Hope there is a way to drop the contract for drug abuse.

It isn't news-worthy as it pertains to westfield unless it involves drugs and/or murder. But since this is the NFL we're talking about I'm sure one of the two will turn up in this kid's future eventually.

Kid says his dream was to play for the redskins...way to aim low. WHS fails another youth.

A WHS grad who used to work in our office said that Eddie Royal was very cool and friendly to everyone in HS but that Royster was pretty much a dick. Anyone else from WHS during those days share that sentiment?

I played for Oakton during this time, and we played Westfields w/ Royster a few times. The kid was a beast. I can't say much for how he was off the field, but I know that his mom was very involved in the school system, so I think he was pretty much going on the right path...

They better put a Heroin clause in his contract

Always heard he was a solid guy. Good student, good work ethic.

EDIT:

He really should have stuck to lacrosse though.

Royster has always been a solid player. He will get tough yards and was a very reliable back for Penn State. He had no character issues there. While injuries/# of carries may start to catch up to him, he is a a solid addition to any team in the 6th round of the draft.

I know right. He was so much better at Lacrosse. If he woulda stuck with it, he woulda been a LEGEND in high school. Possibly got a scholarship to college, and became a professional Lacrosse player making a whopping 14k a year!

At least he was smart enough to make that decision.

P.S. Due to the local factor, I followed him a bit at Penn St. The majority of his yards would come against the weak competition. Against the better Big 10 opponents, he would rush 20 times for like 60 yards. Games where he reached 100 would take him 25-30 carries. That's pretty weak in college. Roy Helu Jr. averaged 7 YPC in the big 12. Denard Robinson broke 60-80 yards multiple times on one run in Royster's conference.

^^^^

As for only getting majority of his yards vs weaker competition?

He did set the all-time rushing yards record at Penn St. That is quite an accomplisment. He had some consistency throughout the years, can't knack a guy for breaking records at one of the best college football schools in history!!

He could've got a full ride to UVA, Hopkins, or Duke from lacrosse... then gotten a real job. May have offered more security than a Redskins contract.

Of course my point is moot if he actually succeeds in the NFL. Only time will tell

AT PENN STATE HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE QUITE LIKE EVAN ROYSTER, WHICH may help explain why, for years now, he has been drawing comparisons with the ultimate running back (and perhaps the ultimate original), Jim Brown. Like Brown, Royster was a prodigious football talent in high school, rushing for a career 6,384 yards and 90 touchdowns on 750 carries at Westfield (Va.) High. Also like Brown, he was just as prolific on the lacrosse pitch. As a senior Royster scored 33 goals and earned an invitation to play in the North-South All-America game. Johns Hopkins and Virginia were among the lacrosse powerhouses desperate to sign Royster to a letter of intent.

This is great news for Westfields. Name the sports arena after him there. Have him visit. Add school spirit and then everyone will be happy. This is a great day in Westfield sports history.

Not sure who this Andrew Lawrence guy is that wrote this article, but comparing Evan Royster to Jim Brown? Give me a fucking break! Guy must have graduated from Penn State and now is jumping on Royster's jock.

We know your not from Oakton. Royster never beat Oakton in a game that mattered. Oakton beat him up in his junior and senior year playoff games. Royster was a great high school player, and the Northern Region wishes him luck.

I grew up in Cleveland, when Jim Brown was playing. So, yeah, he might have exaggerated a little... But, Royster was a stud.

Westfield's o-line was small those years. Oakton had some big guys on the line and the playoff games turned into grind it out, make your own holes games. Royster wasn't a particularly big back, so wasn't as effective in that kind of game. Payne from Oakton was...

OTOH, when there was a hole, Royster was gone.

we must have been at the same game - i remember thinking Payne was light years ahead of Royster, although I didnt think Payne would do well in college because he was a big strong back who liked to make people miss instead of using his size/strength. he finally started doing that this year. I wish Royster the best of luck, i'm just kind of surprised he has done as well as he had.

Royster is too slow and has lousy lateral cutting ability. He will probably not make the team.

That is all true but not quite complete. Rotated is also not especially big, is an below average receiver out of the backfield and is a lazy blocker. This kid has had his day, and he has no chance to make the team.
