The worst hailstorms are usually out in the valley area between Dulles and Leesburg. Hail is fairly rare here in Reston, but out there they get nailed on a regular basis.
I was out running/rucking when this line of storms just came up. I saw a break between the first and second squall lines and I decided to take it. I got back inside before the rain got too hard, and before you could hear the thunder. The wind picked up, but that was about it. Fortunately we didn't get the same garbage that Pittsburgh did, with roofs blown off from a tornado. Either way, these storms are following the same dynamics of the one that produced hail here on Monday morning. They build up in Ohio, then lose a lot of their energy out in the mountains, but some of them maintain enough instability in the upper atmosphere to drop hail on us. The cold front is already passing over us right now, but a third pocket of storms is firing up in Ohio as we speak.
NY is lucky, they're getting snow out of this.
