Crash westbound I66 just prior to the Fairfax County Parkway. All lanes of I66 are completely blocked. Traffic will be diverted from I66 westbound onto Rt50. This closure could remain in effect for several hours. Motorists are advised to find alternate routes. Virginia State Police will be investigating the crash.

What do you mean rarely. 66 was just closed about two weeks ago. The new rule seems to close any road if there is as little as a piece of gum on it.

I remember the days when police had the car moved off the road in minutes or officers would direct traffic around the blocked lane. Now they just shut off the entire road and roads near the accident. Complete BS.

Closing off the road is not complete BS. There are firefighter and police deaths every year, and many more injuries as well from being struck by drivers as they pass by the accident scene. If you've ever noticed, every accident has at least a fire engine blocking the scene. The apparatus positions so that if it's struck, it rotates away from the scene. Merely closing the lane or two involved isn't enough. We close any lane involved, plus one more on either side. Sometimes this results in closing the entire road. You can thank your fellow motorists for accelerating as soon as they see a bit of room as they pass the scene. I've had severral close calls, a few brushbacks, and so have many others. Not to mention the drunks.

Closing all the lanes of a major highway is not acceptable!!!! Learn how do traffic control instead of closing all the lanes so your lazy can stand around and chat.

If the fire department closes a road it's because lives are on the line and there's actual emergency work going on. You can thank the VSP for it being closed after that. But truthfully, they're doing their JOB just like you do (which someone probably bitches about THAT too...)
If you don't like it, makes vote to "unrequire" accident investigations. Fuck it! Let's just plow through the scene of a fatal accident because we all need to get to Gainesville. Let the buzzards do cleanup

If it were your family you'd probably want an investigation into what happened to cause that death. But then you'd be bitching, "wah wah my mommy is dead" or some bullshit.

People will bitch and moan about anything. Must be a stress reliever or something.

I ask others to explain why they do not live closer to work?

I would rather have a smaller home then sit in traffic.

You use the term accident; doubtful. It's more like a collision.. a set of dangerous decisions leading up to an event. An accident is something falling from the sky or something jumping into the road.

Living in DC was out of the question.

Most apts or condos close to work that I could afford would be too small.

When I got my small rambler the commute was not so bad.

It was not just about me, myself and I.

Work locations have changed over time.

An acceptable detour would have been rt 50 to 7100 back to 66. Cops could have directed traffic to get people thru the intersections faster, maybe set the lights to flashing yellow on 50. but of course they would not do this.

Why don't you write a letter to the police about how you wouldhave expertly handled diverting rush hour traffic so that no one is inconvenienced. Please, maybe they can learn from your ideas and no one woud ever have to sit in traffic again.

That's exactly what they were doing. Had a motorcycle cop controllng the light to exit Rt 50 West onto Rt 7100 South, then continuing to get back on 66 West.

WASHINGTON - A two-vehicle crash killed a South Carolina man and snarled traffic in northern Virginia Monday.

Virginia State Police say the crash happened on westbound Interstate 66 around 3:45 p.m. when the driver of a BMW lost control of his vehicle, crashed into a guardrail, then crossed back into traffic.

When crossing back into traffic, the BMW struck a Ford Explorer, causing the Explorer to flip several times.

The driver of the Explorer was not wearing a seat belt and was partially ejected from the SUV. He died at the scene of the crash.

The driver of the BMW was not injured. Virginia State Police say charges are pending.

Traffic was blocked on I-66 for the extent of the evening commute, with drivers being diverted onto Route 50.

Charges are pending:

1) aggressive driving,
2) speeding,
3) illegal lane changes, or
4) combination of at least two of the above.

Can not wait for the arrest report on the driver of this one.

Now that we have answered that, we should go to round two. Guess the nationality/ethnic background of the driver of the Beemer.

That would require police to get out their cruisers and actually do some work. It much easier to just put some cones out to block off a road and then sit at the accident chatting with some other cops.

This is the part to consider. The driver was "partially ejected" while the vehicle flipped "several times." That means he was stuck in the windshield as the vehicle rolled over him repeatedly.

Bleck!

Yes, it was very inconvenient. Took me 3 hours to get home due to traffic, but someone was killed. This wasn't over a breakdown or a flat tire. If you hate 66 so much, don't use it. I don't. the overflow is what affected me but someone was KILLED. Instead of thinking about how much traffic sucked, be glad the cops aren't knocking on your door to tell you your spouse/sig other/parent/child was killed in a freak accident.

I can guarantee you that when the BMW driver's name is posted, this thread will go epic.

Unfortunately, it would have already been epic - owing to the fact that the Explorer driver Darwined himself. But, since he is from South Carolina, his kinfolk probably are not accustomed to reading the Underground (at least not yet).

Considering that 66 is really the only highway leading westward into FFX Co, most of us don't have the option of "not using it.". And don't give me some crap about Route 50 or 29. Those aren't highways.

EDIT: The shitty part is that the guy in the SUV was the one who had to die. It should have been the BMW driver.

People die all the time in Fairfax county car accidents. Does this mean a major highway should be SHUTDOWN COMPLETELY during rush hour for 4 hours? NO! Two lanes could of easily been open to ease the gridlock that occurred.

How long does it take to snap some pictures and run a laser CAD of the scene? 15 minutes max! Not 4hours! I'm sure a tow truck and rescue was there with in 15 minutes and cleaning the scene was no more than 20 minutes..

Does anyone think he was drunk or just some jackass speeding and weaving between cars cause he's oh-so-cool and such an excellent driver? Maybe both I guess.

I own a Ford Expedition and you can't drive without having your seatbelt off as it dings every 5 seconds to let you know.

I always where my seatbelt and so does everyone in my family.

Maybe the dead guy was too fat to wear his seatbelt?

Does anyone know info about the other driver? I bet that stupid fuck was yakking on his cell phone. Of course the dead guy could have been too.

It is still the BMW drivers fault but you should wear a seatbelt.

The guy in the BMW was weaving in and out of traffic. I don't recall them saying he was on his cellphone,

Wonder if it was the same guy I saw over the weekend. Passed by me at about 80 weaving in and out. I said then, "Yup there's goes the next big accident."

Very sad...I work next to 66 and drive daily from Gainesville (why is Gainesville knocked on a few threads). Traffic and accidents have increased due to texting and cell phone use...Virginia needs to adopt DC cell phone use laws. I speed sometimes...this is a wake up call.

You can install a cell phone blocker on your car (your cell can still call 911) while your car is running. This is great if you have teenagers. Of course other teens in the car are a major distraction too but this helps.

well about a 1/4 of the adults need to install it on their cars...you would think the texters and cell phone users on i 66 and everywhere else are in the middle of a world crisis. I'm all for technology but the use in cars is so dangerous and I know it has crerated additional traffic due to the breaking and slow downs.Shame on you if you text, read emails, web browse while you drive...hopefully, our legislators will wake up.

In other words, you are not. I hope you know news of the accident was transmitted via non-911 messaging. While you are nannying people to death critical, life-saving information can't travel. You should also know your "magic blocker" extends beyond the frame of your car, how dare you support blocking my passengers from communicating information to roadway safety personnel!!!!

to URaNanny...all i'm saying is it should be illegal to text and drive...it should be a law to have hands free..texting, talking on cell phones and reading the PDA is danderous while driving...not to mention it creates gridlock...I'm for safety and any means of getting emergency personnel to a scene...but the majority of adults using their PDA's while driving is socialand/or business

+1, or get serious and make all speeding tickets of 10+ miles over have an automatic 10-day license suspension, doubling with every subsequent offense. If "50 means 50" then I can't see why "60 means no license" can't apply.

I think cars should have governors... there is absolutely zero reason why any passenger vehicle has to go faster than 80mph, the highest speed limit in the country.

Some get in a dither about firearms having "larger clips" than anyone would need for basic civilian use, yet spooge when they see a car that can go twice the nation's highest speed limit. With all the hypocrisy it is probably better to let Darwin sort the idiots out but I see no reason why non-professionals should be able to buy cars that go over 80mph, any more than non-military citizens and special ATF licensees can't buy fully-automatic weapons.

I wonder if the Beamer driver was this guy? Seems like the type to drive an older BMW and since he's all about DWI's, I'm sure his driving sucks overall.

Well, as you probably all know by now, the victim was from South Carolina. He was minding his own business when some spewing ANUS in a BMW decided he was better than everybody else and was weaving in and out of traffic. He lost control and hit a guardrail. He was thrown in front of, and hit an SUV returning home to South Carolina. Can you honestly say that you have never ridden in a car without a seatbelt? Authorities close the roadway so that they can conduct an investigation into a fatal crash. They do that so that the killed person's family CAN HAVE JUSTICE! I think a man's life is worth more than your lazy convenience for one STINKING day! How selfish you people are! I would feel that way, even if it were YOUR lifeless body laying under a white sheet in the middle of I66! I read this conversation with disgust and contempt! Not from everybody here, but from some! I think this board BELONGS underground! I won't be back! I hope that you people have learned something from this. Don't be so DAMN quick to draw conclusions without ANY knowledge, whatsoever! You just make yourselves look like complete FOOLS! "... Probably Gainesville Driver tailgating ..." how STUPID you look! Maybe you should know the FACTS before you start spouting nonsense! I am extremely offended by this thread. I am a service technician, and am constantly driving the roads of this area, and have been doing so for over 25 years. I have encountered MANY like that BMW driver. MOST unfortunately, they are FAR too common! I can see, very easily, how something like this could happen. I have nothing but sympathy for the poor soul who was this worthless waste of food's victim! as well as his family! BTW: If you have driven the streets of this area for any time at all, well, SO HAVE YOU! So ...

"Can you honestly say that you have never ridden in a car without a seatbelt?"

Actually, I never do. Not since I was a kid and it wasn't the law, anyway.

I put on a seatbelt and make my kids' put their belts on to drive down to the corner.

But I'm not going to blame the deceased for his actions. The fact that he's dead when he probably would have had a broken arm, leg or collarbone instead of fatal blunt force trauma is probably punishment enough.
