Clifton Centreville Animal Clinic in Centreville - in the shopping center near 28/29 with the Glory Days & IHOP. Wonderful folks, I've been taking my pets to the doctors there since I was a kid when they had the practice in a little old house down by the old Woods market. The number is 703-830-8844.

do not go to pender, they are a huge rip off.

had my dogs teeth cleaned there, they charged me for the cleaning, pulling 3 teeth, pain meds and antibiotics total cost 480.00... btw... they didn't pull any teeth.

I hear bainfeld at petsmart is pretty good. I know I'll be going there from now on.

if you are worried about vet costs you shouldn't have a pet. your pets life obviously has some kind of price tag... shame!

Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT, go to Banfield at Petsmart.
They are the reason I started this thread.

My dog had a small accident and was obviously in pain.
I called the nearest animal hospital, which was the Banfield
at my local Petsmart. I called them and told them the
situation and was told "sure, bring her right over,
the doctor can see her immediately..." (EXACT QUOTE)
They took down my name and phone number.... I told them
that I would be there in less than 10 minutes.

I managed to get her into the car and drove to Banfield.
Got there in 7 or 8 minutes. When I walked in, the nurse
was chatting with another woman, who turned out to be her
old college friend. I told them I had called earlier and
she told me to have a seat and wait. Then she continued
to chat for another couple of her minutes with her friend.
Their discussion was about a party they were going to next
week. (!) I was upset, but I kept my cool.

I finally lost it when she finally took a look at my do and
said "oh, the doctor just went out to lunch 5 minutes ago
and won't be back until 2pm" Guess what, as she was telling
me this, the doctor walked right past us. I begged the
doctor to at least take one quick look. The reply? "It's my
lunch hour, if I see your dog, I have to see everybody's dog"
(there were no other customer there at the time)

Needless to say, I was shocked by how little they seemed to
care. I rushed out and drove another 20 minutes to another
animal hospital that I've heard about in Fairfax County.
This one had a doctor on duty and my dog was treated. The
bill came to $1300.

My dog was very imporant to me. While $1300 was a lot of money,
my dog is even more important to me.

Well, a day later, I talked to a friend whose dog had
a similar injury. The cost? $429. (sound my jaw hitting
the floor)

Two lessons I've learnd:

(1) do not go to Banfield

(2) going to other animal hospital may mean getting ripped off

How come people enjoy animals in their homes?

Cats pee and crap inside, dogs outside, some have to walk them. birds, inside, reptiles, inside. Lions, Tigers and bears, Oh My!, I would assume outside. Fish, in their home.

Why would anyone let an overgrown rodent into their home? If you do let a rodent in your home, be sure to change your furnace/AC filter(s) often.

If you don't mind driving into Loudoun County, I highly recommend

Animal Medical Center
20789 Algonkian Parkway
Great Falls Plaza
Potomac Falls, VA 20165

www.amccascades.com

Dr. DeAnna Mitchell and Dr. Conti are the best!

I go to VCA University Vet across form george Mason. A little more than my parents pay for similar services in upstate New York, but I figure this is Northern VA prices. Doctor is great and has taken great care of our cat who has unfortunately had two medical problems last year. They also have Saturday appointments.

I'm pretty close to that area...

How's the doctor at "Animal Medical Center"
and are the rates reasonable?

Thanks! :)

Been taking the family cat to VCA at University Mall for 5+ years now, and service is usually fine. However, few months ago, I took my cat to get his teeth cleaned. Went to pick him up later in the day, and they decided to charge me $300 for blood work and antibiotics, which were prescribed because he had a low white blood cell count. Sort of sketchy, since our cat was as active and appeared to be as healthy as ever. Somehow during the course of the entire day, they forgot to clean his teeth and told me I would have to schedule for another time. This was around the holiday season, figured the vet needed extra money to buy more presents or something. Basically, wouldn't recommend this place.

I have actually had great success with Banfield at Petsmart. I happen to take my two dogs to the one in Gainesville. The veterinarian is very caring and attentive. My only issue is that it seems that have a slight difficulty in keeping appointment times, but I can understand this to a degree.

As far as their cost, I do not have any of my veterinarian bills sitting next to me to reference them, but I have never had any sort of sticker shock. These people are great and are more than willing to take the time to answer any question you may have - this probably contributes to their wait times.

As far as emergency service: their is an animal hospital (I am sure there are others, however this is the only one of which I know) on route 28 in Manassas City. It is called the Prince William Animal Hospital. I am unsure of the center it is in, however its location is certain to me. (Headed south on 28, it is on the right, after the library, but about a mile before Liberia Ave.) This facility is open all the hours that the other vets are not open: after 5, all night, and weekends. I had to take one of my pooches there for a leg injury. Their prices were reasonable as they did not charge me for the emergency visit because the injury resulted in only a bruise. This saved me roughly $90 and I had a visit of roughly $100 total. I highly recommend them in an emergency if you live in the proximity. I am sure there are similar facilities in FFX.

I feel compelled to comment on the various contributions to this thread that insinuate that petcare is ridiculous. Firstly, I have a dog that was at risk of needing back surgery a couple of years ago. There is a horse doctor in Loudoun that is a horse surgeon, that is also (as I am told) the only animal neurosurgeon in the NOVA area. I anticipated an expense of $5000 for the surgery. I was ok with that. Fortunately, I was able to "correct" the issue with medication.

I adopted this dog from a rescue. He was picked up as a stray when he was a puppy, and I adopted him when he was about 6 months old. One may say that the life or welfare of a pet is not worth the $5000, but I was willing to pay to correct his medical condition. I adopted him and assumed his safety and well-being. No, I do not value him the same as I would for my own child, however, I have an obligation to assure that he has a full and healthy life. It is something for which I have signed up.

Commonwealth Animal Hospital in Fairfax.

10860 Main St
Fairfax, VA 22030
(703) 273-8183

I can't say enough about Commonwealth. They know their stuff; they love animals; they understand the problem of cost.

We'd used Pender for about 7 years. They are good, caring, and have good emergency services, but possibly because of their size they employ a lot of new vets with less experience. I think the less experienced vets tend to tackle medical mysteries by throwing all the tests in the book at the problem.

At Commonwealth, the vets have vast experience and will tackle mysteries from the top down. They're able to perform a better sort of triage: concentrating on the problem at hand while keeping things in perspective. For instance, my dog was viciously attacked by another dog and it wasn't clear whether she needed an x-ray. The primary bite was on a joint, which heals slowly, the vet explained. He cleaned the area and showed me how to keep it clean then extensively manipulated the leg while also asking lots of questions about my dog's history. We agreed to wait a day or so before doing an x-ray. By the next afternoon, my dog wasn't limping anymore and we avoided a potentially costly treatment.

Dr. Hunter at Commonwealth has now treated all of our pets, and he is very thorough and very caring. We've seen the other vets there as well and have had wonderful care.

I've been taking my dog to Banfield in Petsmart for about a year. I signed up for a $30/mo. plan, but they also try to jack up the cost of treatment with little things here and there. The people seem nice, but you have to watch them like a hawk.

Also, my dog is vaccinated against kennel cough, however, he still gets it EVERY TIME I take him there. They say he's just getting the kind that they don't vaccinate for, but that seems sketchy to me.

I used to live in a little town in PA... the vet there only charges $90 for
dental cleaning on for cats...(including anthesia) but like I said, it's a little town where everytyhing was cheap.

I'm with you all the way, MP.

They are selfish, shallow, people that think spending money on pets is stupid. I bet they think spending thousands on a stupid ass big TV...or some obnoxious motor vehicle makes perfect sense.

I have spent thousands on my dogs...they are literally my best friends. But I could count on the fingers of one hand the number of humans on earth that I would contribute one red fucking cent to their medical care! (other than what I am forced to through taxes)

Eastern Exotics is excellent for birds and other non dog, non cat pets :) They are located in the Pender building.

I like the Franklin Farms vetenary clinic; they spend a lot of quality time with each animal and if there is an emergency that they cannot handle, they refer out to either the Hope Center (in Vienna, which is excellent) or the emergency center in Leesburg.

Alexandria Animal hospital is one of the top rated vet clinics and they have an on site emergency center there. The only downfall is the location if you do not live in that part of the county. All of the vets are very experienced.

I've lived in various regions of the country, and I have always maintained excellent veterinary care of my pets, found caring, reputable vets by diligently searching whenever I relocated. I have NEVER lived in a place where the quality of veterinary care is so substandard, and yet so overpriced. It's all about the money here and not about the care. period. shame on you for judging the person making a very reasonable request. Sadly, ripping people off is the NoVA way.

Perhaps you should look into getting health insurance for your dog. My dog had an injury last year and the insurance cover all costs. I only had to pay a $250 co pay.

We had pet insurance a few years back. The combination of copays and caps meant they ended up actually paying very little. Unlike human docs, vets do not seem to cap their fees based on insurance reimbursements. Unless things have improved in the past ten years, it is probably better to pocket the premiums and use them to pay for the services.

I agree on Commonwealth, especially if you are worried about getting ripped off. I've had vets telling me I had to get my cats teeth cleaned for years and they always make you feel guilty about it like the cat is going to die if you don't shell out all this money when there doesn't even seem to be a problem. When I moved to Fairfax a few years ago I started going here. On our first trip to the vet, the old guy takes a long look at the cats teeth and says her teeth are fine.

I also brought her in one when she was having bladder problems. It turned out to be something minor, but we had to switch her diet. THey gave me like 10 samples of foods to have her try so we didn't have to waste money on a whole bag that she wouldn't touch.

I am very comfortable taking our cat there, even though it is more of a dog place. They definitely aren't trying to sell you anything your pet doesn't need.

I second Franklin Farms Vet clinic. I started to use them after having a horrible experience at another vet clinic. The vets at Franklin Farms spend a lot of time with you--they dont just rush you in and out. They provide education and information in addition to care. They do not push products on you, either. They are reasonably priced and the vet techs are excellent. This practice is more of a 'mom and pop' mentality versus a big vet practice where the animals and their humans are treated poorly and rushed through (like the first place I went to, although there were a lot of other problems with that place).

I am not sure where the OP is located, but Franklin Farms is not hard to get to. It is not far from 28/Fairfax County Parkway.

Might have to try Commonwealth.

Have been going to Columbia Pike Annimal Hospital and her sister location Town and Country and have always felt like I was paying too much for both routine and non-routine services. Plus, in 8+ years of going there, we have never seen the head Vet. The only consistent thing about them is that you will see a different Vet each and every time.

The final straw for me was that 2 years ago I took my dog in to have a growth removed. Got talked into getting blood work done to give us a baseline. Added on the grooming and teeth cleaning since he would be sedated anyway. 1 year later, another growth in the same spot. New vet, upsell on the blood work (uh, didn't we do a baseline last year? - oh yeah....). Ask for an estimate of the costs and it comes in at 1.5 times the cost of the year before and that included blood work and grooming.

No thanks. Couple of months later take my dog along for a visit back home and my parent's Vet takes a look at him and says not to worry about it.

I don't have a bird, but I go to Stahl Exotic Animal Veterinary Services for my wife's rat. There's always someone with a bird there.

Pender's a rip off agreed-but good w/the exotics, saved my sister-in-laws boa twice...but at 20x what she paid for it each time.

More often than not I drive down to Occoquan Animal Hospital off Rt 1-they don't take appointments, only walk-in's 10am-1or2pm and 4p-7p mon-fri, sat has short hours(they close from 1/2p-4p for surgery). But it's under $40 for the visit, they have a great vet that will see some exotics, she even called 2days after I was in to check on my lil guy. They are a little slow, but amazing with pets and people alike. They also do boarding. It's a drive, but worth it.

Just because you didn't get the reception you wanted doesn't mean they didn't care. I'm sure there was poor communication on their part, but the doctor wasn't wrong. Doctors, animal or otherwise, have a lot of stuff to do in a day (surgeries included), and lunch is basically their only break. If they continued to bend the rules and see a bunch of pets past the designated walk in hours, why even bother having lunch? Why not just make them work all day, non-stop?

They can't, even if they wanted to, because most companies demand you take an hour break if you work 7-8 hours or more. Look it up.

And during the break from appointments between 12-2, when they aren't at lunch, they are tending to pets who have been dropped off that morning. Sick pets, difficult pets, pets in need of exams, shots, x-rays, what have you. Don't assume the worst in the staff just because they may not have "looked busy" to you. And if the vet is out of the hospital, nobody else can touch incoming pets. Part of it is a legal and company issue.

Just saying.

Also, they have health care plans to lower the cost of services. This is why you do research before you get a pet, or before it does something that warrants a trip to a vet.

Took the new kitten to Elpaw.
33 S Pickett St, Alexandria.

Seperate entrances/lobby for dogs and cats (or other wee things) which was awesome bc she was very scared.

Dr Pierce is very knowledgeable and clearly cares about the animals. Actually took the time to show me how to do the shit i needed to do at home and made sure i understood.

Frances the admin hooked me up financially and with the scheduling problems i had. (Bc i told her id gotten the kitten at the arlington shelter where she volunteers)

The white-trash tech was a little unsettling. Youll know who im talking about.

Definitely wont go anywhere else now.
Recommend to anyone, unless youve got something pretty exotic....in that case theres a place out in vienna that has exotics in the name thats good...was years ago though dont remember full name.

OPs animals are probaby all dead by now, so i doubt this was helpful.

I'm surprised by seeing so many people recommending Pender. I had nothing but bad experiences with them. From over-charging on services we didn't even receive (on multiple occasions, might I add) to misdiagnosing my dog with Lyme's disease (our new vet tested and it turns out he never had Lyme's disease, but we were certainly charged enough by Pender for the Lyme's medication) to giving my puppy a horse tranquilizer to trim his nails. I can't speak for their exotic pet clinic but for cats and dogs - RUN!

Avoid Banfield like the plague. They have a ripoff wellness plan and their quick exams are borderline malpractice. And they are just as expensive as...

Pender. Who at least has great doctors and accurately diagnoses illnesses and injuries.

I'll pay for good care, and even found that many Pender services are less expensive than Banfield, even with their Wellness plan prices.

VCA SouthPaws is also great for emergency treatment.

Avoid Banfield.

That's about it. Bill N. is usually the voice of reason.
BTW this also applies to dental insurance for humans.

Suburban in Arlington is great for cats, probably dogs too as I see enough of them in there. Good hours, though short hours on weekends.

I would stay away from Parkway in Burke -- too many new docs that do not really have the expertise necessary.
SouthPaws--very expensive, not really great care.

Hunter Mill in Oakton--great vets and flexibility to see a pet when there is an emergency. First rate all around.

Hope Clinic in Vienna---very expensive, but sometimes you need a specialist or a vet at 3 AM. Missed an issue badly about a year ago and still charged 2K. Other experiences have been much better, and the staff there is friendly and very helpful.

Burke vet will never see my pets again. They are overpriced and one Dr there misdiagnosed my animal for over a year. I would stay away from them like the plague.

Ive been going to Columbia Pike Animal Hospital for 20 years and have seen the same 2 vets the whole time.

If you want to see the same vet or the owner of the Hospital (Dr.Hall) it's as simple as telling the receptionist you want to see that vet.

The prices are a little high though, agree with you there.

+1 on Pender. Took my lab there that was limping and wanted to schedule a $3000 ACL operation immediately. Was only seen by the tech and she only took an x-ray. I waited two days and he was fine again

A friend who's a vet told me this story a few years back:

A yellow lab is brought in to her clinic because it ATE A THROW RUG!

Let that sink in a moment: This stupid fucking dog ate a goddamned rug.

My friend examined the dog and determined that pieces of the goddamned rug were lodged in its stomach, its intestines, its bowels, etc.

My friend gave the owners and estimate for the surgery to remove the goddamned rug from inside the stupid fucking dog: $8,000.

The owners didn't even blink before agreeing to pay for the operation.

Amazing!

Lemme tell ya, if that had been my stupid fucking dog, a different decision would have been made...

Unfortunately there are none around here anymore. Most all have been assimilated into the VCA Borg. The remaining few that have not are following the same basic business model. It's been transformed into a highly revenue-focused business built on leveraging customer's love for their pets to extract as much money as possible. Not that there aren't good vets but that's the model that they're working within. Especially in an affluent area like this.

Along with that more higher-end services and specialists available and sold now which greatly increase the costs. 20 years ago if your dog or cat had cancer, then it died in a few months. Now it gets an initial ultrasound, referred to a specialist at a separate practice, followed by an MRI, maybe an operation, several rounds of chemo, and then it dies within about the same time frame.

As a business guy I have to be impressed by the beauty of the model. But as a human and pet owner and I hate it.
