Arrest/Ticket search now active!
Posted by: admin ()
Date: February 25, 2005 08:12PM

Although the interface is pretty crappy right now I am making the arrest search live.
I am reading up on perl and getting some good outside help to make this better.
Try searching for your street name or something and see what it pulls up. Goes back about 2 years.

*click the link below to go to the arrest list:

Any comments or suggestions? Let me know.

edit: i guess this doesn't have to be sticky anymore

I got some questions about this so I'll answer them.
Yes, this database has all traffic tickets and arrests.
One of the really cool features is to search by street name. I, for example, didn't know my neighbor got a DUI. You can also search for last name, first name, etc. Let me know if there are any more questions.

Yeah I know common names will overflow the list. Try searching for your street name instead. I wrote a perl script to do individual field matching (like search last name: charles) but it took so freaking long to go through the file that it wouldn't work. i'm trying it now with c++. if anyone has more skills than me please let me know. - admin

new feature added to count the amount of results found. this way if you search for something like "dwi" you will get a number of how many are found. unfortunately due to bandwidth constraints you will still only be able to see the first 100 matches. i am working on a way to make it so you can search for "dwi" and "vienna" and display the list that matches both. of course i would still love to be able to search each field individually, but this will have to do for now. questions? comments? throw em' at me

You can now search for up to 3 strings at a time to narrow down your search. For example you can search for DWI and McLean to see the DWI arrests from McLean. Results are still limited to 100 lines.

Yes this is the same thing it says on the page because I'm lazy. Go click the link up top and go check it out.

i've gotten some questions as to how up-to-date this list is. the answer is very up-to-date. this list automatically updates itself every wednesday night at 8:00pm EST. incidents occuring within the last week are usually reported. more serious incidents in which an investigation follows may take an additional week for the paperwork to go through and the arrest to appear on this list.

Fairfax County spending is out of control. I can't believe more individuals are not concerned with the amount of money they want for us for little services. Fairfax County has become a WELFARE DUMP and we are asked to pay for it. Connolly can only talk about affordable housing at our expense.

I would like to get your feed back.

Arrest list database updated! I dug up some weekly arrest lists from various machines around my house and filled in some gaps. In total 6 new weeks worth of arrests were added to the database. The database will continue to automatically update every wednesday night at 8:00pm with the latest information. This now brings the total number of arrests on file to 266,005!

There are still a few scattered holes in the database from the past several years, but I am actively trying to fill those as well. If you have any weekly arrest lists archived for some reason please run a couple names on it against the list on this site. If you think you have found a plug to one of the holes please let me know! Mad props is all I can offer. Thanks.

It'd be interesting to map violations to identify where what types of violations occur. Might illustrate particular police tactics used in various spots to target specific violations.

Something like http://www.buzztracker.org but with a menu letting you choose which violations.

Just a thought. Awesome project as it is.

Interesting thought jk.
Unfortunately the addresses on the ticket list show the place of residence, not the location of where the crime occured.
It would still be interesting to get a breakdown on where the majority of offenders live.
I'd have to create a map of the county with every street name embedded and figure out a way to transpose the arrests onto it.
Anyone work at mapquest and want to hook me up with your database? :)

Very accurate. All information is pulled directly from the Fairfax County police website. You can always view the current weekly arrest list at on the official website at http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/ps/police/reports/Arrest.txt
All I have done is simply pull down this weekly arrest list once a week for the last couple years and made it into a database.
If you have any other questions let me know.

this tool is good but the VA pilot website has a much more advanced tool. You can look up by jurisdiction for the entire state. Cary has a link to it somewhere on here.

Cary's tool has the easy functionality that I wish the pilot website had. On the reverse, the pilot website obviously has a ton more data. Despite what that site may say, it has data going back to 98 for just about all jurisdictions listed.

It would be nice to have the fields seperated and the data cleaned up a bit so I wrote a python script to do it. I hope the admin takes and uses it. If you need any help post back to this thread and I will see what I can do.

#!/usr/bin/python
import urllib
import re
import datetime
import time

data = urllib.urlopen("http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/ps/police/reports/Arrest.txt")

expr = re.compile("^\"(?P.*)\",\"(?P.*)\",\"(?P\w*)\s*\",\"(?P\d+)\",\"\s*(?P.*)\",\"(?P.*)\",\"(?P\w*)\s*\",\"(?P.*)\",\"(?P\w*)\s*\",\"(?P.*)\",\"(?P.*)\".*")

cleaned = []
for line in data:
m = expr.match(line)
firstName = m.group('First').strip().title()
middleInitial = m.group('MI').strip()
lastName = m.group('Last').strip().title()
if (middleInitial):
print "Name: %s %s. %s" % (firstName, middleInitial, lastName)
else:
print "Name: %s %s" % (firstName, lastName)
age = int(m.group("Age"))
print age
streetNumber = m.group("StNum").strip()
street = m.group("Street").strip().title()
streetPostfix = m.group("STP").strip().title()

city = m.group("City").strip().title()
state = m.group("State").strip()

print "Address: %s %s %s\n %s, %s" % (streetNumber, street, streetPostfix, city, state)

offenseDate = datetime.datetime.fromtimestamp(time.mktime(time.strptime(m.group("Date"),"%m/%d/%Y")))
offense = m.group("Violation").strip()

cleaned.append([(firstName, middleInitial, lastName), (city, state), offenseDate, offense])

Nice. Thank you very much darkfusion, this will make the display much prettier. What I REALLY need is a script to search through the master text file by individual field instead of just grepping for strings like I do now. I whipped up something in perl a couple months ago but it was so god-awfully slow that I decided to keep this interface for now.
Anyway, I tried to run your code and got some errors:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "./python.py", line 4, in ?
import datetime
ImportError: No module named datetime

commented out that line for the hell of it and got:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "./python.py", line 9, in ?
expr = re.compile("^\"(?P.*)\",\"(?P.*)\",\"(?P\w*)\s*\",\"(?P\d+)\",\"\s*(?P.*)\",\"(?P.*)\",\"(?P\w*)\s*\",\"(?P.*)\",\"(?P\w*)\s*\",\"(?P.*)\",\"(?P.*)\".*")
File "/usr/lib/python2.2/sre.py", line 178, in compile
return _compile(pattern, flags)
File "/usr/lib/python2.2/sre.py", line 228, in _compile
raise error, v # invalid expression
sre_constants.error: unknown specifier: ?P.

Is my version of python too old? I'm running python-2.2.1-17
thanks again

As for the field thing you probably want to use this script to get all of the data into a database. That should make it quicker and allow for searches on any of the fields. MySQL is the free database which I prefer. Interfacing the script should not be much work at all.

As for the python thing I thought datetime was a standard module. The version of python that I am running is 2.3 and that is actually a release behind. I would try upgrading it if you can. You should be able to run the script on your local machine without having to install it on the server.

If you run windows there is a great setup program available at: http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.3.5/Python-2.3.5.exe

I breifly thought about an interface of the search results to google maps. I am not sure how people would feel about that.

The VA courts lookup is very useful. It's in the links section above.

The data for this list comes from: http://www.co.fairfax.va.us/ps/police/reports/Arrest.txt (warning 500k text file) which is released by the fairfax county police department every week.

If you want to make searching easier, and queries much easier and faster set up a MySQL server. Then you can write a python script that downloads all the lists, and enters them into the database. The advantage is that you can query the MySQL database by certain values, like last name only, or street name only. And having the MySQL database would make it easy to add other attributes, like zip codes to the area the arrestee lives.

If you want more info about it just take an old computer with a decent hard drive, and use the Debian Net-Installer and tell it to set up a MySQL server(and workstation is advised for easy admin purposes). And that whole process would only take maybe 4-10 hours depending on how familiar you are with linux and your download rate.

Let me know if I can be of more help. I can code and I have experience as a Linux Admin.

I think it's important for people to remember that these are only arrest details, not convictions. How would you feel if people were judging you without knowing the facts? BTW - no I am not saying this because I am on there! :-)

As far as worring about privacy, if you bought a home that's public domain and your address is available. I went to something as simple as WP.com and found tons of pro athletes addresses based on a buyer search.

Call the courthouse and find out if it has posted. In VA, a radar retector does not have to be plugged in to get a summons. You must ensure the device is in a location of your car that it cannot access a power source. In other words, put it in your trunk, not the glovebox.

Will this application find violations for minors under 18? I know that my daugther's friends have multiple moving violations, but they are not here.

No. Minors have no public records.

Even for moving violations? I know that a few of them have had pretty serious tickets and it would be great to know who the irresponsible drivers are and what they were charged with. Maybe it is not a surprise, but just about every one of them got a new car for the one they wrecked, even after causing their parents to spend multiple weekend days in driver improvement school.

Simply because they are under 18, you will most likely never see their ticket records on a public site.

<sarcasm>
That's because kids under 18 are so innocent and must be protected.

There ARE some records for arrests under age 18, but it looks like they're cases where the minor was charged as an adult...the offenses listed go all the way down to age 14, and include:

"DRUNK IN PUBLIC" (" I was drunk in a BAR.....I was thrown INTO publick!")
"PTY LARC"
"SIMPLE ASSAULT"
"FORCIBLE SODOMY"
"ALCH POSS"

Yo Cary, I'm working on this project for my database class. Do you think it would be possible to grab the arrest lists from you, or for you to point to me where past ones are archived? I only see the weekly arrest list, and I think they used to archive the previous weeks, but I couldn't find it. Basically, I just need a shitload of data to process and play around with. Help me out. Thanks! W_

How were you able to pull down data from previous weeks?

I got inspired by all the arrests made by FCPD, and made this website for class:

http://cs4604.cs.vt.edu/~wchiang

Check out the mapped query section. The amount of data in the database is probably about 4 weeks worth. W_

THIS IS BULLSHIT. ...i dont have the best reputation in fairfax but honestly. i just pulled this up under tickets and this shit reminds me how gay fairfax is. I turned into a two lane road and there was a car in the lane nearist me. so we got in an accident. that fucker could have moved into another lane... so when the cops asked who's fault it was. i said NOT MINES. w/o even telling me the fucker gave ME a ticket. i was about ready to argue that shit in court.

i fucked up my pop's car in this accident, which was a week after i totalled my own.
after the "minor collision" me and my buddies went to their house and got belligerently drunk.

fuck driver improvement courses and the police

I'm still on there, you just can't search by my last name. And yes, it has been in place forever.

Just a quick note. Previously the arrest list updated every wednesday night at 8:00pm. However for the past 3 weeks the new arrest list has not been available until Thursday. Therefore, I am changing the script to grab the newest arrest list and update the search utility every Thursday at 8:00pm.

I know a lot of researchers flood to it every wednesday night to get the latest scoop. You will have to wait until Thursday now.

Suggestion:

I'd like to be able to pin my search to a specific field.

Example: If I search for Newport (the street I live on - Newport Dr), it'll pull up everything from Newport Dr and Newport News, VA. Is there any way you might be able to add on a feature to search by a specific field?

I don't know any Python, but I'll see if I can translate it into Java pseudo-code.

String search1 = [user's search in the first box];
int field1 = [fields are assigned numbers - last name, first name, etc];
int recsFound = 0;
//if this hits 100 inside for-loop, the loop is cut off

for(int x = 0; x < numRecordsInDatabase; x++)
{
//assume each full line is parsed into String "record"
String thisField = record.substring(*,*);
//makes thisField equivalent to the chunk of text between the starting and ending "s of a field, since they're all a constant length

if(thisField.indexOf(search1) < -1)
//if the user's search is found within the field
{
System.out.println(record);
//spit out the record on the console window - probably different for the intarnets
recsFound++;
//increment records found number to limit at 100
}
if(recsFound == 100)
break;
}

This would need to be converted to Python, of course, but hopefully I've put the algorithm together well enough that you get it.

The arrest list has grown to the point where a lot of garbage data gets matched for a street name search. I cooked up a perl script to do field matching about a month ago but it was far too slow for production (~25 seconds for query execution as opposed to the current ~0.5 seconds).

In the next month or so I'll be bringing the whole database into MySQL and allowing specific field searching.

In the meantime, you can cut out all the crap by searching for "newport" and "chantilly" or similarly "street name" and "street's city" for any other location.

In the arrest database, what merits the charge of "RUNNING AT LARGE DOGS"?

It should read "Running at large, dogs"

It means there was a leash violation.

I'll add this to the Ticket/Arrest search wiki
