Friday, May 20 is Bike to Work Day
Posted by: Lance ()
Date: May 16, 2011 08:32AM

May is National Bike Month and Friday, May 20 is Bike to Work Day. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG), the Washington Area Bicyclists Association (WABA), and local governments including Fairfax County will host one of the nation’s largest Bike to Work Day events. The annual event is held every spring to increase awareness and expose people to the benefits of bicycling to work, and to the market, the library, the café, the book store, the bike shop…basically everywhere!

This year, there are 49 pits stops around the region. Nine pit stops will be set up throughout Fairfax County:

* Reston Town Center (at the intersection of Discovery Street and Market Street)
* Vienna (at the Vienna Town Green on the W&OD)
* Fairfax City at Van Dyck Park
* Fairfax Corner (in the plaza opposite Coastal Flats)
* Tysons Corner (at Booz Allen Hamilton, 8283 Greensboro Drive)
* Springfield (Metro Park at Walker Lane)
* Merrifield (at the intersection of Sandburg Street and the W&OD)
* Burke VRE Park and Ride Lot
* Herndon (at the Town Hall Green just off the W&OD)

Pit stops will provide snacks and drinks, offer free bicycle tune-ups, and a chance to meet fellow riders. Participants who register with WABA will get a 2011 Bike to Work Day t-shirt and be eligible to win some cool prizes. To register or get additional information, visit the WABA Web site at www.waba.org.

To find the most convenient bicycle route, contact the pit stop managers listed on WABA’s Bike to Work Day Web site or contact the Fairfax County Department of Transportation’s bicycle program staff at 703-877-5600 or e-mail bicycleprograms@fairfaxcounty.gov.

Bike to Work Day is an opportunity to encourage people to think about bicycling as a commuter option. It's fun, it's healthy, and it's green!

You see all the smug bike assholes who love to bike on two lane country roads.

It is so rude. To go around them you must pass over a double solid white line. That means you are going into a part of the street that may have oncoming traffic.

I hate bikers!

that pic is actually something far horribly different - was a bike ride in Mexico and what you are witnessing is a drunk driver who swerved into them, killing one of them.

Excellent! This is great support for current cyclists, and a great introduction to those who might be thinking about cycling to work. An educated, physically active and health-seeking citizenry is always good for society.

Your hatred is misplaced. What you really hate is your own ignorance of bikers' intentions and the law. Most of us aren't smug - just enjoying the RIGHT to ride our bicycles.

Some of us are just enjoying a pleasant ride, some of us are seriously training, some of us just want to get some outside exercise to gain/maintain physical fitness, and some of us commuting to work. Less cars on the road is always good.

no, I'm pretty sure he/she hates the bikers going all slow and taking up their time LoLz

what most of us see are bikers taking advantage of the law - blowing thru stop signs, red lights, yet acting like they are actual vehicles (which if was true, you'd be ticketed for impeding traffic going as slow as y'all do)

the WORST is when there is a bike lane and yet they still ride in the road - 123 is a PERFECT example of this, especially near Mason

pleasant ride, serious training, commuting to work - that's all fine - but to act like a bike is a good idea on Clifton Rd or Georgetown Pike (two places I've seen cyclists on recently) is just butt-stupid

Bikers act like bikers when it is advantageous to them and then like cars when it is advantageous to them.

Act like a car = the road belongs to everyone, therefore we can ride in the middle of the road (because we cannot ride on a sidewalk).

Act like a bike = stop at a red light? We do not have to stop at red lights because we are not cars.

This is my biggest gripe, too. They bitch and moan about "sharing the road" every chance they get, and their definition of that bumper sticker slogan is "we have the right to do whatever we want."

In a perfect Fairfax, cyclists should be able to train or enjoy a nice ride on their bicycles, while motorists drive unaffected by the presence of the bikes sharing the road.
But the reality is that these cyclists are in real danger from the bigger, faster vehicles. And these motherfuckers on the phone or otherwise distracted are dangerous enough to other big vehicles . Bikes and pedestrians don't stand a chance.
Maybe these bike riders have a perfect right to be on the road, but being right isn't much consolation when you're in traction, in a coma or dead.
And the attitude of some of the bikers, like the ones in the video's , make feeling any sympathy for them very difficult.

It's tough for me to have sympathy for "sharing the road" with bikers when they break all the rules of the roads. Like not stopping at intersections and blowing through stop signs.

Try a bike path. That is what they are made for.

Everyone, learn how to door a bicyclist. If you are parallel parked and you have a bicyclist coming up on your side, swing open your door at the right moment for the lulz.

Maybe for you lard @sses who can't pedal a bicycle for a city block, let alone up a freaking hill.

I can also see why no one wants to bike with all your lard @sses on the road who can barely drive, text, and hold your liquor at the same time.

Most of us don't shave our legs, and we frequently reach the speed limit on downhills. Also, most of us ride on bike trails or on the right side of the road, allowing motorists to safely pass.

Unfortunately there are some of us who ignore the traffic laws, and they should be ticketed if caught.

Can't speak for the bike lane on 123 near Mason, but I agree that some roads should not be ridden by cyclists - you cite a couple of good examples, and I'll add Hunter Mill Rd. to the mix. Personally, I stay on wide roads with shoulders, usually double laned each way - gives plenty of room for motorists to pass.
