Undeveloped land across from Villa Lee on Rt. 29

The land is located between Fairfax City and Merrifield on Route 29.I think this vacate land would be great site for a park but I bet the county govt. and some developer dreams about townhouses. Use to be old house on property that burned down a few years back. Noticed some lawn maintainence equipment use to be stored on property but not the last few years. Saw some guy last summer that looked like Gregg Allman mowing the grass with his big old lawn tractor.
Oh yeah, for years there was a religious oriented billboard on the property. Anyone know the story behind this property?

Hello - per your information - Linda Q. Smyth (Providence Supervisor) may very well acquire the "vacant land" as mentioned for a park facility - this project has a very real possibility of being put on the drawing board for implementation in the not too distant future - some details still need to be worked out on that though before this action can be put into frution....................... John

Hope this comes to fruition cause with all the development coming along that corridor the area screams for some open space/parkland

Actually, the land is NOT VACANT. It is owned by the Thompson family and they still maintain it. If you're familiar with the gravestones at the Pan Am Shopping Center, next to the Starbucks, it's the same family. They've owned the land on that side of Lee Hwy for over 200 years. The basement walls of the burnt down house dates back to the 1700's. Mr. Thompson (Alfred, age 95) has specifically said that he will NOT turn the property over to the County for a park and that his sons will inherit the land. 'Armistead Park' on the adjacent side next to Route 50 is named after his Civil War veteran grandfather, Armistead Thompson.

Fairfax needs to learn and preserve its history, not build another park.

Sounds like Mr Thompson hasn't heard of Kelo v New London. He's going to come home one day to find the sheriff at the door and a "COMING SOON WALGREENS" sign in the yard.

The land was sold to a developer who is going to construct a Chick-fil-a worship temple/center.

Why should that land be turned into a park? This idea sounds more like something being floated by some NIMBY living nearby who'd rather see the land remain vacant than have it be developed.

I am pleased to announce that Arthur Treacher's International has chosen Fairfax County for its world headquarters. We have acquired the old Thompson property and will begin construction once all appropriate permits have been obtained. The site will include a flagship restaurant with a drive-up window. Chic-Fil-a has got no sway, but Arthur Treacher's does.
