(Sun. 4/17) 50 means 50, really out on the Fairfax Parkway!

Went out for a morning drive to Fair Lakes and saw a few FCPD marked and unmarked Crown Vics on 7100. Some had customers...

On the drive back, teams were set up in the neighborhood turn-ins from 123, south. All had customers!!!

I had to drop from 6th to 5th, as 50 felt like I was crawling!!!

Since I was in 5th, I was turning 1,600 rpm @ 50 vs. 1,200 rpm in 6th - Great side benefit of the program, 50 means I burn more fuel. Ohh well...

No, just a Sunday update. The other two threads were pretty full of FCPD bashing and empty coffer-talk...

tell that to the families of the FOURTEEN DEAD.........................

p.s right after the 123 ramp heading Southbound - at Fred's Oak (the Burke Centre Library intersection), they are sitting in wait as we speak

Bring them to me and I will tell them. The article did not link speeding to increased fatalities, but seemed to imply 'aggressive driving' as the culprit. Aggressive driving does not necessarily imply speeding. It is entirely possible to drive like a jackass and abide by the limits.

...I am still concerned over the fact I now must drive in 5th gear, wasting fuel as a result of this.

I just returned from a trip where in Utah and Texas, the speed limits were 80 MPH. Texas is considering 85 MPH in western portions of the state.

Granted, the western part of our county isn't quite the same however, the road itself seems safe at 65 MPH. And I bet if the speed limit were 65 mph, traffic would average very close to that.

Set artificial speed limits and drivers still drive at their comfortable pace. That's a fact.

You look at 95 now that the speed limit is 70, I see a lot less people flying by in the middle and right lanes driving 10 + mph over the speed limit. Average speed is 70 to 75 and everybody gets where they need to go in a reasonable time. Sure there are still some drivers doing 90 plus, but much less of them

Precisely what I mean! Set a REASONABLE speed limit and drivers will tend to adhere to them much better than an arbitrary number.

In other news, I went towards Springfield and saw marked and unmarked on patrol, with and without customers. The campaign is visible, if nothing else...

You're seriously complaining about wasting fuel?

1. I'm pretty sure you could still drive your car in sixth gear at 50mph. No real risk of stalling out at 50mph now is there? You'll have less acceleration sure, but if you're really trying to avoid a ticket and save gas then what the fuck do you care? Which brings me directly to my second point...

2. If you're driving a car with a six speed transmission, you've already decided that you don't give a fuck about gas mileage. Can guarantee you've got some dick enhancing mobile like a BMW or an Infiniti that is lucky to get 20mpg but will net you an average of 2 STD-ridden sluts per tank. Sorry the police put a damper on your speeding plans, upper middle class broseph!

ROFLMAO!!

Yes, there are certainly some elitist mothers here in Fairfax, my friend

and how DARE the cops patrol the roads we drive, right?

@justsayin, keepontruckin - those lights are the main reason why the parkway is a deadly mess. EACH AND EVERY LIGHT was designed to be an interchange or an overpass, but were given lights as a cheaper alternative.

Franklin Farms, Popes Head, Burke Lake, Lee Chapel, and Huntsman - they ALL need to be upgraded, and like need to be done YESTERDAY, you know?

Apparently 50 means 40 or 45. I got stuck behind some lady doing 45 in the left lane yesterday afternoon. She had people right on her ass honking their horns and flashing their lights but refused to speed up or get in the right lane. Once we all made it past her we were met with another driver going 40 in the left lane, again this one refused to move over or speed up. Both drivers passed two or three left turn lanes while in the left lane so the argument that they were going to take a left is invalid. Its just stupid for people to not pay attention to what is going on around them. You wouldn't keep your cart in the middle of a grocery aisle and ignore all the other shoppers trying to get around you so why do it on the road? Just get over and once they pass you can move back into the left lane if you really feel you have to drive in the left lane at all times.

what you ran into were a cpl of road nazis - those are the ones who will see you coming up in the left lane, then pull out and pace themselves with the car in the right lane, just to be a dick.

Lotsa them around - best thing to do is to switch to the right lane, tail the person on the right for a bit - the right lane driver will usually either slow down or speed up enough for you to whip around them cause they have better things to do than to deal with you. The left lane road nazi - they DONT have anything better to do than to eff with you, and they get off on it.

Yeah, that was definitely the case with the one going 40, I could see the guy looking in the rear view and just refusing to move over. The lady on the other hand appeared to just be oblivious to the world around her, how can you not notice that every other car on the road is backing up behind you and they are all swerving into the right lane at the first chance they get and glaring at you as they pass. When I was behind this woman I never once saw her look in the rear view mirror.

Same f'ing thing you see at McDonald's. Fat lazy asshole stands in line for five minutes staring at the board deciding what to order, decides on a number 1 which has a price of $5.99. Now you know that is going to come to six something with tax, why do you stand there with your purse closed waiting for the worker to tell you that'll be $6.63 and then proceed to open the purse and dig through it for five minutes to find your cash.

Yes, I could have driven in 6th however, the RPMs are much lower and the car ran "better" in 5th, at a higher RPM level, burning more gas.

Lots of assumptions. I do not drive a pretentious import however, to your one point, you're right, I don't really care about fuel economy.

When the Fairfax County Parkway first opened, the speed limit was 45 MPH
I remember getting pulled over for "failure to obey a highway sign - to wit, 45 MPH" however, the officer never was able to determine my speed - only felt I was speeding because he "thought" I looked like I was speeding... Judge tossed out the citation!

2 good examples of this: Dulles Greenway and Pocahontas Pkwy Rt 895 in Richmond. Both are owned/oeprated by Transurban, the same people doing the beltway Hot lanes. You will note that the Greenway is a quality road with high speed limit and 3 lanes. And it is damn well maintained and I've never seen it with stop and go traffic.

From I66 @ 7100, south, there were numerous units working the northbound lanes in all the "usual" spots...

Southbound, only one unit set up at Freds Oak...

50 must really mean 50, cars were crawling!!! And I was still stuck in 5th...

I do like the toll road, but I don't really want to have to pay toll every time I have to go out to Fair Lakes or Springfield. Sure the toll road is nice and very convenient, but I'd rather drive on a less than perfect road with more traffic than have to pay $4.50 every time I drive out of my neighborhood. I pay enough into taxes, I don't want to pay toll more than I have to on top of that.

This is funny...I made a post suggesting people go 41 in a 50 zone to thumb their noses at the cops if they are attempting to shake people down or if one is in progress. I call it a shakedown because it is what it is. It's not 'revenue enhancement', it's extortion, and by the way, the only thing that it is keeping safe are certain paychecks.

I'll say it again - if people associate enough congestion with the 51-means-money propaganda, this might prevent future shakedown operations.

Well I think the idea would be that if the government was not spending large sums of money on roads, they would reduce taxes. Ideally, the amount of money that you pay in taxes that goes towards roads would simply be paid in the form of tolls. Of course that will not happen.

If all road construction and maintenece were privatized, I can see two possible outcomes:

1, people in Nova, and other populated areas, benefit substantially as companies build roads where many people will utilize them. The people can get around much easilyer. The companies have incentive to build large enough roads and keep them maintained, becuase the drivers can take another road that is better maintained or has less slow traffic, and then the company would not make as much money in tolls. I suppose this would require competing companies to be effective, which would drive down toll rates and produce well-designed and maintained roads

2. People in sparsely populated areas likely lose out, becuase no one will want to build a road in the middle of nowhere becuase it will not be profitable. SO, all residents of such areas will oppose any plan to privatize the system because it will screw them over. (I say, fuck them, they do not understand what we have to go through during rush hours) For some reason, the government listens to this minority of people and the plan is not implemented. VDOT continues to build large interstates and bypasses in rural areas of the state while Nova's transportation infrastructure crumbles and gets more backed up.

A possible compromise would be to reduce taxes for those people who live anywhere the road system is privatized, and leave the state to build/maintain the roads everywhere it is not profitable to do so. Of course, there are not enough taxpayers in such areas to provide much revenues and so nothing will get built in the rural areas. While this sounds great to us, the rural fuckers will not tolerate this, and it will not pass.

Full privatization of roads is a libertarian dream that only works on paper. It forces you to carry (IMO) a pretty odd view on individuals rights to transportation, and harkens back to a medieval era. Not to mention large sections of the population would who be inordinately negatively affected.

Furthermore, the Greenway can and will back up in the mornings as you approach the 28/Toll Road interchange.

Thankfully I don't have to deal with it, but I know some of my coworkers have paid $5.15 or whatever the peak rate is only to sit and not move for a mile.

Just a bit off topic - I wouldn;t be surprised to see ffx county go elctronic in the near future (e.g. red light cameras,speed/camera devices). Makes alot more money and they can reduce county police employees and payroll.

The Virginia General Assy. would need to first approve this idea (which I oppose 100%).

Red Light Cameras were re-aproved after the General Assy. decided not to renew them at the sundown clause. They haven't returned just yet, but when they do, there will be restrictions on how many can actually be placed.

Automated "enforcement" has serious flaws. Many communities are now rejecting this technology and many more are finding the real money goes to the contractor who runs the program. Google, "Redflex" and see for yourself. Scary stuff!

Few spots where I saw them yesterday coming home from work and then again going out to dinner.

Southbound, after the Ox Rd exit, there was a cop sitting there just past the onramp.

Northbound, popular spot, just after the Rt 66East exit there is that service road, saw one sitting there.

Southbound, on the bridge going over Bradock road, 2 cops standing there flagging people over.

For the next 2 weeks I will gladly be moving over to the right lane and letting the guy who is tailgating me fly by.

Is going 50 mph rather than 60 mph really going to reduce fatalities? The fatality rate is negligible between those two speeds.

See last sentence. Literally weeks after the patrolling levels return to normal, everyone will be going the same speed on 7100 that they've always done.

I took it for a stretch this afternoon to see how it would go, only saw one officer in 10 miles. I guess the harsh enforcement was front-loaded. I still had assholes tailgating me and flying in and out of lanes to get around the poor idiots putt-putting along at 50. And there was no payoff, they weren't pulled over a few miles down the road so I could laugh at them and cheer the police.

I drove by a cop on a motorcycle going at least 60mph (near 66, where cops always sit in the access road) on Sunday and he didn't do anything. Although this was at night and I was told by an officer they don't radar at night.

RADAR and LIDAR are both used at night. They are also used in the rain, but there are some considerations to take when using each in inclement weather
