which restaurant is the abslute CLEANEST around here?

There are no clean restaurants. 99% of all restaurants have a issue with rodent infestation. I worked for the health department for years and most if not all restaurants knew when we were preforming inspections (the grapevine) and would otherwise fail our inspection. The only place one can assure themselves of a sanitary condition is their own kitchen. I dare you to ask to inspect the kitchen of the next restaurant you patronize, I bet you a dropping, I mean a dime to donuts they won't let you. The condition of the restaurant is one issue but the main problem is with the preparer. I have meet only a handful of cooks that I felt used proper food handling guidelines. Most cooks are short timers who have questionable work histories and usually include incarceration. Most restaurants don't require a security clearance and tattoos are not a hindrance. I if you are comfortable with a pony tailed, overweight, convicted felon who leaves fecal matter on their hand (most common violation) and who usually actually stinks (body odor) making your next burger or crab cake sandwich fine I'm not. I only eat at home or the home of a close friend where I can see (help) in the preparation process. I'm not phobic about this topic I have been in too many kitchens not to be affected by the allowable filth and uneducated food handlers. So moms and dads get off your ass and prepare a meal at home for your family and quit supporting these upscale fast food so called restaurants.

I always use this link, it covers the whole state. I have found that you have to be very careful around buffets, esp the Chinese ones. Since the bottom line is always money they tend to leave out food that should be tossed or they put it out the next day.

If you have never had food poisoning it will change your way of thinking. Two days in Fairfax Hospital was enough for me.

I have a pal that sells for an institutional grocer and is in restaurant kitchens every day.

He says all are filthy and some would gag a maggot.

I believe him and I don't eat out anywhere.

However, I don't fool myself that I don't ingest filth....food ingredient producers and grocery stores are gross too. I try to grow a lot of the stuff we eat in my garden...or buy from local producers that I know personally.

Thanks for posting this link. Im surprised at how many establishments I have
been to are frequently in "critical repeat" trouble. Seems even the higher
end have their problems.

Food poisoning is a bitch. I had to lay flat on my back for two days getting new IV fluid bags non stop. The doctor said it is tough to tell where you got it from since it is not always the last place you ate.

I am surprised when I check the health dept site how many have very serious violations and yet are still open. I cannot remember the name of the restaurant in Fairfax Circle but it was a Chinese buffet and had a huge amount of critical violations and was still open.

Even grocery produce is tough because it can come from other countries and they can irrigate the fields with sewer water and we have no way of knowing.

Was it Peter Pan? I went there once and it was very "ethnic". Lots of salty
stuff. Im a salt freak and they were too much for me. Glad this post is up.
Ive e-mailed the website for health violations to quite a few folks in
Fairfax today.

You read my mind. I did a quick check and that was it. 14 critical violations on the inspection August 2007. I have no idea what it takes to really get a place closed. I would imagine with the county being so big restaurants dont get checked very often. My gratitude to the people who do the inspections.

Make sure to actually read the reports before you go avoiding some restaurant. A lot of the "critical" violations aren't really that bad.

Space Ghost is correct. Things like "excessive ice build-up in the freezer" or "unlabled cleaning solution" are considered "critical" violations. So don't stop going to your favorite places just because it says 'critical', make sure you read it first.

I eat out a lot and I look at this site occassionally, there's only one place I won't return to based on what I've read on this site.

So true. I have looked at nearly every restaraunt we've gone to in the past
few years and guess what? They're ALL on it. Even the Army Navy Country Club
and some very high end establishments have had a few problems occasionally.
Ive also wondered how one in particular manages to stay open, now I know. When your ass sticks to the seat because its coated with cooking oil (and even the menu's too) its time to head to the Safeway and fix your own. Its been several years since I visited there and when the waitress brought my order she had a lit cigarette dangling out of her mouth. Ashes anyone? My son will not eat seafood of any kind and discovered that his fries had been cooked in the same oil as the fish sandwich I had ordered. But, they still stay in business. Go figger. Anyone care
to guess which one it is? Hint.. Its on Rt 50.

Congratulations!!!! You win the $1 Billion prize for guessing the right restaraunt.
BTW, If the 29 is so clean, why do they have so many citations? Hmmm....
Your check is in the mail. Watch for the postmark from Nigeria.

Yeah, this is pretty much bullshit. Not to say you should be scared of preparing meals at home or that it's impossible your kitchen isn't as clean or cleaner than one in a restaurant, but the potential for cross-contamination in a home kitchen is just as high and most households lack any sort of sanitizer for dishes and flatware.

What I want to know is....I read the health report and it will say "closed for rodent or varment infestation on Nov. 1 and re-opened the same day" How in the hell do they actually correct that problem in a matter of hours? Could there be some payola involved?

I have a friend that works for the health dept. and she says "if they are open, eat there" and then laughs. She has also said all are filty to a certain extent. Kind of like playing Russian rullet I guess...LoL

I try to steer clear of the buffets of all types. Just too many things mixed up and besides you have the riff raff from the public leaning in to sniff and handle the food. I have seen people take the food with their hands then sniff it and put it back. Sneeze guard my ass.

its called an immune system for a reason people. If you sanitize EVERYTHING completely then when you are exposed to the lil bit of germs when the bigger Badder germs attack your body will whimper in fear and capitulate like SKins did against the Patriots.

Sorry I just do not care to eat food where some slob has picked it up with his hands examined it, smelled it and then returned it to the tray. I agree with all the anti bacterial soaps we are setting up more powerful diseases to combat.

That is why the Mexicans can tolerate the water down there and we cannot. I remember a guy I worked with going to Cancun. He was warned over and over to only drink bottled water and bottled beer. To be PC he drank the water and let us know he was above any such sterotyping. He spent his vacation on the toilet and another week in the states on another toilet. Even Jimmy Carter the super liberal once talked about Montazumas revenge.
