A group of the residents in my community have been working with our HOA and have finally gotten all of the common area tot lot equipment replaced.
The existing equipment was made from CCA treated wood. The arsenic treatement was banned in 2003, but because the EPA did not mandate that all the treated wood be replaced, a lot of it is still around.
I am posting this because I want to make sure you all know that the CCA treated wood still exists and can pose a threat to anyone who touches it and does not wash their hands afterward (the transmission of the arsenic is hand to mouth) which is basically CHILDREN.
Take a look at this:

Even though it is stated that if you deep treat the wood ANNUALLY, the transmission is reduced, please know that does not STOP it. Any of you who have children, please take note and make sure you protect them from decks, playground equipment, fences, etc built before 2003. I have nieces and nephews that visit me, and 4 months ago I had my deck COATED - so I know they will be safe even though they wash their hands when they come inside.
Take care..
