WHERE'S THE BEST CHEESESTEAKS IN NOVA?
Posted by: MAD MAX ()
Date: April 03, 2011 01:23PM

so who's got the best cheesesteak? Philadelphia Cheesesteak Factory in Alexandria was a bit weak i thought - fast service, very nice people and good enough i guess, it's just that i expected more with Philadelphia in their name - i really wanted to be stoked that i found a great new place - and btw, mario's is a given - where else?

Mario's makes terrible cheesesteaks, even by DC standards.

sorry to all - didn't do my homework and search it before posting - that darn cheeseburger thread got me all worked up (and hungry) - but any new thoughts? i think Mario's is pretty good as long as you don't eat it there!

Malek's was always good, but I haven't had a cheesesteak from there since they changed the name from Plaza Pizza.

First of all - it is called a CHEESESTEAK, not a steak and cheese. It comes with chopped grilled onions, meat and cheese served on an Amoroso roll.

When you add lettuce and tomato, that is called a CHEESESTEAK HOAGIE. It is not served that way unless you request a cheesesteak hoagie.

FWIW, there's a place in Bethesda that uses Amoroso's and whiz. Haven't tried one yet but it may be worth checking out if you're in that area. The pics on their website look pretty good.

They even do a "Pittsburgh" cheesesteak that has French fries inside the sandwich, ala Primanti's.

Best to take out though. The fact that it has "Philidelphia" in its name tends to attract the Philly trash that has migrated to NOVA. I guess if you don't mind eating your sandwich surrounded by a bung of mouth breathing, smelly, fat, obnnoxious assholes, then my all means grab a booth.

It is pretty accepted, common knowledge that Manassas is culturally southern Virginia. At least to those not living in Manassas.

Well, by that metric, Annandale is culturally somewhere north of Pohang and South of Seoul. But that doesn't mean it isn't NoVa.

Those areas don't remind me of southern Virginia at all, I'm not getting where that metric applies.

Junior's Pizza in Reston makes awesome cheesesteaks. Meat, cheese, and onions, none of the lettuce & tomato crap. Good sub rolls too. The owner is from Wilmington so he knows a thing or two about good philly cheesesteaks.

While I appreciate the acknowledgement that I am an expert on this topic, Culmore is in Fairfax County and is therefore on-topic for the thread.

You described where it is geographically, not culturally. You had previously described Manassas culturally, not geographically. Having trouble?

No trouble at all, it is called a logic tree. If area is in Fairfax County, it is on-topic. If area is broadened to "Northern Virginia" and area is not in Fairfax County, then there is the cultural question.

Yes, then be consistent. Arlington and Falls Church were both mentioned. It seems you fell out of the illogical tree and hit every branch on the way down.

You can find killer cheesesteaks, hoagies, and pizza in all the towns up there. In fact, the best cheesesteaks IMO come from a small chain up in the Allentown/Bethlehem area. And yes, I mean better than Geno's or Pat's.

We ain't talkin bout hoagies n pizza. This is a cheesesteak thread. Look pal, I'm from Philly and no friggen burb shop's got shit on a real cheesesteak from anywhere in Bella Vista or South Philly for that matter. Hear me, no one.

Where? Tony Luke's?

I also disagree with the comment that Geno's is shit. The quality is as good now as it was back in the 80s and 90s. Fresh bread, tender, flavorful meat that isn't greasy, a good amount of onions... they're not my favorite but the quality is there.

Eh, yeah, Tony Luke's ain't bad. I really like Cosmi's. Jim's is good too. So is Slacks's.

Hell, you can even go into North Philly or Roxborough and get a good cheesesteak at Chink's or Dalessandro's.

Thing is, you ain't gettin that quality out of the city.

There are plenty of good cheesesteak shops in the neighborhoods surrounding Philly. I've also enjoyed Dalessandro's.. good stuff. In Chester heading North off 95 - Kerlin St - OMG - go to Furillo's. Great steaks, great hoagies. After my kids tasted a real hoagie, they won't touch Subway.

No such thing outside of Phila. Haven't had anything close. I realize they have no idea when I see lettuce, tomatos and mayo. A true cheesesteak is sauteed onions, ketchup and maybe hotsauce, with american cheese or cheese wiz.

Get your kandy kakes and krimpets while you can, understand that Tastykake is in serious financial trouble since moving to their new plant in South Phila, and may be sold or shut down by early summer. Victim of market share and changing tastes.

In the did you know category
Tony's N.Y. Pizza at Fair Lakes(I think he also has one out in Gainsville now?) has a brother who runs a Tony's N.Y. Pizza on Liberia Ave. in Manassas, staff out there seems 100% spanish foods okay

thing is the brother's apparently do not get along at all
I was in Fair lakes store and some dude with a New Yawk accent kept asking and needling about the Manassas store and the gentleman who runs the Fair Lakes store ignored what the New Yawker kept asking
I do prefer the food at Fair Lakes

Actually - I was born and raised IN PHILLY until I went away to college. If you knew what you were talking about, you would understand that there are many small sandwich shops around the city making cheesesteaks that are a damn close to some of the best - otherwise they wouldn't stay in business.

The point of this thread was to find good cheesesteaks around here. There are those of us who are willing to eat something close to what we can get at home.

frigg'n hilarious.....i saw that too.... shit, now i gotta go down there....thats just too much excitement to possibly be missing out on! ...but i am gonna check out al's today ...that many people just can't be wrong...(except for all that lettuce and tomato crap)

tony's in fairlakes has the best new york style pizza IMO....but their "cheesesteaks" are just steak and cheese subs...sorry guys, but very weak

plus, meeper, you gotta understand, i've fallen in love with "cheesesteak" without ever having gotten one from the source - (or at least what i would consider philly style)....all i know is of the steak-um style subs down here so to me mario's is a notch above 95% of the crap in this area

FWIW, the Philadelphia Cheesesteak Factory in G'town used to do a pretty good job with theirs. Unfortunately, it closed. Their location in the Tysons I food court is really inconsistent and in noisy, annoying atmosphere.

There used to be a Philadelphia Mike's in Reston that made a pretty tasty pizza steak (I gotta have sauce on mine). Not super-authentic, but it was good. Their Rosslyn location was really gross and weird (it had Indian food on the menu, srsly WTF).

Those are the only 2 worth mentioning, IMO. Everything else has been pretty mediocre. Now I just wait until I visit PA to hook up with a good cheesesteak. I'm getting tempted to visit Al's though.

If you're ever in the Alexandria/Kingstowne are, a damn good option that no one seems to know about is MAMA MIA'S in the ROSE HILL shopping center on Franconia Road. Down home 50's style diner, and the dude that owns not only is the sole employee 90% of the time, but he's been at this location for 29 years. When it comes to a decent steak & cheese, the man knows damn well what he's doing.

The Broiler on Columbia Pike seems be to listed in a lot of magazines, blogs, etc. I've eaten it many times and what you get for what pay seems to be a bit generous. The food has always tasted great. I don't think newer people to the area would know about this place.

Alright, I have a bone to pick with this Pat & Geno's cheese steak thing in Philly. I rolled up to Pat's real late with literally nobody there. I knew they act like entitled dickheads but I ordered and tried to pay in credit card. He came back at me with how I ordered and assumed I knew they only cash.

To the fat fuck with the awful Philly accent behind the counter - you're selling cheese steaks. I don't give a fuck about your tradition or how many celebrities have come to your stand. You're a grown adult hocking overrated sandwiches. Suck my dick, I hope your place burns down.

I did not see anything in Search of Als Steak house since this thread in 2014.

About 2 years ago I got a greasy cheesesteak from him. The best place to eat one was standing under a water hose to rinse off the grease it got on you. Def not to be eaten sitting in a brand new Vette

But they were good. Plenty of meat on em. Years back he had the same wide type of bread roll that Anthony's had and that breads gone too..it was better then the rolls today.

Best cheesesteaks are Taylor Gourmet (Merrifield) and Capriotti's (several locations). Philadelphia Tavern in Manassas is decent, too.

Good rules to live by:
- never order from a place that calls it a steak and cheese
- if they ask if you want lettuce, tomato or mayo.... walk away.
- order with white American cheese (and fried onions)
- bread is key... make sure the place uses tasty rolls
- don't settle. This is such an easy sandwich to get right. Don't give your business to people who don't care enough to deliver the goods on this simple delicacy

LOL.. I'm with you Bro..A REAL "Cheesesteak".. "Philly" style.has .No Salad on the Cheesesteak, Onions Meat Cheese..Roll, But Alas.. If you order just that.. You wont get much on the roll in some joints. The Typical "Steak and Cheese" Sub around NOVA Is chopped Steak Um,with onions in it, Lettuce,Tomato and Mayo.

So here's another greasy and good one wit the salad From Little Italy in Backlick Shopping Center.. I think that's the name Braddock Rd and Backlick wit the Giant Food. It was not bad but yes it was greasy..

This is Kilton Of FXU Sports Fame..A Sports Fan place.. Lots of Sports Jerseys on the walls of Famous players..Kind of a Sports Bar. I know Its Kiltons hang out cause it had a Hot Dog Special ! Kilton Hates guns ..but he goes to the gun show to eat hot dogs his favorite #1 Food.

DAJAX..Life's Not Easy When Your Fat and Greasy..

And You spend your time looking for another Greasy Cheesesteak..LOL
