Larranaga leaves

I find it incredibly disppointing, but not shocking, that George Mason would let Larranaga get away. As a former athlete for Mason, I am accustomed to the fact that they are hell bent on trying to do everything relating to athletics cheaply (they spend the most on sports like track, who gives a FUCK about track) and they really got lucky in stumbling upon a genius like Larranaga. You'd figure that they would do everything they could to keep a man that really, for all intents and purposes, put the school on the map, but no, they allow Miami to take him away.
Every time I look at that faggoty "center for the Arts" which hosts piano and orchestra recitals that no fucking college kid on earth will ever go to, I will remember where the school's priorities are extracurricularly. A crying shame.

Larranga has brought in more $$$$$ to Mason than the Center for the Arts will EVER manange to do

it does seem like the most stupid move on the Earth for GMU to allow this to happen

however, we dont know what Miami was willing to do to get him - I dunno...........

just seems stupid for GMU to let him go :(

It really isn't up to GMU in the end. The CAA isn't the ACC and Fairfax isn't Florida. It's possible they could have tried to match the money, but I doubt that would have changed the outcome.

It's a good move for him and expected.

WashingTon-Locian is exactly right. Miami threw way too much money at Larranaga for him to say no. GMU is NOT the same sports school as Miami, so GMU could not justify the salary increase required to keep him here.

To his credit, I'm sure Larranaga turned down numerous offers between 2006 and today, but like one article said that I read: Coach Larranaga is relatively old and Miami is a great place to retire....

Key points:

VCU pays Shaka $1.2 mill, Mason will not match.

L not happy with facility improvements and assistants' compensation

Mason AD and L have ego-clashes.

President Merten announces retirement.

U makes an offer (that L couldn't refuse).

After 2006, I seem to remember a few small schools being thrown around as potentially interested in him. I never heard of any big name schools. I would have to assume if a marquee program had knocked on his door, he would have answered sooner.

I would consider Providence a big program being in the Big East, definitely as big as Miami basketball, plus he was an alum of the school.

Good riddance.

Here was the alternative:

Damn fees are already too high.
