Pond. It seems like it was clear to the hill behind the pond, free of trees but tall weeds and brush, but I did not tromp round there I only had a few glances at that area, and there may well have been a house in the woods. And that was 46-47 years back Natch..Trees could be 60 ft tall by now..all over the area..

There are many folk that are still round the area who know Bells Pond better then me and that area..All..Old Geezers today..Natch..LOL!!

BTW The Road into the Lake Braddock subdivision off Burke Road..Lake Braddock drive was just being bulldozed in there back then 70-71-72 and ended about Wallingsford..No houses ,in 70.. they were getting ready to build. I was not from that area, and Burke was a popular place for young folk to go for a ride.."Getting Back To the Country"..LOL.. Lake Braddock School was built about 1974 and opened in 1975 I think. And I really never knew how big that Lake Braddock even was..never walked round there. Just a bypasser..short cutting thru..

DAJAX Go take a look at where I said Bells Pond was and see what's there. The storm management projects probably have changed the way it was .

And does anyone know when that pond at the corner of Burke Road and Lake Braddock Drive was put in? It's at this location: https://goo.gl/maps/A51d4B7LFdD2

Also there was a building next to where the pond is now, shown in the pink circle. The image is circa 1949:

He would belt out “ welcome! To Roy’s! Can I take your order!!!!” I would get startled.

Never seen this thread till now.

The La Tolteca/Golds Gym shopping center. When it was a Fantles, I worked there and was held up by a gunman one night. Just me and the manager and we were tied up together. After the gunman left, I ended up holding the phone cord with my teeth while the lady manager called the police or I thought so, with her nose. She called her boyfriend instead. :/ My parents at the time were wondering why I didn't come home after work and my mom sent my dad to check on me. He saw my car and looked into Fantles. At that time we had mostly broken free of our restraints. Probably near the cash registers looking for scissors. He ran up to the 7/11 where probably Georges Steak n Things is now and called the police. Few minutes later we were free of our restraints and ran outside. The boyfriend showed up in his truck with a shotgun and a few seconds later two police cars came roaring up. lol.

Went to school at Hunt Valley like another posted on here and eventually WSHS 85. Thanks for the memories.

Wow, am I late to this party!

I too was an LBSS alumni, graduating in 1979 (my brother graduated in 1981). Lived on Capella Avenue from 1976 to 1982 when we moved to western Loudoun County.

The Robinson students had classes from 7am until noon, then we LBSS students had classes from 1pm to 6pm. A real mess! And we lost one day of class that we had to make up that Saturday, my mom made both my brother and I go and I vividly remember the place being almost completely empty and nothing being taught.

I liked the Rolling Valley Mall theater, although according to Combined Properties site map it was removed when the gym went in. I remember seeing LITTLE DARLINGS and BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTURY, my father and I saw STAR WARS: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and IIRC one of the Bond films.

James Stevens. I knew him through his connection with Greg R. who did an Elvis show for his band. Almost got dragged out of college to try and talk with him to release his hostages but very luckily didn't have to - he wouldn't have talked to me anyway...

Sure do.I remember it as being owned (in the 1950s) by Douglas and Ruth Hatch who had two daughters that I only knew as Tink and Dell. What is referred to as a pond was a 3-acre spring fed lake on the property. It was accessed off of what's now I-95 at the Old Keene Mill Road exit. The property itself was off of Rolling Road which wasn't paved at the time (I can't find it on the map today). It was a summer day camp in what was then a rural area. It featured horseback riding and other activities. I was there in the summer of 1955 and 1956.
