Has anybody rented a stump grinder? From where and how much did it cost? I checked sunbelt rental but is was $220 for 1 day. I think that is about what a contractor would charge to do it himself. Anybody ever hire a reasonable company or contractor for a 12 inch stump removal? What were the rates? Thanks
I just rented one last week at Grand Rentals in Berryville. It was a walk behind type so it fit in the back of my Colorado. I loaded it with car ramps. it was a bit heavy. I did two large stumps in a couple of hours. I picked it up at 10:00 and returned it at 2:00 for a cost of $90. I think they have a half day rate and a full day rate. There was a larger track type that was more money.

+1. It's a bitch, but I've done it. You need at a minimum: a shovel, an axe/hatchet, and a long spud bar. A sawsall is really helpful. If you can get a stump to move, it's only a matter of time before it comes out.
A contractor will charge about 250.

Why does the guy from MRStumpys pretend to be mulitple satisfied customers. Ive never used his company but if he needs to pretend to be a satisfied customer, he probably sucks.
Mr. Stumpy is awesome! Not only did he cheerfully grind out all my stumps, but he also gave me CPR when I was having a heart attack..and he didn't charge for the CPR!
Buy an auger drill bit. Drill about 6 to 7 holes about 6 inches deep. Go to Home Depot/Lowes and buy a product called Stump Out. Wait about six months. The Stump Out should have killed the stump making it easy to remove.
Instead of Stump Out, you can add a mixture of oil and gas about once a month in all of the holes. Fill each hole to the top. Again wait about six months, put a bit of gas in the holes, light the gas on fire, and grab a beer to watch the stump burn. If you start this now, you could have a bit of fun in the winter.
A third option is to go buy some Amonium Nitrate and some kerosene. Mix the two together until it becomes paste-like. Place this paste under your stump by digging a small hole. Buy a decent long fuse. Light the fuse and run for cover. Expect the PD and the FD to arrive a short time later.
Each option will cost considerably less that contracting out to a company.
