Congrats to Springfield School Board Member, Liz Bradsher on your win last night.

It will be nice to have a voice in the district!

All the best!

Also, not to forget the new Supervisor, Pat Herrity. Your Dad did much good for Fairfax County! Again, All the best!

I agree with the above. Liz bradsher will be a huge asset to our school board. She is a tireless advocate for kids and for families. Not only that but she is a wonderful mom. I wish Liz nothing but the best as she adds her many talents and her voice to our school board. Thank you for all you have done at your children's schools in the past.

It's too bad that Liz didn't run for Springfield Supervisor the way a lot of us wanted. She would have been much more influential to bring about SCMS in a timely manner and through alternative funding. Now she won't be able to focus as much on this specific issue because she has to waste time with other FCPS stuff.

Either way, she'll be better than Cathy Belter who IMHO was useless and unresponsive to her constituents after the first few years she was in office. I understand she had a long-term illness, but she should have stepped down so her constituents could actually get served. I'm glad Liz won; from what I've read about her and from the few times I've met her, she seems to sincerely be interested in students' needs.

Mike McClanahan seems like a really nice guy and he speaks very well. That said, when he spoke, it was more about things he would like to do but he never backed that up with how he planned to secure funding for things. (i.e. his interest in bringing metro to Fair Oaks. That's already planned; I know I read somewhere they already have the land set aside in the Fairfax Center area; it's just not funded)

Though Pat could definitely be a better public speaker, he actually seemed to know the ins and outs of the issues and had solid plans for funding on some initiatives. Honestly, I'm looking forward to watching him give Gerry Connolly a hard time at Board meetings since they despise each other. Gives those long boring meetings a little something interesting.

There was a bluegrass festival that the DEMS strategically threw in WV that ended at 6:30pm, knowing damn well that rednecks cannot make it back to Fairfax in time to vote by the 7pm deadline.

Only a few more days until Liz Bradsher is in place on the FCPS Board.

Pat Herrity will also be taking office and in my opinion, it worked out fine. The District Supv. really does not have the "power" if you will, to build a school. That money does not come from their office, no matter how much they support the idea. It should be noted however, that Pat Herrity and Gerry Hyland each endorsed the South County Middle School - even if it is only as a gesture.

This thread is NOT about a middle school, that was the other one - the one where LB had supposed declining numbers (without proof), etc.

But, since you asked, the problem is that the SCMS should have been built in 2005 along side the HS.

Actually, they were both long overdue, time to finish what was started!

You brought up the middle school which is the only reason Liz Bradsher ran for school board. She represents Silverbrook only and will throw the rest of her district under the bus when the Middle school does not come about. Newington Forest will be going to Lake Braddock.

As for a middle school, once SCSS gets the boundaries corrected a middle school may never be needed, and with the budget cuts coming next year do you really think building a new school when the ones the county has are not utilized will fly.

RIF - please go back and show me where I brought up the SCMS... I did not. Rather, I simply answered a question asked by another, just as I have answered yours.

You again are presenting opinons as "facts" in this thread as you did the other one. Please stop.

You tell me not to bring up the middle school yet you have no problem discussing it with another that brought it up. By entertaining the other posters comment about the middle school leads the discussion to the middle school. Besides the real connection to the middle school is Liz Bradsher who in my opinion was elected only to get a school built when it is not needed.

Again, RIF.

I not only answered the question, but clarified the role(s) of the County Supervisor. Mentioning the SCMS was merely an illustration point that was relevant due to that person bringing it up.

If you want to debate the merits of funding/building the SCMS or not, you have a thread to do so. If you want to congratulate Liz Bradsher, then you are in the right spot.

Please rise above the mentality that some posts on this site go. Thanks.

OK then I congratulate Liz for being elected to the School Board and I look forward to her serving the entire Springfield district and not just the Silverthorners that elected her to build a school that is not needed and not affordable.

How's that. Meet your approval?

She may have easily won the election due to the promise of getting a new middle school built and keeping LBSS under utilized. The people who live outside the Silverbrook ES area will be wishing they hadnt voted for her when a new school is not funded and the County sends Newington Forest to LBSS

Liz Bradsher had much better funding from her rich cronies in Crosspointe and Barrington tha did her opponent. We will see how much she cares for ALL of Springfield District, not just the Silverbrook area. She needs to be responsible in this recessionary time by addressing the SC overcrowding by first using the surplus capacity at Lake Braddock. Whether it's Newington Forest or North Silverbrook: someone needs to leave Stallionland.

ffxn,

You want statistics to prove facts yet you refuse to accept that the projections for Lake Braddock make a new middle school unneccesary and Liz Bradsher's promise of a school political pandering. Check the latest projections and go ahead and deny deny deny. When the taxpayers see the reality of the situation any new school proposal will be DOA!

The last set of facts I saw, provided through the numbers that FCPS has (actual, not projected) showed the school (LBSS) had not gone down as their forecast stated two years ago. In fact, enrollment this year showed to go up about the same number of seats they had hoped to fill with "bad data."

When the numbers were questioned, it came back as data provided by the FCPS district. WIth School Board Members present, if the information was not valid, I am sure they would have corrected it. They did not.

There IS a school that is sorely under-filled. Mount Vernon. Shifting students to the east though, is not good for politics, and it does not matter who the elected person is. Nobody is talking about that fact.

Liz Bradsher and others she worked with in the 1990's, are the reason there IS an SCSS today. NOT because the county fulfilled their deal, not because large chunks of funding became available from TAXES. Actually, another Fairfax Underground hero, Dave Albo, helped that process along through the private/public partnership. But we'll try to keep this from becoming about Albo along with school lines as well.

I havent seen a school board member yet that was interested in giving the taxpayers a break. All they care about is having power over others and meddling in peoples personal lives. They dont care about the kids getting a decent education, only keeping the teachers and bloated admin people happy.

This yearly school bond issues are the biggest fraud of all. The idiots that keep voting for them are the same ones who run up their personal credit cards then whine because they cannot pay. They think the money is free.

The new CIP is on the FCPS website. Over 200 empty seats are ready and waiting for the surplus South County kids just this year alone. The projected enrollments shrink each year creating even more surplus spaces for the Newington Forest kids.

You're sure they would have corrected it? How do you know they didn't? Look I know your going to deflect and deny the fact that we have the capacity to fix problems with over crowding at SCSS.

So Later it is I suppose you have no argument. Again I ask who would you send to Mount Vernon from South County? Oh that right that handful of kids from Mason Neck that has SCSS busting at the seams. Please.

Silverbrook neighborhoods of Barrington and Crosspointe are closer to Lake Braddock. Don't be so sure you won't be a Bruin.

Dude,

Are you from Hayfield? Why do you care so much about the Barrington & Crosspointe area. You are so angry at this group. Newington Forest is just as close to Lake Braddock as Barrington & Crosspointe. In fact, the homes across the street from Newington Forest area go to Lake Braddock now. So you need to chill and just cool down. It really doesn’t matter which school will go to Lake Braddock.

Your right I really don't care, although neighborhoods next to Barrington and further South go to LBSS as well so why would Newington Forest automatically be sent away. It is well known that when boundaries for SCSS were being discussed many of the advocates for a middle school now were advocating in keeping the most disadvantaged areas of SCSS out of the new school. If you could have heard some of the things said by members of these communities about Hayfield you to would have a problem with them. They are not the only ones in this county and I think Newington forest has just as much right to stay at SCSS as does Silverbrook neighborhoods. The problem is they don't have a school board member living in their neighborhood so they are probably up the creek.

Looks like a nerve was struck and the reality of it all, finally surfaces...

I was at most of the boundary hearings/meetings/workshops and I heard none of the remarks you seem to allude to. In fact, during the bondary meetings, Newington Forrest was included in the push to be included at SCSS by Liz Bradsher and her record shows that. I believe this was all part of the Pyramid Soulutions Group. But what the heck do I know.

Again, congrats to Liz Bradsher

I was at all the meetings and heard many a comment about Hayfield and the areas and people that fed into it. Oh and sure Liz was all for Newington Forest but lets see what happens if it comes down to who needs to go to LBSS. Under the bus they go just like Mason Neck and Lorton. Now she has even more power to mold her school. Congrat to LIZ.

That wouldn't surprise me althought I'm not sure what they would do with the room there. West Potomac is not over crowded and Mount Vernon is to far in traffic to send SCSS kids up Route One.

If they try to shift West Potomac to Mount Vernon it just may be the end of the School Board.

If you look at the current SC boundaries, the North Silverbrook area juts into the current LB boundaries like a sore thumb. Kids directly south of Crosspointe currently are at LB already and always have been.

Funny how in the late 90s, Silverbrook begged to be redistricted to LB but now LB is suddenly not good enough for their precious darlings.

Say what you want about me, it makes no matter. But we are talking about public schools here. I want to see a fair discussion and equitable use of the facilities the we the public own. There is an attitude of entitlement coming from the Silverbrooke area that they are the ones who decide who goes and who stays at SCSS. All at South County now were clamoring to get out of Hayfield and in doing so left a bad taste in those that continued on at Hayfield and this was from former Hawks that were friends and schoolmates. I see the same thing coming for Newington Forest and think it is unfortunate that another community that is less vocal and active are about to get thrown under the bus and it will hit them before they know it. If that makes me sound like a girl then so be it, but just because it does not effect me personally does not mean I should not stand up for what is right. If it makes more sense to send Newington forest to LBSS then fine I can support that, but the decision should be base on what is equitable.

Oh
Congrats Liz
Almost forgot the rules of this thread.
