ok so when I was in school you would get into trouble if anyone saw you with your cell during school hours so why dose irving middle school have a cell tower?

What does one have to do with the other? My guess is the location is ideal for a cell tower, and the school system is more than happy to accept whatever type of payment they get from whatever carrier the tower belongs to.

I think a more pressing question is, just what happens to the revenue being generated through leasing out space, to install these cell phone towers on school property???

Cell towers make the owners big bucks. I wish someone would ask me to put one on my 5+ lot. They even look like trees.

Same reason Woodson does and a number of other locations. Money. The cell companies are paying to have towers there and the citizens want them so that their cell phone reception is good. Especially since so many are dropping their landlines and going with only cell services.

It is money. The cell companies pay sizeable sums of money to FCPS to erect an antenna and the associated equipment at school sites. They are chosen because they usually have pre-existing, free standing light towers that are 70 to 90 feet in height. This is a good height for localized coverage to either add cell capacity or to fill in a coverage gap.

It's a secret plot by Jack Dale to monitor all cell phone conversations in the county. A small part of his master plan to take over the world that also includes sharks with lasers.

The reason why this thread was started is because when I was in school (I even went to Irving for my MS) year every teacher would make a big deal about students with there phones and putting cell towers up near or on school property sure dose not solve the use of no cell phones during school hours.

Clearly your education in English was lacking. Students still cannot use cell phones during school. One has nothing to do with the other. The towers are for the entire community, not the students per se.

But then, when I went to school, we had smoking courts and it was still illegal for anyone under 18 to smoke.

Better question might be "why did FFXC name a school after Washington Irving?" Did some adminstrator type really like "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" or "Rip Van Winkle" a lot or something?

Excellent point. While they're taking down the cell tower, they should get also rid of the driveway in front of the school. Middle schoolers aren't allowed to drive, so why is it even there? Hypocrites!

Citizens have no ability to resist when a tower is erected at a school rather than community property. And as a school does not have the same interests as a human being, a school does not require much compensation.

Schools are not 'magically' located in all the best areas for cell phone reception, as some in this thread have argued. In fact many schools have multiple cell phone towers.

I have a friend that lives on 100 or so acres right by I-77 near the VA/NC line. A cell company wanted to build a tower on his land and offered him a $1300/mo long term lease.

You'd have thought he won the fucking lottery! He even quit his job.

If they're paying that much down there in the middle of nowhere, then they probably pay considerably more up here.

@Gordo:

So how do you explain Ormond Stone (astronomer, mathemetician, educator—but not exactly known for his poems or other writings)?

And we're just getting started: there's Liberty, Rocky Run, Herndon, Luther Jackson—and I'm not even counting the secondary schools.

At most schools, the principal's budget receives the money. But at Woodson, Tisdadt's Facilities people arranged for the tower to be placed near the gas pumps so Woodson receives nothing. If it was located 50 feet to the east it would have been Woodson's tower.
