50 MEANS 50 in FFXC

Beware

The Traffic Division of the Operations Support Bureau and the Patrol Division of the Fairfax County Police Department, in cooperation with the Virginia State Police, will launch a two-week initiative, “50 Means 50”, along Route 7100, the Fairfax County Parkway. This campaign kicks off on Sunday, April 17 and targets aggressive and reckless driving; including speeding, texting while driving, following too closely, and failure to pay full time and attention on the Fairfax County Parkway.

Motor squad officers along with patrol officers from several district stations throughout the county and Virginia State Troopers will be assigned specific enforcement duties along the parkway.

A variety of vehicles will be utilized including: motorcycles, Mustangs, Camaros, Impalas, pick-up trucks and other unmarked and marked police vehicles.

The stepped-up enforcement will take place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until its conclusion on Saturday, April 30.

The intent of the initiative is to reduce the overall average speed on the parkway and to reduce the number of property damage, injury, and fatal crashes, making the parkway a safer place for all.

Nice. Wall St thieves just got a pass on the entire mortgage fraud and the local mounties are out trying to bust working class folks for stupid crap. Amazing what this country is turning into. Two justice systems rolling now.

You can steal billions from people and get off, yet go 10 over on a road designed for 65mph and you get all sorts of legal attention.

Amazing how the police state works.

This program is a repeat in name, substance and mission, to other efforts to reduce the average speed on 7100 by roughly 5 mph. As a practical matter, they cannot pull over everyone who now participate in the 63 mph average.

I am not a cop and not a conservative driver. I have the record to prove the latter. That said, I think 7100 is the most dangerous road in NOVA. And not only because people drive too fast (they do).

Other factors:

1- volume that was not anticipated or planned for.

2- Route 28 like sudden interruptions.

3- TERRIBLE lighting after sundown.

I have travelled that damned road for over a decade. I cannot think of another stretch of road with such memorable, tragic events. I hit the right lane, put my cruise on 53 mph, and let the mad, mad world pass me by. I see most of them again at the next light and/or accident back up.

7100 cannot handle 65 mph. All of the evidence is in to the contrary. And this issue has NO THING to do with Wall Street or how FFX Police drive.

I hope the state police cite you for three miles over the limit. I always find it hilarious that people that complain about reckless and impatient drivers speeding are speeding themselves, they rationalize it though because they are just doing a little over the speed limit.

Perhaps, but I would say that 7100 is one of the least congested, bumper to bumper main arterial highways for getting from east to west. And that is why I think the stop lights make it seriously inconvenient for everyone. The road becomes stop and go only due to the lights, and otherwise you can drive mostly at speed at rush hour.

The law needs to go after 18 wheelers on Ffx Cty Pkwy. They are driving aggressivly on a road that is not built to accommodate their size.

Least congested? Mostly at speed at rush hour? Have you ever tried to head north from Rolling to Burke Lake around 5:00 PM? The light at Huntsman backs traffic up past Sydenstricker! It's freaking ridiculous. Then you invariably get stopped by at least 4 of the following 5 lights (South Run Rec Center, Lee Chapel, Old Keene Mill, Burke Lake Rd, Roberts Pkwy). Once you get past that, it's time to stop at 123 because of the light at Burke Center Pkwy. Don't rush through that light either because about half a mile ahead you hit the backup from the light at Pope's head. Think that's it? Hell no, then you get Fair Lakes Pkwy backing up traffic to past Braddock.

And that's just Northbound during evening rush. God help you if you're trying to get South from Reston! That's a solid line of traffic from Pope's Head to Loudoun County!

The Parkway has to be one of the worst designed roads in the state. It should be limited access, but instead it's this bastardized hybrid where you get flyover ramps combined with tiny neighborhood feeder streets all fighting for access to the same highway. People think "Oh, four lane road with on/off ramps. I can go fast!" only to fly around the next curve and t-bone some soccer mom pulling out of her neighborhood to get bread before the next snowstorm. If it's not that, it's half a mile of backed-up traffic from the ridiculously timed lights.

That being said, it's still the only game in town for getting from Northwest FFXCO to Southeast FFXCO...

If it were truly a "parkway," the road wouldn't have traffic lights on it. County screwed up. Look at that stupid light at Pope's Head Road, for example. Wtf? Traffic flow stops repeatedly to allow a car or two to come onto FFXCP from that intersection.

oh please. 7100 is not built for anything more than 50-59 mph. Do more than that, and you're asking for it.

There are plenty of cross streets that don't even have stoplights. Every accident on that road seems to take a limb or a life. Increase the speed limit past 50, and people will be doing 70. (ok, some already are, and I hope they get a ticket before they cause an accident and take someone out with them). Since when did every self-important speeder become road and traffic engineers? Really.

You make life difficult for the ones doing 50, and the ones doing under 60. Since when did every 4 lane highway become your own personal freeway to make the rules and terrorize?

Not sure what universe you occupy, but northbound 7100 is a breeze in the afternoon compared to southbound. Traffic backup from Fair Lakes past Braddock? Never happens. That doesn't even happen in the A.M. when northbound traffic is worse.

Yeah the county really crapped the bed on designing 7100. The poster above is right, that damn light at Huntsman is what backs it all up. Throw in the clusterfack Hooes Road that goes down to two lanes and bam you have a traffic jam. I just get off at Sydenstricker and go through Burke now, more red lights but at least it's moving. Also, theres too many curves to be going too fast, otherwise you're asking for a wreck.

You must be driving it at a different time than I was. I'll stay late at work rather than get on 7100 between 4:45 and 6:00 PM. Around 6:15 it seems to clear out pretty well, but before that look out!

Also, you neglected to quote my following paragraph where I point out that Southbound is a total clusterfuck in the evening. Given the option 100 times, I'd pick heading North in the evening over heading South every single time. That still doesn't mean heading North is puppies and rainbows all the time.

I drive northbound every afternoon, anywhere from 4:30 to 5:15. I actually get on 7100 N from Braddock, and have never seen traffic backed up that far back. Occasionally, there's a slowdown at 66 because 66 is a parking lot and the line on 7100 to get on 66 causes a bit of congestion. The line at the Fair Lakes light is not bad. I don't remember ever having to sit through mutliple cycles of that light.

7100 wasn't "designed", it was "cobbled". Much of 7100 is a patchwork of roads that we in place decades before the "parkway" was put together, connected by new road construction.

And it isn't a homogeneous road, some lengths of it can comfortably take 60mph, others are too close to traffic lights and should be less than what is posted now.

It has too many merge points. Then instead of letting one car in, you either have the person who lets 3-4 cars in or the asswipe who doesn't let a single car in.

There's the diff; I actually get on 7900 where it starts at Beulah and follow it until it turns into 7100. If I get on there any later than about 5:00, I'm condemned to crap traffic all the way up. Huntsman really is the killer though, that fucking light would shit on the Queen's Birthday Party if it ever got the chance.

The original section opened with a 55 mph speed limit. The first idiot that wrecked between 123 and Burke Centre Pkwy convinced then to lower the limit.

If you go the EXACT speed limit anywhere in NOVA, people will run you off the fucking road. Theres a big difference between going a couple miles over and a wreckless driver, common!

They're working on it. Fair Lakes and Monument Drive lights are being eliminated with a more parkway-like interchange being built there. Of course, if VDOT progress on the beltway is any indication, it will be 10 years before they finish the f'in thing.

I dont understand how they arent going to finish this shit until 2013. Back in november they already had all the trees removed and were installing drainage. Now they are just barley constructing some ramps. VDOT needs to tell its contractors to work a little harder. If this was a private developer doing the work, the damn bridge would already be built.

You want to see slow road construction? Go up 81/83 around Harrisburg PA, they've been working on that stupid roadway for the last 10 years and looks like they'll never finish.

They knock out the work here so fast it's unreal.

I drive it every day heading East toward Beulah, right around 1:30p.m. Then again from Beulah heading West, right around 9p.m. I saw the sign today(50 Means 50). I am one of those that does the speed limit on that road (though I wanna go faster, I admit). Doing 50 I have had people blast past me, giving dirty looks as they pass and I think, "go ahead you get the ticket" and still they didn't get much further, being that we meet up at the next light. BUT, the thing that REALLY bugs the crap outta me ... are the people that are doing 40! There have been so many cars in front of me doing 40, there's always someone everyday, I can't believe it! Thinking: "Good Lord, have you NOT SEEN THE DAMN SIGN -- you don't know what speed you're suppose to be going?!

I have been on that stretch you mention where its 1 lane in each direction seperated by jersey wall for 5 mile stretches, it fuckin sucks.

But look how long it took to get interchanges put in on 28. They built the one at 29 and then it took 10 years for them to get all the way to frying pan road.

Perhaps the problem is not the speed limits or traffic jams (those are just resuts), the problem is people's value of time. People whose time is more important are willing to go faster than the speed limit while you got people who have nothing but time, they are the ones taking trips to the store for a gallon of milk and because their time is not as important, they can look at the little birds on the side of the road without a worry or remorse on going slow. So you end up with people doing 70 and people doing 40. Then to escalate it by a lack of courtesy or road education. Meaning, our education as people is one and as driver's is another. If you see someone on the trail running and your are walking you move to the right and let the one running pass by, on the road it's not the same, the results: tailgating, unsafe lane changing and passing, etc. Remember the left lane is for passing not for blocking. Courtesy should be applied to those mergin, one and one (even thou the people from side streets and ramps are suppoused to yield the right of way to the ones on the main road). So to make a long story short, if you want to get some revenue, this is a great way. If you want to make the road safer then other steps need to be implemented. Here is an idea: install a dager on the stering wheel of everyone's car, pointing at the driver's heart so if he/she has an accident it will be impelled into his/her chest. I can guarantee that none will speed and all will be courteous.

Too true. I don't mind if you want to go 50 or even less, just do it in the slow/slower lane (right lane.)

Though most of the time people are talking on the phone and have no clue they are backing up the traffic.

Hope this next 2 weeks catches tons of people texting and being morons. :)

"Here is an idea: install a dager on the stering wheel...."

Here's an idea....learn to spell because I'm not frightened by your dager and my car has a steering wheel.

So, you didn't understand "dager" but then you recognized the word and realized that it was misspelled? OK, good job, do you want a treat? ...oh and also let me guess you just noticed that your junk .. err car .. has a steering wheel? that's nice. Now tell the truth, did you get your car in a plastic box from toys "r" us? or from a cereal box? I imagine that those sometimes are missing their steering wheel. Just to make sure you are clear: Unlike real cars, toys cars can be operated with out a steering wheel.

Stay safe on your basement and don't be nuisance on the road or the blog.

Why don't they put a graded intersection at Popes Head? Not a full clover, but run P.H. above the Parkway w/ 2 lights up there for access.

They have plenty of space for it. I wonder if it's on the radar, and they just don't have funding for awhile?

A few years back when Rte. 123 (Ox Road) connecting I-95 (near Occoquan) and FFXCounty Parkway was widened to its current form (four lanes with median) a lot of traffic was added from the Fredericksburg, Dale City, etc. that previously would take other routes.

Actually my truck came out of a Cracker Jack box.

I'm not following you on the steering wheel comment. I was pointing out that the poster also spelled steering wheel wrong. Guess you can't be bothered to pay attention to detail when you read something.

Yes I want a treat, what are you offering?

When does this shit end. People are doing 30 or less because they are scared by the mobile signs.
Traffic on the Parkway has never been worse.

"The stepped-up enforcement will take place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week until its conclusion on Saturday, April 30."

Ain't 24/7, that's for sure. This must be a heavy focus of a certain stretch of 7100.

didnt see any today.

I'm SHOCKED I havent seen any between Hooes and Sydenstricker - usually they LOVE that area:

1) median under the Hooes & Pohick underpasses

2) the little residential Hooes Rd intersection

3) the eastbound shoulder against the retaining wall past the Syderstricker ramp

Going to keep details light as to not give the FCPD asswipes any intel, but the time of day I drive along certain parts of 7100, I thought it would be a hot time to patrol.

FCPD is out in full force today on the parkway. I passed 8 cops in a three mile stretch of the parkway. Saw a couple people pulled over and another officer shootin' cars with his radar gun.

I can and did read the press release. This thread is about the police activity on the Fairfax County Parkway over the next two weeks, which is what my post was relating to.

As of 2:00 pm Thursday, there were a crew of motorcycle cops catching speeders going southbound between Popes Head and Burke Centre.

If you do not like this development, why not protest within the law:

50 means 41.

It would be more effective in the left lane, which is traditionally the choice of those going a bit faster. If it were to stall traffic, it may just create an outcry. I like to go 9 under if I see an extortion in progress (i.e. someone with a radar gun).
