It has a like private school system, near metro, wonderful restaurants, nice homes, and it is near DC.

A true diamond amid the rough.

You would not know it by route 7 or Lee Hwy. Plus home values did not go down.

They also listed Fairfax City as one of the wealthiest counties, along with Falls Church...

I think the confusion lies in the fact Virginia is the only state in the entire country that considers cities separate entities from counties. The editors over at Forbes overlooked this small detail.

Eh, a couple other places do it that way. Baltimore being the prime example.

You should see the article about the best places to retire to. Bad advice.

None of the writers have even been to Nova.

They are cluster fucks.

How do they make money?

They even list it in the slide show as "Fairfax City County, VA".

No dummy...

....there are three other independent cities in the USA that aren't in Virginia. Our state is the only one in the entire nation that distinguishes between cities and counties. The three independent cities outside of Virginia were made independent because they were considered too large to be run by counties.

The other two are St Louis and Carson City.

Is that like the Money Magazine article which listed great places like "Hunter Mill, Virginia" and "Trap, Virginia"?

New Jersey is a piece of shit (except for the area around Fort Monmouth, I love Monmouth.) Those New England states have some really weird organizational setups for their local governments.

townships and all that still base themselves on the county.

The towns of VA do the same

the cites of VA, however, are their own political entities

here's more on it

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_subdivisions_of_Virginia

you'd think the editors of Forbes could have bothered to read this, y'know?

I've never understood that for as rich as city as Falls Church is, how the entire main corridor on Route 7 is so unappealing. I mean, it's not run-down and terrible, but it's certainly nothing special.

By my count there are 3143 counties, parishes, or independent cities in the USA. Forbes considers the independent cities as equivalent to counties and parishes, since they are self governing entities who collect their own taxes and have their own school systems, police, and social services.

Or because they were so stuck up they wanted to secede from the county. Fairfax still only has a little of 20K people, and I'd bet they didn't even have 10K in 61 when it was made independent.

Turns out that there is also one independent city in Nevada.

Nader Baroukh, the mayor of Falls Church, is not shying away from the designation of being the richest, but he does disagree with one of the U.S. Census' conclusions. "We are actually a city and not a county, but I can't comment on how the Census puts its data together," says Baroukh. "We are a small jurisdiction, about 2.2 square miles, and I think given our location it's a very attractive place to live and our top schools are one of the big attractions."

It is evidently the Census Bureau that made the call.

Reading - it is a good thing.

My head hurts like a bitch and I'm having some chest pains; however, regardless of my condition, I've set to sea!
