Even though the arrival of Santa was yesterday with the tree lighting and caroling, Reston Town Center is a very festive destination with outdoor ice skating, a Santa Claus, restaurants like Clyde's with windows overlooking the iceskating, a great display of gingerbread houses in the lobby of the Hyatt, and some places to grab a drink (McCormick and Schmick's) or a hot chocolate. It's nicely decorated with a big tree on the main drag. It's fun just to window shop or catch a movie.
Wolftrap's annual Christmas singalong on Sunday afternoon on December 2nd is also a great tradition to put you in the spirit. It's outside, so bring a blanket. You are allowed to bring in your own refreshments too if I remember correctly.

I've been to see the lights at Bull Run a couple of times. It's a lot of lights, but much of it isn't even related to Christmas. I'm more impressed with folks who go to great lengths to light up the outside of their houses and yards. I'd love to hear recommendations of homes like this. List 'em if you know of any.
There is one place at the intersection of Memorial Drive and King's Highway in the Alexandria area that does a good job. The best part is the train that gives neighborhood kids around the yard.

The National Christmas Tree down at the White House is always pretty cool if you're looking to do something xmas-y. They have alot of other trees there too, one for each state, decorated according to the region. It's not like it's something I'm really into, but it's sort of a neat place to go, especially if you're looking to avoid stuff that revolves around the commercial aspect of xmas.

The best house I've seen is on Miniature Lane in Greenbriar, they always put it up in early December though, so next week sometime it should be set up, then the neighbors of the house usually do a pretty good setup and it looks neat together.
The other setup I like is along Meville in the Popular Tree neighborhood, near the elementary school. I know the people personally, and they really put alot of lights up but its usually white lights, I'm more of a color guy mysel

there used to be a great house in springfield off pohick road (between the parkway and gambrill) I would imagine with the kind of investment they made in that junk that it's probly still there in some incarnation. If you took a right onto pohick off gambrill it would be the first street on the right, I believe.
