Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Anyone know what happened? We all heard sirens for a solid 20 minutes and the smoke and smell of burning rubber was strong and thick through the neighborhood I live in. Hope everyone made it out alive.
I think a semi caught fire. I was heading from Springfield towards Old Town tonight and traffic was down to 1 lane for accident clean -up, took Franconia, at WTOP's suggestion.
well that would definitely explain the smoke and smell!! Amazing how the cars continue to drive around, would be worried it would explode. I heard the driver made it out okay. I hope that is true.
Do they even have hydrants along the highways, or do they have to use tankers most of the time?

They have hydrants, but depending on the hydrant locations, you may have to lay a lot of line down to get to the hydrant. Most engines will have a ready reserve of water - 500 to 750 gallon - in the tank. That gets used first until the hydrant lines are charged and ready to supply extra water.
Of course with a fire like that, they may also have wanted foam to deal with any excess fuel.
