Making way too big a deal out of it. Make them clean it up, give them an in school suspension and be done with it. 90% of the senior class did nothing, don't punish them for a handfull of knuckleheads' mistakes.

It's good clean fun for the kids - the custodial and food service folks don't think so, however.

Get the bill of all the damages and cleaning services and bill the parents of those involved. That'll solve the problem and incite parents to take their own action. Cancelling senior events or suspending students is too severe for this late in the year, especially when the majority of seniors did not participate.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Shortly after 1:00 pm today, a major disturbance was initiated in our school’s cafeteria. A significant food fight was started by a group of senior students which escalated into involving groups of students from all grade levels in the cafeteria during C lunch. There were a few minor injuries resulting from this incident. Simultaneously, someone pulled a fire alarm disrupting our educational process for a period of time this afternoon.

At this time, ALL senior activities including the senior picnic, senior trip to Hershey Park and the Senior Prom are on hold until we complete our investigation of the incidents today. All students involved are facing consequences from the school and some may also face criminal charges from Fairfax County Police. School Resource Officer Plazio is leading our investigation in this matter. This is a very serious matter and senior pranks will not be tolerated in our building.

The West Springfield High School Administration is committed to providing a safe environment for all students and staff. Please have a conversation with your children tonight about their role in maintaining a safe environment at school. We are thankful that the majority of the students did not participate in this incident. Again, our number one priority is the safety and security of the students and staff while they are at school.

If you have any questions, please contact your student’s grade level administrator or me at (703) 913-3800.

Sincerely,

Paul A. Wardinski
Principal

Fair or Foul?

A Division I soccer player was dismissed from the West Springfield girls varsity soccer team today due to her involvement (or simple presence) in today's events.

Throw her talent and being an asset to the team out the window, we are talking about ending someone's high school athletic career because they were just there when a situation broke out.

I have no opinion on West Springfield administration and was not in the cafeteria today so I do not know the full story but I see suspending her one game or giving her an in school suspension or Saturday school as a more fitting punishment. She was one of many involved and kicking her off of her team when others will receive lesser punishments does not seem fair.

Maybe I am immature or I just remember what it's like to be 18...

It was clear that what went down today was known by administration. Many (not so smart) students posted this on Facebook last evening and it was known by morning to school officials that something was going to happen at lunch time.

The principal stated that many special education students were emotionally injured as well as one that was physically injured. My question to PAW is if they knew about this food fight (as they obviously did), Why did they not bring the SPED kids to the Lunch that day, and simply have them eat in their classroom?

On a completely separate note, many seniors planned to drop water balloons on students and staff as they left the building for a previously planned fire drill that morning. What was the administration's plan to prevent such things from occurring had this "false alarm" at lunch time not occurred?

There are many unsettling questions, and it is clear that the school did not know how to handle multiple emergency situations at once, and in my humble opinion, showed students how unprepared they really are. If anything, this will encourage more events like this to transpire in the future.

Do they have a "lunch cam"?

That would make great TV.

You know a kid taped it on his cell phone.

Punishment should be eating the cafeteria food for the rest of the year.

Maybe these kids have been reading all The Wash Post articles about the zero tolerance garbage policies. Maybe they have no respect for authority anymore. This school district has habitually suspended students far excessively relevant to the infractions.

Hayley, the 7th grader who had allergy meds in her locker and was kicked out of school for 4 months.......4 months. Then sent to another middle school because she is considered to be such a threat to society.

Josh Anderson and Nick Stuban are DEAD because of these monsters.

Why the hell should these kids respect the adults in our schools?

This school district is poison to kids.

I go to a private out-of-state college, and my AP credits knocked most of the Gen-Ed curriculum out of the way. It really helps. Even if the kids retake the test, it is really a pain to prepare for the same test twice. They're probably stressed out enough as it is.

I honestly think they don't tell people the risks involved with pranks like this. Kids think you're SUPPOSED to do a senior prank, and everyone sees food fights in movies. They don't know that having a food fight can lead to serious punishments like this. Threatening to cancel prom just makes the administration look like villains, and I have no idea why they'd want that.

I remember one time in high school someone threw a scoop of mashed potatoes at a guy. It flew clear across the room like a snowball and caught a dude right in the back of the head.

Not only did the food fight involve students in each grade, but the administrators were all aware of the fight before it occurred. Yet the entire senior class is being punished for the actions of a handful of students, who were never warned of the possible criminal charges among other consequences.

Being a student in Fairfax County is absolutely terrible. As a senior, I can't wait to get away from all the up-tight authority members that are still butthurt about being hit with food back in high school. They need to stop crying over spilled milk.
More kids were harmed from being thrown by Mr Ukulele out the door than were harmed in the actual fight. And as for the FLEX class - They were throwing food too!

Down with the Warden.

The school needs to learn on how not to overreact.

Only the kids involved should be punished.

Maybe they need to help clean the schools on Saturdays and have after school detention.

To even suggest that the school may cancel the prom is cruel to the kids who were not involved.

It was really fun watching it...and all the seniors shouldn't have to suffer for one person's actions.

This is a ridiculous overreaction. The administration knew ahead of time or they should have, it was posted publicly. This shows a lack of administrative/leadership skill and is escalating over something that most of us have participated in as high school students. Isnt it a felony to pull a false alarm??? They have one sided justice and care more for the custodians than the students.

Listen, somebody has to care for the custodians. You are not better than they are. Equal in the eyes of justice. Justice is about meting out consequences to those who have done wrong. It is about making the victims whole. The custodians did not do wrong---some students did. Those students who did wrong deserve consequences. Someone will have to pay for the AP students to get "retake" tests---at $75 a pop. That will probably run into the thousands of dollars (not to mention the rescheduling headache). That could be one of the consequences for whomever pulled the fire alarm. Sending the firetrucks costs money as well (and the fire department will charge for that as well in a case like this). Custodians had to be pulled from other duties to clean up the mess. That may have required overtime for them (in order to get their regular jobs done later). Overtime costs money. The students involved need to pay for that.

Of course there was an overreaction. I'm sure it will all be rectified soon and the ones involved will get their "due". Was it wrong to react that way? Probably. However, the administration over there cares a heck of a lot about that school and the reaction shows a certain amount of passion for their jobs. That is not a bad thing. They take their jobs seriously. Now I hope that the students take their school seriously and show some respect for it (and for the staff there). The administrators were truly hurt by what the students did. They support you and work hard for you. Start acting like you appreciate them.

Why punish all senoirs for the food fight. My son eats out doors with his lunch. How many senoirs fit inside the lunch room? How many seniors do you have in the school? Not all senoirs did this!!

The ones who were involved in the food fight, should get punished. Not all the seniors who were not in the school at that time.

Taking Prom away is a Knee jerk reaction to this problem.

Have the crime fit the punishment.

My son just had 3 AP test (4 hrs. long) and was looking forward to prom.

Your son knew about it and did nothing to stop it. Those who knew are just as guilty and should be ashamed of themselves.

These students don't deserve a prom, with actions like this comes consequences. There's no denying this was organized by the seniors no matter who else participated. That shit don't fly in FCPS and you know it. Shame on you for being an enabler, shame on you.

They cancelled prom? Total overreaction by the school. It's sad that students can't step outside the box anymore. Detention is the maximum punishment the kids should get. Anymore than that is a joke. Public schools really suck these days.

Isnt calling the police for a food fight over reaction? Unless something is missing from the story, food was being thrown back and forth by students, some not all participating.

Ok maybe a chair got knocked over or a tray thrown but it appears to lack criminal intent which is what the police are for. I just wonder what this principal would do if a real emergency would happen if he is overwhelmed by a food fight.

a) there's a hold on activities, according to the news - nothing has been cancelled.

b) ppl were actully INJURED in this fight - not yr typical food fight

c) I'm sure the prom is gonna happen - sounds like the pricipal is just making sure the kids know he's effing serious about not having crap like this happen again

Hopefully you have been following the many articles about the abusive practices by FCPS officials in discipline cases. Often there are excessive punishments leading to sometimes months of no school for kids.

If your child was involved in this food fight do not assume that they will be treated fairly by the administration and don't expect a reasonable punishment.

Advise your child to say nothing. Tell your kid not to sign any statement whatsoever.

You saw the principal's email. Since when is it fair or reasonable to punish 550 students because of the actions of a few?

Group punishments as a form of discipline are prohibited in MOST school districts.

Parents-you need to be very proactive in preventing your kid from being put thru the meat grinder called FCPS discipline.

Clearly the admins need to be replaced with more competent people. Start with the principal and go all the way down to the SRO. They are a bunch of overpaid-reactive-job-protecting individuals who deserve to get fired for non performance! This over-reaction is just mind-blowing. Punish the whole class? You've got to be kidding me!

Honestly I have no confidence in the FCPS system. They seem to lack any kind of common sense when it comes to handing even minor issues. Instead they have a rigid set of guidelines and cannot make a decision otherwise.

The bottom line with everything that happens is intent. It doesnt look like the kids did this to overthrow the government or conduct some other type of crime while the staff was busy quelling the food fight. Get over it.

If your kid was involved in this in any way, brace yourselves. There is no fairness in the process. If a finger is pointed your way, YOU ARE GUILTY!

This advice is so important, it is well worth repeating: "Advise your child to say nothing. Tell your kid not to sign any statement whatsoever."

Hopefully, the admins didn't get hold of your kid before you have a chance to talk to your kid first. Kids will make and sign untrue statements out of fear. The SRO at WHSH is especially fond of bringing criminal charges for minor things...so please have a talk with your kids if they were anywhere near the food fight.

People were injured? Really? How many kids are in the Hospital or went to the hospital? Puhleeeeze! Show me the incident report of the injusry reports and I will take it all back.

Jimmy caught a pickle in the eye and Nancy got Hummus in her ear, it was horrible! Someone was impaled on a carrot stick and almost, almost felt like they may have to throw up. I tell you, it was hell.

+1......I would add that the prom, field trip and other senior activities are being used as leverage to coerce students to talk or sign.

Kids do dumb shit. Waaahhhh...there's muffins on the floor. Waaahhhh...theres's puddles of milk. Waaaahhhh....some kids got a bump on the head from a corn cob.

Pay the custodians some overtime, ban the instigators from prom or graduation and call it a fucking day.

Some kid was caught bringing a knife to school at Cooper Middle School a few weeks ago. His parents are well to do so the Principal only gave him after school detention initially. A few teachers made a stink and the cops were called - THEN he was suspended.

The principle has a lot of control in these situations, they can decide that this wasn't a big deal or they can make it into something huge, their discretion. Let's just hope they use some commen sense and discretion (good luck with that!)

Since this principle decided to pull a fire alarm for a food fight, I am guessing he is an over-reactor. Cancelling prom initially? I expect the panic button will be pressed on this incident. I have little hope that common sense will prvail when you have an Administration such as Jack Dale's at the helm.

It's non story. Your real story should be how it seems that WSHS administration can't figure out how keep a minor "dumb kid" issue from escalating with their knee jerk reactionary threats that would punish the whole class instead of the assclowns in C lunch.

Thank god my one kid is almost out of the school system. If I can just get my other one through without getting caught up in the school system's retarded management.

Like I said in the other thread on this, I hope that the principal faces prosecution if it turns out that he pulled the fire alarm as some are reporting.

Further proof Fairfax Underground drives the news cycle.

"Yet the entire senior class is being punished for the actions of a handful of students, who were never warned of the possible criminal charges among other consequences."

Are you fucking kidding me? So now you want to be warned about the consequences before you commit the act?

So when a male teacher is about to sleep with an underage female student there should be someone there to pop-up and say "Hey, if you stick that penis in that tight young vagina there will be consequences. Remember 15 will get you 30."

Fuck that, ignorance is not a defense. No one is going to follow your, I was brought up in FFX County with a sense of entitlement. ass around and inform you of the consequences of your actions.

Well if you ask me, it is better to have them tossing food as opposed to tossing off. You know how many issues of National Geographic my grandson has stolen from me? If it has an article on indigenous tribes with photos, it disappears when he comes over.

Reality dose, I completely agree that the students could have taken actions to try to stop the food fight HOWEVER it is a well known FCPS rule that if you try to defend yourself in a fight, or try to stop a fight, you are considered involved and are punished as if you start a fight.

This morning, the principal's designee (NOT the principle) came on to the intercom and stated "shame on the students who were in the cafeteria at the time of this incident watching"

Are we creating a double standard, or is it just me?

Yeah, that rule about defending yourself is idiotic. The only way to avoid getting in trouble for a fight is if you stand there with your hands behind your back and let the other guy pummel you. If I have any kids in FCPS they will be told that if someone starts a fight with you you defend yourself and we'll deal with the school later.

a grown man sleeping with a young teen is hardly comparable to a food fight, one is a serious crime while the other his a harmless annoyance that breaks a school rule. clearly having sex with a student regardless of age is against many laws and at least once a year you hear about something like that in the news, but how often do you hear about a high school food fight where they try to arrest kids for it? ignorance is not an excuse but it should be considered for leniency what is prosecuting or expelling anyone going to do now except make their unnecessarily difficult. I dont understand why FCPS thinks the only way to help kids is to fuck a few of them over. making of examples of people does not work because it always happens again
