WASHINGTON (Map, News) - When Christopher Henry Edwards allegedly struck and killed 2-year-old Brandi McCombs on Sunday, he was driving without a license because of a history of reckless driving, according to court documents.

And minutes before the fatal crash, Edwards was spotted by D.C. police driving a green Chevrolet Monte Carlo, sticking his head through the sun roof to flirt with women, speeding and making sudden U-turns in the intersection to show off to observers, according to charging documents. When police tried to pull the car over on the 2100 block of Georgia Avenue NW, Edwards sped away and moments later struck the car carrying Brandi, authorities said.

A judge on Wednesday ordered Edwards be held without bail. He was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Brandi.

Edwards, 31, lost his license after racking up 13 traffic violations between 2002 and 2005, including tickets for reckless driving, failing to pay attention and speeding. Police said that Edwards, of 137 Irvington St. NW, stole the car from his mother, who attempted to report the theft to the Prince George’s police.

Early the next morning, D.C. police got a call that the driver of a green Monte Carlo was performing dangerous stunts in the middle of the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Girard Street NW. Foot patrols witnessed the driving and called for a police cruiser. When the officer pulled the Monte Carlo over, Edwards fled, police said.

The officer did not pursue the vehicle because police are not allowed to chase cars for traffic violations.

Moments later, at Sherman and Columbia avenues NW, the Monte Carlo ran a red light and struck a Plymouth Neon. The Neon struck a light pole, which overturned, trapping Brandi, who was strapped in a child’s seat, and the three adult occupants. Edwards ran from the scene. Brandi was transported to a hospital, where she died. The three adults were taken to hospitals in critical condition. U.S. Marshals and D.C. police detectives captured Edwards on Monday night, hiding under the staircase of a residence in Temple Hills.
