My son had a very difficult time finding work last summer but did
manage to make a few bucks working for Lets Dish. He graduates
in May so now he gets to look for a real job. Good luck.

almost every hiring manager at every establishment has at least one employee that he would love to shit can.

where do you want to work? show up in person around 3-4pm with a resume (it doesn't have to be strong for entry level positions), eye-contact and a good handshake. if you do it right, your callback rate will be 10%.

you would be surprised how many young people are completely unable to even form a sentence in a business setting. the trick is to be proactive as opposed to responding to ads or job listings.

p.s. you will never be rich with this mindset. even a young person can condition themselves with a entrepreneurial mentality. if you want to hustle, start a new thread.

Try hanging out in front of a 7-11. I hear that's a sure way to get a job.

Attitude, for sure, is probably THE major get-a-job element.

You can't go wrong if you show confidence (not haughtiness), you're ready to talk about yourself and honestly answer questions, you DO use eye contact considerably (but again, not intimidatingly), and just come across as a nice person.

It works.

[my line of work - programmer hourly-worker contractor - requires LOTS of interviews since assignments can last as little as a couple months. Though I remain absolutely lousy at remembering names, I've gotten totally used to that firm handshake (not a dead fish one!), forthright attitude, obvious truthfulness in answers (even to saying "I don't know"), and eye contact]

when it comes to entry level jobs, most managers will agree that its much easier to teach someone how to do something correctly than it is to deal with someone who thinks they know what they are doing (and are usually wrong).

be clear that you are willing to do what it takes to learn how to do the job properly.

if they dont have anything available at the moment, ask for a card and ask if you can check back in a week or two. eventually you will get them on the phone at the exact moment some slacker employee strolls in late for the umpteenth time and you will get your shot.

shoot for a hospitality related job like bar back (and eventually bartender) or server. knowing how to deal with people and figuring out how to make good tips are skills that can serve you well in life. it can be a fun job if you're in the right kind of place.

I can tell you K-mart is ALWAYS hiring- but it's minimum wage ($7.25) and you have to work crazy hours- just put in an application at the in-store kiosk then immediately go talk to a manager. I have gotten 3 retail jobs in the past that way. Also auto parts stores usually need drivers, grocery stores and target, etc for night stock...you have options if your hours are flexible.

Oh- that test they make you take with the crazy questions (I steal. yes/no) you always want to take the top or bottom answer...never the ones in the middle. Read more: http://www. ehow.com/how_4446746_pass-preemployment-personality-test.html

Also- try various temp agencies (Friends and Company, manpower, officeteam, etc). If you can answer a phone and do excel and word basically, you should be able to come up with a $9-12 an hour cushy front desk or filing job so you can come in and be in air conditioning all day and chill and file and steal red staplers. I respect you for wanting to work outside though- some days I wish I could trade my desk for an outside job. :(

Good Luck with whatever you do! :)
