does anyone know why 50% in the sol tests =400? Why does they only need half of the answers right in order to pass the sol test? Do they want the students to learn something or do they just want to tell DOE that everyone can pass the test? "IS OUR STUDENTS LEARNING"

It is out of 50. They have field questions that are not counted. The students need to get a 35/50 to pass or a 70% which is a C.

where does it say they need 35/50 to pass if you click on the link it says 25/50 = a raw score of 401. and 70 D+ not a C. Please tell me your not teaching our children

Here is the FCPS grading scale. A 70% is a C-

Standards of Learning Tests

SOL Test Fail/Basic Pass/Proficient Pass/Advanced

Grade 3
English: Reading

13 out of 35 items Fail

23 out of 35 items Basic Pass

31 out of 35 items Pass/Advanced

23 out of 35 is 65.7% and is a PASS

31 out of 35 is 88.5% and is advanced

What is between 13 and 35???

I find this confusing.

I guess we are both right. I showed you the raw score for Biology SOL. EOC Test. and it says 25/50, But the one you showed me the link to was 70%.

My son's third grade teacher is teaching her first year. She is not young and has experience in the corporate world.

She has turned into a freak over the SOL's. Sheets and sheets come home to study. I now they will use the test to compare her with others teacher's so she is worried about how she will look.

She is stressing out the whole class. Thank god my son is smart and goes to a good school but I do not agree with this.

Why not give out the test from an outside company on some random day and see what they really know.

There are 2 levels of fail...basic and below basic....12 and below would be below basic....13-22 would be basic

In the elementary grades, grades 3-6 take the SOL tests. In grade 3, for example, there is one test each for science, math, reading, and social science.

In these grade levels the students do not have to repeat a year if they don't pass the SOL test(s).

I teach at a high school. I teach social studies. Our passing score is 29 out of 60. The test is 70 questions long; 10 field test questions. The pass advanced score is 39 out of 60. Scores for math/reading/english/science are about 5 points higher to passing but still standards are quite low.

I gave a practice exam today to get my students focused on prepping. Since my standards are higher, I consider anything less than 70% to be a fail even though I know if they got 60% right on the actual SOL, they would still pass.

Teachers only freak out about SOLs because it's pretty much all that matters to the people in the cushy offices in our buildings and the people at Gatehouse. Most of us, would rather teach kids about our subject and help them learn to be successful in the real world...instead teach curriculums that are a mile wide and an inch deep and super cram for 2.5 weeks in May to make sure we meet the schools AYP.

Just remember by 2014...100% of all students should be passing all the tests; you think there's stress now try being a kid in the classroom then.

You know what is hilarious?

Jack Dale and these bozos on the School Board fought tooth and nail against Fairgrade and their efforts to align and lower the grading scale from a 7point to a 10 point scale.

Gibson and Dale were outraged at the idea because FCPS has such high standards.

Now as I look at the pathetic low bar of these SOL cut scores....67 percent is passing?

So how come these same believers in higher standarsds aren't lobbying Richmond to raise the pass rates?

How come when they are being judged they want a low bar?

Try to find a teacher or administrator not freaked out about SOL's. They all risk losing their jobs if they miss a minimum pass. Oh and the standards get tougher each year.

In some cases it has stalled learning for the average and above average students for the sake of dragging the slower learners up. No one cares about the kids that are languishing in boredom all the money is in bringing up the people for whom the bill was written (little George Bush JR.)

The best teachers don't review for the SOL at all. They just let the chips fall. My son was lucky to have a Biology teacher like that. He passed the SOL with no review. The teacher spent her time teaching real stuff and didn't even mention the SOL---just gave it on the assigned day---but I'm afraid she's an anomaly in the system. His other teachers spent weeks reviewing for the SOL and the weird thing is that those were probably his "easier" classes anyway.

What stinks is when a student fails because he didn't bubble the scan form correctly. Last year a 9 year old student in my class skipped a problem early on during the test. It threw the rest of his answers off and he ended up with a score in the 200s. He should have easily passed. We are supposed to write down irregularities and luckily I had written down what I had observed that day. When over the summer the parent questioned why her son had done so poorly, the AP was able to look back at my note and explain that he had bubbled the form incorrectly.

Nope. They have to shade in all the little circles with a #2. We aren't allowed to help them if we notice that they are off a question (example, answering #12 on line #13).

We do our report cards the same way too. I can't tell you how many "bubbles" I have to shade in each quarter.

High school/middle school sols are online...maybe now elementary are but they've been paper pencil since the beginning...middle school and high school grading is all electronic now as well...strikes me that elementary is still doing everything the old way...

doesn't matter much since fcps is getting a new grade program so you helicopter parents can constantly check your kids grade and send emails demanding to know why the teacher hasn't put in a grade for the essay they just finished writing 15 minutes before you sent the email...and yes parents really do this to teachers...no offense but your kid is not the most specialest ever and essay/project grading takes time if you want it done right.

Teachers love to complain. I should know since I have a couple in my own family.

Find some work you love and let the good teachers teach.

I am not a helicopter parent but I know all parents get treated like they are by unhappy teachers.

BTW: The gossip you all spread about each other, parents and staff is down right shameful. Where I work we are too busy for it.

Gossip about what each other the students the administrative staff the parents...oh my god parish the thought that these people engage in conversation with one another.

What's it feel like to be Jesus then? Do you go to work and just sit in your cube or on your phone or at your desk in your own little world for eight hours totally devoid of human contact...or do you converse with most of the people in the office and specifically a handful of individuals with which you share some knowledge about big shit going down...talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

You parents who seem so concerned about your sons/daughters should come to school and spend the day with the teachers. You have no idea the demands placed upon us. Good luck trying to dictate to college professors why your child should receive special treatment. We are raising a society of students who cannot think for themselves or take responsibility for their actions. Parents are failing miserably.

I would hope most kids could easily pass the SOLs, but at times things happen, some kids do not test well and there are the few that really need help and may not pass.

I could care less about the SOL as I do not see these tests as a real world metric for anything other than politicians and bureaucrat.

I want my kids to have a set of skills and the ability to think and reason rather than to have memorized a bunch of crap. Life is not a quiz show, there is not always a single answer or a single way to solve an issue. Most of these over achiving FCPS students could get lost in the woods 1 block from home and would panic and never figure out how to formulate a plan to solve the problem of the hour and make it home before dinner.

Life for most of us shmucks that can barely pay our property taxes in FFX is about dealing with one problem after another on a daily basis. Having a bag a crap dropped in your lap and having to come up with a solution without anyone helping you. Many times there is no right answer in life, it is the best outcome when there appears to me no good solution. Many times there are many "right" answers, some better than others.

My kids have had some outstanding FCPS teachers, but my kids have had some aweful FCPS teachers that have ruined the kids moral, interest in the subjects and have made certain years just aweful for not only my kids but others in the class as well. We are of the few that will actually speak our mind when there are problems with teachers as we look at it this way, how can they retaliate against my kids when they are already failing them as teachers. End up getting one of my kids Elemenatary school teachers fired after half way through the year when it was crystal clear the teacher was not teaching, making up grades, not updating Blackboard, not returning any graded work, stating that all the kids were doing great at parent/teacher conferneces. Even the school administration was backing this teacher up and it was not until we turned up the heat on the situation did things start to happen. The teacher was not doing their job and should not have been protected. If I performed that poorly I would have been let go from a job long befoe this teacher had a fire lit under them. There are WAY too many parents that should speak up and don't with major problems, but whine and complain all day long that Johnny got a B when they should be getting an A. Deal with the real problems and everyones situation will improve!

All this No Child Left Behind, Mainstreaming Special Ed kids when they are disruptive to the entire class, situations where over 50% of the class have IEP`s, the entire AAP/GT situaiton, large class sizes and whiny helicopter parents really makes for a crappy situation for all our students.

What many of these parents miss out one is failure and the University of Hard Knocks is really the best way to learn. Today so many parents are afraid of failure and do everything in their power to keep their kids from failing that these kids are getting set up for some major disappointments and problems later in life.

Parents these days fail to see that tranferring from a Manager to a Consultant somewhere around Middle School is a key factor in a childs development. Unfortunately so many parents these days are still Managing even into and beyond College!

The sooner we all understand that life is not a standardized test, the better off we will all be. Minimum standards are great, but they are not to be a target or end result.

@Oh Well: You are the voice of reason in an insane and absurd world. If all parents would stand up to this, we might have a chance of saving public education. As it is, the politicians are ruining it.

BTW, I think your children are lucky to have you as a parent. I wish you and them well.
